Chapter 303 - Chapter 300 — The Emperor's Escape

Chapter 300 — The Emperor's Escape

Blood dripped steadily from the Sangheili's mandibles.

Even kneeling beside a shattered console, armor broken and body failing, he continued staring at Gaius with burning hatred.

The bridge around them had become a graveyard of twisted metal and cooling corpses. The Fleet Master lay dead several meters away. Zealots and Jiralhanae bodyguards were scattered across the deck in pieces. Smoke drifted through the emergency lighting while alarms wailed endlessly through the flagship.

Still, the wounded Sangheili refused to lower his gaze.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Gaius stepped forward.

The Sangheili tightened his grip on his damaged weapon. His shields were gone. His armor was cracked open. Blood pooled beneath one knee.

But his pride remained.

"The Covenant will—"

The words never finished.

Gaius raised one hand.

A single strike.

Quick.

Efficient.

Final.

The Sangheili collapsed.

Silence returned to the bridge.

Gaius looked around once more.

The command center had suffered heavily from the fighting. Several stations had been destroyed outright. Others sparked intermittently as damaged systems struggled to remain active.

Yet the primary command console still functioned.

Damaged, but operational.

The station itself was massive, large enough for several Covenant officers to operate simultaneously. Holographic displays flickered above it, showing status reports, fleet telemetry, navigation data, and internal systems.

Much of it was still active.

Gaius opened the Multiversal Chat.

A moment later, he sent a message.

Gaius: "Tony. The flagship is secured."

The reply appeared almost immediately.

Tony: "Already?"

Gaius: "The bridge is under my control."

A pause.

Tony: "Good."

Tony: "Do you see the main command console?"

Gaius glanced toward the station.

Gaius: "Yes."

Tony: "Don't destroy it."

Tony: "Give me access first."

A parcel notification appeared.

Gaius accepted it.

A compact metallic device materialized in his hand. It resembled a data drive, though its construction was clearly far more advanced than any ordinary storage device.

Tony: "It's a USB."

Another message followed.

Tony: "A very expensive USB."

Gaius ignored that part.

Tony: "The memory capacity is enormous."

Tony: "More importantly, the connector is made from programmable nanites."

Tony: "Since we're dealing with alien hardware, the nanites will figure out how to interface with whatever socket or data port they can find."

Gaius examined the device briefly, then walked toward the command console.

The bridge remained silent except for warning alarms and damaged machinery.

He pressed the device against the console.

Immediately, the nanites activated.

The metallic casing shifted. Tiny streams of silver flowed outward, searching, probing, adapting.

Within seconds they located access points and slipped into the Covenant machinery.

The console flickered violently.

Static rolled across multiple holographic displays. Warning symbols appeared and vanished. Additional screens activated throughout the bridge.

The nanites had successfully connected.

Data began transferring at astonishing speed.

Navigation records.

Communications logs.

Fleet databases.

Sensor archives.

Military reports.

Everything.

Lines of Covenant text flashed across the displays faster than any Sangheili could have read them. The transfer rate continued climbing higher and higher until even the Covenant processors struggled to keep up.

Gaius remained motionless beside the station.

Several seconds later, a green indicator flashed.

A synthetic voice announced:

"Transfer complete."

The nanites withdrew from the console and flowed back into the device before solidifying into their original form.

Gaius picked it up.

The entire operation had taken only minutes.

Through Observation Haki, he could sense movement throughout the flagship.

Hundreds of life signatures.

Thousands.

The vessel was enormous. The warriors he had killed represented only a fraction of its total complement.

Many sections of the ship had not even seen combat.

Some crews were still operating normally.

Others were only now receiving reports that an intruder had boarded.

Many still believed the bridge remained secure.

Several security detachments were finally mobilizing.

One cluster of Sangheili signatures advanced rapidly through a nearby corridor. Another force approached from below. A larger concentration of Jiralhanae moved from deeper within the vessel, organized and disciplined, preparing to retake the bridge.

