Chapter 299 — The Fleetmaster's Last Stand
For a moment, nobody on the bridge moved.
The hole where the blast door had once stood still glowed faintly at the edges, cooling from white to orange to a dull, smoking red. Smoke curled upward through the shattered frame beneath the emergency lights, drifting across the command center like incense in a desecrated temple.
And standing in the center of that destruction was Gaius.
He did not step forward immediately.
He did not need to.
His presence alone had already changed the bridge. Every officer understood, somewhere between one heartbeat and the next, that the outcome of this engagement had effectively been decided. The only uncertainty remaining was how long it would take.
The Fleetmaster was the first to recover.
He rose fully from his command throne, energy sword already ignited, the blue-white blade humming through the wail of alarms. Around him, officers scrambled back to their stations, not because fear had faded, but because discipline was the last thing any of them still possessed.
"Zealots!"
His voice cracked across the bridge.
"To me!"
They came without hesitation.
Six Sangheili Zealots in golden-trimmed armor stepped forward, energy swords igniting in a chorus of blue light as they formed a crescent between their commander and the intruder.
These were not ordinary warriors. Zealots were among the Covenant's most elite Sangheili, veterans of boarding actions, planetary glassings, and campaigns that had claimed the lives of countless lesser Elites. Many served as commanders, special operations leaders, or personal bodyguards to high-ranking Covenant officers.
One Zealot stepped forward, sword raised.
"You dare defile this vessel with your presence!"
His mandibles flared wide.
"Name yourself, Demon of the humans, so that we may know what we destroy!"
Gaius said nothing.
Another Zealot snarled.
"You have slaughtered warriors of the Covenant without honor, without challenge, like vermin culled from a hold!"
His grip tightened around his blade.
"Face us as a warrior, or die as the coward you are!"
Still, Gaius remained silent.
A third Zealot spoke, older and harder than the others.
"The gods will not permit this insult to stand! Your kind will burn upon the Great Journey's path, ground beneath it like the ash you—"
"Enough."
The Fleetmaster's command cut through the bridge.
The Zealot fell silent instantly, though his sword did not lower.
The Fleetmaster kept his gaze fixed on Gaius, searching the helm for any reaction. There was none. Not even the slightest movement of his head.
The giant simply stood there, Power Fists hanging at his sides, the Iron Halo mounted silently behind his head. To him and the Zealots, the sight was profoundly blasphemous: a demon of humanity crowned by a halo that made him seem unnervingly divine.
As though every challenge hurled at him was beneath acknowledgment.
That was what finally cracked the bridge's composure.
An enemy who raged back was understandable. An enemy who threatened could be answered. But this… this was something that had already decided the outcome before it had ever crossed the shattered threshold.
Then, at last, Gaius spoke.
His voice emerged through the vox grille of his helm, layered with metallic resonance that no longer sounded entirely human.
"Xenos."
The single word rolled across the bridge.
"Your civilization will be purged."
Silence followed.
It did not sound like a threat.
It sounded like a sentence already passed.
Then the pressure came.
An invisible force swept across the bridge.
Several Unggoy stumbled.
Some collapsed outright.
Another dropped his weapon and clutched at his head before crumpling to the deck.
Sangheili officers stiffened.
Mandibles tightened.
Hearts hammered inside armored chests.
There was no known psionic pulse. No chemical agent. No weapon recognized by Covenant science.
And yet every living creature on the bridge understood one thing.
The being before them possessed a will that dwarfed their own.
The sensation faded.
Not completely.
Just enough for warriors to remember who they were.
The Fleetmaster felt something cold settle behind his sternum, a feeling he had not experienced since his first true battlefield.
He recognized it immediately.
Not fear of dying.
Fear of the certainty in that voice.
"You are one being,"
The Fleetmaster spoke, forcing steadiness into his tone.
"One. And you stand before the heart of a vessel that has burned worlds of your kind to ash in the name of the Covenant."
Gaius did not answer.
The silence was worse than any reply.
The Fleetmaster tightened his grip on his sword.
