Chapter 140 - Chapter 140: The Living and the Dead, the Food Treasure of Flesh and Bones

"Direct injection. Forcing concentrated Gourmet Cells into the human body. Failure to adapt… results in monstrosity. A life of slavery." The Upside-Down Immortal's gesture encompassed the entire, bizarre assembly of fairies. "This… is the legacy of our ancestors. This is why the people of the Demon Food World look… like this."

A terrible connection snapped into place in Komatsu's mind. His face went ashen. "Then… the Gourmet Hunters in the Human World… their cells…?"

"Yes," the old fairy confirmed, his voice leaden. "The Gourmet Cells flowing in their veins… are most likely the product of another, later Nitro experiment."

The revelation landed like a physical blow. The feast's joy was utterly extinguished, replaced by a cold, creeping horror. Toriko's hands clenched into fists so tight they trembled. "So… the Gourmet Demons inside us… they are…?"

"Not necessarily."

King's voice cut through the dread, calm and authoritative. As the sole bearer of 'meta' knowledge, he offered a crucial distinction. "The Gourmet Demons housed within you Four Kings… they are the materialization of your own appetites. Your wills given form. The Gourmet Cells are merely the fuel, the medium. They are not implanted slave-drivers."

The clarification provided a sliver of relief, but the atmosphere remained suffocatingly heavy.

Sunny, ever the one to deflect discomfort with flair, attempted to shift the mood. "Still… it is astonishing your ancestors not only escaped the Nitro but thrived here."

A genuine, weary pride touched the elder's face. "For that, we owe our existence to the Eight Kings. We have lived in their shadow, under their indirect protection, for eons. Their presence… it creates a zone even the Blue Nitro hesitate to violate."

"The Eight Kings…" Toriko murmured, his eyes drifting to where Horse King Heracles lay, now daintily nibbling a specially conjured 'air biscuit' from King's hand. It looked ludicrously docile. Yet, the memory of the King's Breath—a column of air that could erase geography—was branded into Toriko's soul.

Sensing the gloom threatening to consume the celebration, the Upside-Down Immortal cleared his throat. He leaned forward, a conspiratorial twinkle returning to his old eyes.

"Since we speak of God Acacia's menu… let this old one tell you of the Food Treasure sleeping on the Seventh Continent!"

Komatsu's chef instincts overrode his shock. He whipped out his notebook. "A Food Treasure?"

"PAIR!" the elder announced, his voice regaining its vigor. "The 'Inside-Out Drop'! Legend says it can regenerate flesh on bones, whisper life back into the dead!"

His eyes grew dreamy. "And its most miraculous property… its sound-transmitting flavor! When the bell of PAIR rings, it releases a mammoth-scale delicious aroma that blankets the entire Seventh Continent. The very sound of it can restore one's body to peak condition, as if you'd just consumed a perfect meal!"

GULP.

A synchronized swallow echoed around the table. The despair was momentarily forgotten, overpowered by the primal call of a new, unimaginable deliciousness. Saitama was practically vibrating on his seat, stars in his eyes. "No way! That's awesome! I wanna go! Now!"

Garou said nothing, but the intense focus in his eyes and the subtle movement of his throat spoke volumes.

Only King wore a faint, knowing smile. Ah, yes, he thought. 'Pair.' The legendary 'testicle juice' of the Monkey King. Some truths were better left unspoken.

"The Seventh Continent…" Toriko mused, connecting the dots. "That's the domain of another Eight King… Monkey King Bambina."

"Precisely," the elder nodded. "And PAIR slumbers at the peak of the colossal mountain he calls home. To claim it… you must first pass the Monkey King's trial."

"Trial?" Sunny arched a perfect eyebrow. "What manner of trial?"

The Upside-Down Immortal lowered his voice to a theatrical whisper. "Monkey King Bambina is… the eccentric of the Eight Kings. A playful, unpredictable problem child. He loves challenges. To earn the right to pick PAIR, you must defeat him… in the field he considers his greatest mastery."

Zebra cracked his knuckles, a fierce grin spreading. "His 'mastery'? So it's a fight! That's my language!"

"Not so simple," the elder cautioned, shaking his head. "The Monkey King's raw power is said to surpass even the Horse King's. Brute force alone will not suffice. You must beat him at his own game." He left the nature of that 'game' hanging, a tantalizing, terrifying mystery. The path to the next ingredient was clear, but the gatekeeper was a sovereign whose whims were as vast as his strength.

The moment the words "more powerful than the Horse King" left the elder's lips, a low, displeased HMPH rumbled from the direction of King's feet. The air temperature seemed to drop several degrees.

The Upside-Down Immortal went rigid, a cold sweat instantly beading on his brow. He, too, had been quietly aware of the 'foal's' true identity since its arrival. The last thing he needed was to offend a planetary entity at his own banquet.

"Ahem! This old man misspoke!" he stammered, correcting himself with frantic speed. "The Horse King is, of course, the paramount sovereign! The Monkey King is a mere… spirited youngster! But! The key to obtaining PAIR isn't violence! There is another way!"

"The Ape Dance," King interjected smoothly, a glint of amusement in his eye. He enjoyed watching the old fairy squirm. "PAIR only ripens and detaches when the Monkey King's Ape Dance reaches its ecstatic climax, and he sheds tears of joy." He paused, letting the suspense build, his gaze lingering on Saitama and Garou. "And… PAIR has a rather… entertaining temporary side effect. I believe it will be… memorable."

"What side effect?" Garou's eyes narrowed, instantly suspicious of any 'entertainment' at his expense.

King merely smiled, raising his glass in a silent toast before taking a leisurely sip. His silence was more tantalizing than any explanation.

The mystery reinvigorated the banquet. Conversations bubbled up about the Seventh Continent's wonders, the nature of the Ape Dance, and the tantalizing, unknown 'side effect' of the legendary ingredient.

"It's settled!" Toriko's fist slammed on the table, rattling the dishes. He raised his glass high. "Our next destination—the Food Treasure PAIR of the Seventh Continent! For the revival of the Human World, and for—"

"—THE FEAST!" came the roaring, unified response. Glasses clashed, sealing the pact with a crystal-clear ring.

The revelry lasted deep into the night, fueled by camaraderie and culinary dreams, finally winding down as the embers of the great bonfire faded to ash.

As for King… his formidable presence and striking demeanor had not gone unnoticed. The beautiful physician, Atashino, had 'invited' him to her temporary clinic for a… thorough 'post-adventure wellness evaluation.' The specifics of that 'regimen' remained, discreetly, between the physician and her intriguing patient.

Several days later, on the windswept coast marking the departure from the Demon Food World to the Seventh Continent.

The dawn sun painted the sea in molten gold. Toriko stood facing a crowd of fairy well-wishers.

"Thank you for your incredible hospitality!" Toriko bowed deeply to the Upside-Down Immortal.

The old fairy leaned on his cane, his eyes misty. "The thanks are ours. The AIR you brought… it has breathed new life into our ancient world. I had hoped to keep you longer…"

"Can't do that!" Toriko laughed, slapping his own solid stomach. "The appetite for PAIR is already roaring inside me!"

The new, expanded team—King, Saitama, Garou, and the Four Heavenly Kings with Komatsu—stood ready at the water's edge. The promise of a new legend, a new flavor, and a dance with a monkey king beckoned from across the waves. The hunt for God's menu continued.