Too late.

Far too late.

Gaius had crossed the ship with overwhelming speed. Most of the crew had only learned that the flagship was under attack.

They had not yet learned that their Fleet Master was dead.

Nor that the bridge had already fallen.

Gaius dismissed the approaching forces.

The objective had already been completed.

The Fleet Master was dead.

The bridge was secured.

Everything after that was merely cleanup.

He opened the chat again.

Gaius: "The data has been secured."

Tony: "Perfect."

Tony: "Get out of there if you can."

A brief pause.

Tony: "Or keep breaking their ship."

Gaius ignored the second suggestion.

There was no further need to continue fighting the Covenant forces converging on his position.

Now there was only destruction.

He closed the chat window.

Then Observation Haki spread through the vessel once more.

This time, Gaius was not searching for enemies.

He was searching for the heart of the warship.

The bridge was only the brain.

The true lifeblood of the flagship was its power generation, reactor systems, and primary energy distribution network.

Centuries of fighting aboard voidcraft had taught him exactly where to look.

The answer revealed itself almost immediately.

Three decks below, he sensed a massive concentration of energy.

The flagship's primary power core.

Gaius nodded once.

His Power Fist began humming.

A golden glow spread across the massive gauntlet. The disruption field intensified as Armament Haki flowed into it, dense enough that the surrounding air distorted around the weapon.

He positioned himself directly above where he sensed the reactor.

Then he punched downward.

The deck exploded inward.

Reinforced Covenant alloy gave way beneath the combined force of the Power Fist, Armament Haki, and Gaius' monstrous strength.

To him, it felt little more resistant than hardened foam.

Armor plating shattered.

Support structures snapped.

A circular hole several meters wide appeared instantly.

The shockwave raced through the surrounding structure. The bridge shook violently. Warning lights flickered. Several already-damaged consoles finally exploded.

Far below, crew members stumbled as the vessel trembled around them.

Without hesitation, Gaius dropped through the opening.

One deck.

Then another.

Then a third.

Each floor lasted only a moment before another punch tore through it. Another explosion of twisted metal. Another violent tremor spreading through the ship.

To Covenant personnel below, it was as though an orbital strike was tunneling directly through the flagship.

The final layer of alloy shattered beneath his Power Fist.

Gaius dropped through the opening.

Thud.

For the first time since boarding the vessel, he paused.

Before him stood the heart of the flagship.

The pinch fusion reactor.

The chamber was enormous, a vast industrial space built around a single purpose: power.

At its center stood a colossal reactor assembly stretching through multiple decks. White-violet energy blazed within the containment structure. Purple Covenant alloy supports surrounded the core alongside containment assemblies, energy regulators, and magnetic stabilization systems.

The chamber hummed constantly, a deep vibration that could be felt through the deck itself.

Energy conduits extended outward in every direction.

Weapons.

Shields.

Propulsion.

Life support.

Everything depended upon this place.

Destroy it, and the flagship died.

Gaius opened his Parcel System.

One Melta Bomb appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

Soon a linked demolition package rested in his hands.

Each charge alone could destroy heavily fortified targets.

Together, the result would be devastating.

He walked to the primary reactor infrastructure and secured the linked charges against critical containment machinery.

The timer was activated.

Five minutes.

The countdown began.

Without another glance, Gaius turned away.

The Iron Jetpack roared to life.

Blue-white exhaust erupted behind him as he launched upward through the tunnel he had created.

The flagship trembled as he ascended.

Alarms echoed throughout the vessel. Red warning lights flashed continuously. Emergency systems activated. Damage reports flooded Covenant communications.

Yet most personnel still had no idea what had actually happened.

Many only knew an intruder was aboard.

Others only knew entire sections of the ship had suddenly gone silent.

Few realized their Fleet Master was already dead.