There was no escape.
Only one path remained.
He raised the blade.
"Then we die as Sangheili,"
he declared, loud enough for every officer, Zealot, and trembling attendant to hear.
"Not as prey."
There was no fear in his voice.
He had already accepted that they would die.
The Fleetmaster charged.
The six Zealots charged with him.
To an ordinary warrior, the attack would have looked simultaneous.
To Gaius, it looked slow.
Observation Haki spread across the bridge like an invisible web.
Every heartbeat.
Every shift of balance.
Every tightening muscle.
Every adjustment of a Sangheili wrist before a blade changed direction.
He saw it all before it happened.
Not prediction.
Perception.
The first Zealot struck low.
The second moved for his flank.
The third adjusted his angle midway through the charge.
Gaius stepped forward.
The deck groaned beneath auramite and transhuman muscle.
The first sword passed behind him.
The second scraped across his shoulder guard, throwing sparks.
The third cut only empty air.
Confusion flashed across the Zealots' faces.
Then Gaius struck.
Black Armament Haki flowed across his Power Fists.
The air cracked.
The first blow landed.
The Zealot was torn apart from the waist upward.
Armor fragments, flesh, and blue blood erupted outward as the Power Fist pulped everything it touched.
The corpse collapsed before the sound of the impact finished echoing.
The second Zealot tried to retreat.
Too late.
Gaius seized him by the throat and lifted him completely off the deck with one arm.
Then threw him.
The Sangheili crossed the bridge like a projectile, smashed through a command console, and cratered a bulkhead.
The impact tore through a cluster of security warriors rushing in from the rear access corridor.
Two were crushed outright.
A third was hurled across the deck hard enough to shatter his armor.
Alarms screamed louder.
The remaining Zealots hesitated.
Only for an instant.
But Gaius noticed.
So did they.
The pressure returned.
Conqueror's Haki flooded the bridge.
Invisible.
Unstoppable.
Nearly every Unggoy on the bridge lost consciousness immediately.
Some Sangheili dropped to one knee.
Even veteran Sangheili found breathing difficult.
Run.
Flee.
Survive.
The instinct screamed through every mind present.
The surviving Zealots roared and charged anyway.
Honor demanded action.
They attacked together.
Energy swords carved blue-white arcs through the air.
Gaius shifted.
One blade missed entirely.
The second struck his chest.
The blow that could cut through a tank scattered harmless sparks across polished auramite.
The Zealot's eyes widened.
Gaius answered with a punch.
The Power Fist hit the warrior's torso.
The disruption field detonated.
Armor shattered.
Bones shattered.
The Sangheili ceased to resemble a living creature.
The remains of the body crashed through two bridge stations before coming to rest.
A roar erupted behind him.
Two Jiralhanae charged with gravity hammers raised.
Both weapons descended with enough force to crush armored vehicles.
Gaius stepped between them.
The hammers struck empty air.
The floor exploded beneath the impact.
Gaius drove an elbow into the first Brute's face.
Helmet and skull imploded together.
The collapsing body slammed into two nearby guards, knocking them from their feet and crushing one beneath its weight.
The second swung again.
Gaius caught the hammer's haft one-handed.
The Brute pulled.
Nothing happened.
Confusion crossed the alien's face.
Then Gaius pulled back.
The Jiralhanae left the deck entirely.
Gaius slammed him headfirst into the floor hard enough to buckle the plating.
The body stopped moving.
Two Zealots had repositioned themselves during the chaos, circling around to Gaius's blind side.
They attacked together, energy swords flashing toward his back.
It should have been a perfect ambush.
Gaius turned slightly.
The first blade cut only empty air.
The second passed inches from his armor.
He stepped into the narrow space between the two strikes.
Then both Power Fists moved.
Two punches.
Two impacts.
One Zealot's chest collapsed inward beneath the first blow.
The second lost his head to the follow-through of the other Power Fist.
Both bodies hit the deck almost simultaneously.
The few remaining Zealots paused again.
This time they understood.
It was not merely strength.
Not merely armor.