Fewer still realized the reactor now possessed a five-minute death sentence.

Moments later, Gaius emerged into a major corridor.

Organized resistance awaited him.

Sangheili warriors.

Jiralhanae shock troops.

Kig-Yar marksmen.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

The surviving security forces had finally concentrated their strength.

Plasma rifles, carbines, needlers, fuel rod cannons, and ignited energy swords turned toward him.

For a brief moment, both sides stared.

The Covenant saw a giant emerging from a hole that should not have existed. Golden armor. Power Fists. Iron Halo. Blue jetpack flames.

Gaius saw only another obstacle between himself and the hull.

The Iron Jetpack intensified.

The blue flames brightened.

The Iron Halo glowed.

A shimmering shield formed around him.

Then he accelerated.

The corridor exploded into motion.

He became a living battering ram.

The first Sangheili vanished beneath the impact before he could raise his weapon. His body crashed into those behind him, shattering armor and bone alike.

Gaius never slowed.

Jiralhanae were hurled aside like broken dolls.

Kig-Yar disappeared beneath the collision.

Unggoy ceased being obstacles.

The corridor became a trail of destruction. Bodies smashed into walls. Blood painted bulkheads. Weapons spun through the air.

The Iron Halo shield absorbed every attack.

Plasma fire.

Needler shards.

Fuel rod explosions.

Not a single alien reached his armor.

The Covenant's final attempt to block his path became debris left behind him.

Minutes later, Gaius reached the section of hull where he had originally entered the flagship.

The ruined launch pod still remained there, twisted and barely recognizable.

It had done its job.

Nothing more.

Gaius looked through the breached section toward space.

Then paused.

The flagship's external shield had fully recovered.

Blue energy shimmered across the hull once more.

The breach created by the launch pod had been sealed by the regenerated barrier.

Gaius calculated the remaining time with exact precision.

Two minutes and forty-five seconds remained.

The Melta Bomb would detonate then.

The reactor would not survive.

Neither would the flagship.

Remaining aboard was no longer an option.

He looked toward Cascade hanging in the distance.

Then spoke quietly.

"It appears I will not be returning via the launch pod."

His right hand began glowing.

Golden light gathered around the Power Fist.

Not from machinery.

Ancient.

Radiant.

As though answering a call.

Streams of golden energy wrapped around the gauntlet. Layer upon layer, a new weapon formed around it.

Massive talons emerged and locked into place.

Runic lines ignited across their surfaces.

Black-and-red lightning crawled between the claws as Conqueror's Haki flowed through the manifestation.

The Emperor's Claw.

A colossal golden claw encased the Power Fist.

It looked less like technology and more like divine judgment given physical form.

Golden light spilled across the surrounding hull.

Even the Covenant shield ahead shimmered beneath its presence.

The Iron Jetpack roared.

Gaius launched forward.

He became a golden projectile racing toward the barrier.

For several seconds, he accelerated continuously, his mind calculating the distance and timing with perfect precision.

Then he swung.

The Emperor's Claw crossed the remaining space.

Golden light erupted.

The strike slammed into the flagship's shield.

Against the immense warship, Gaius looked insignificant.

The damage he inflicted said otherwise.

A colossal claw mark tore across the barrier's surface.

The shield distorted violently as cracks of unstable blue energy spread outward like shattered glass.

Blue light erupted across the vessel.

The shield network rippled.

A massive opening tore through the barrier.

Temporary.

But sufficient.

Gaius accelerated through the breach.

Open space surrounded him.

Behind him, the colossal Covenant flagship continued drifting through orbit, unaware that its remaining lifespan could now be measured in seconds.

The Iron Halo operated at maximum output.

The Iron Jetpack burned continuously.

From a distance, Gaius looked less like a warrior and more like a falling star, a golden streak racing toward Cascade.

Far behind him, inside the dying flagship, the countdown continued.

2 minutes 12 seconds.