Not merely skill.
Every attack had already been anticipated before it was launched.
Then the Fleetmaster reached him.
Unlike the others, he did not hesitate.
His sword came low.
Fast.
Precise.
Observation Haki revealed the strike.
Then another.
The Fleetmaster altered the attack midway through the swing.
A feint.
The energy sword flashed upward toward Gaius' neck.
Faster than the others.
Better than the others.
A strike worthy of the commander of a Covenant warship.
Gaius had already seen it.
He shifted slightly.
The blade missed his neck entirely.
The follow-through struck the center of his chestplate.
The Fleetmaster committed fully.
Years of experience guided the blow.
The strike landed exactly where intended.
And accomplished nothing.
The blade skidded harmlessly across polished auramite.
Sparks scattered.
Silence followed.
For the first time since entering the bridge, Gaius turned his helm fully toward the Fleetmaster.
"You searched for a weakness."
The Fleetmaster said nothing.
His grip tightened.
"This armor has none that you can reach."
Gaius's voice echoed through the bridge like distant thunder.
The giant took a single step forward.
The deck groaned.
"What you struck was the strongest part of it."
The Fleetmaster raised his sword again.
Despite everything.
Despite the dead.
Despite the impossible strength standing before him.
Despite the crushing pressure of Conqueror's Haki pressing against his soul.
He raised the blade anyway.
For a brief moment, Gaius regarded him.
Then the Power Fist hummed once more.
A golden hue spread across the massive gauntlet.
The disruption field intensified.
The air around it distorted.
Then Gaius punched.
The strike was so fast that the Fleetmaster only caught a glimpse before he felt it.
What the bridge heard was a violent boom
The Power Fist struck the Fleetmaster on his right side.
The energy shields failed instantly.
The armor followed.
The entire right side of his torso exploded apart beneath the impact.
Fragments of armor scattered across the bridge.
Blood sprayed across nearby consoles.
The Fleetmaster's body was hurled through the air before crashing onto the deck several meters away.
Silence followed.
The few surviving Sangheili stared at what had just happened.
Their commander.
The strongest warrior aboard the flagship.
Defeated in a single blow.
Then Gaius moved.
The deck beneath his feet cracked as his immense strength drove downward for an instant.
He vanished in a blur of gold.
Before the surviving Sangheili could react, he was already in front of them.
The first punch tore through one warrior's torso.
The second detonated another in a spray of armor fragments and blue blood.
The remaining Sangheili never even raised their weapons.
They had seen what happened to the Fleetmaster.
They understood resistance was futile.
Within seconds, the bridge fell silent once more.
Gaius lowered his fist.
Then slowly looked around.
The bridge was effectively dead.
The Unggoy attendants and some security forces remained alive.
Technically.
Most were unconscious, collapsed beneath the earlier wave of Conqueror's Haki.
Gaius ignored them.
They posed no threat.
His gaze shifted.
A single wounded Sangheili remained conscious.
The warrior knelt beside a shattered console, armor broken, blood flowing from multiple wounds.
Yet somehow he remained conscious.
His breathing was ragged.
His hands trembled.
But hatred still burned in his eyes.
He stared at Gaius.
Then forced himself to speak.
"You..."
Blood spilled from his mandibles.
"You will regret this..."
His gaze fixed on the towering figure in gleaming auramite.
"Golden demon."
Gaius remained silent.
The Sangheili continued.
"The Covenant will endure."
"The Great Journey will endure."
His voice weakened.
But his conviction did not.
"Your vile species..."
"...defiles the sacred relics."
"You cling to existence when the gods themselves have judged you unworthy."
A coughing fit interrupted him.
More blood splattered onto the deck.
Still he looked up.
"The Covenant will destroy humanity."
"Every world."
"Every city."
"Every last one of you."
For several moments, neither warrior spoke.
Then Gaius took a step forward.
The Sangheili did not look away.
Even now.
Even facing death.
He remained both a warrior and a believer.
And he had no idea that everything he believed about the Great Journey was built upon a lie.
