The reason Cate had suddenly become so enraged was that she could smell the blood flowing through this old man's body. It was vampire blood, and yet the old man was not a vampire. Cate moved closer to the old man. She got to her knees and moved towards the old man in a very fluid yet abnormal manner that had the old man pissing his pants.
His heart was beating out of his chest, and his eyes were red with pain and fear. The old man understood the power of the suits used by the soldiers, and yet Cate had just killed them all in what seemed to have been an instant. The old man had watched everything from his secret hiding place in the walls. As one of the leading engineers involved in the Chimera Project, the old man understood the damage the suits could do. For Cate to have ripped through them like paper made him understand that he was in the presence of one of the most powerful supernaturals he had ever encountered.
Cate sniffed the old man, moving her face over his neck, chest, and then the rest of his body. She then got up to her feet. She now understood what this old man had done. "I have come across a few humans like you over the years. You hate supernatural with a passion, but you justify using their blood and other fluids to gain power and youth." The old man was shaken to see that he had been seen through completely.
Hmmmph. "Did you think you were the first human to use vampire blood to stave off death? Many people in history have used the same trick to live for hundreds and thousands of years. From the same kind of decay about you, you must be about three hundred years old. This achievement is impressive on its own. After all, very few humans have the willpower needed to go through life without being immortal but with an undying, decaying body. The very thought makes some people choose death."
Cate nodded her head upwards, and the old man was lifted into the air. He floated before Cate with his heart in his mouth. "You are a witch," the old man said with his voice shaking. "I am a sorcerer... I would like to think that I am the most talented sorcerer to have ever walked the earth, but that is just me. Now, tell me everything you humans have been up to in this place."
The old man gulped loudly. This was his first time hearing that witches were different from sorcerers. In their research, they had classified all supernaturals who could wield magic as being witches. He now knew that there were most likely many different kinds of these beings. Cate could see the old man thinking about the little information she had given him. Even that little thing had him so excited that he almost forgot about his current situation.
"You have two minutes to tell me everything. If not, I will roast you alive before sacrificing your soul to Hades." This got the old man back to the real world. "I work for the Chimera Project. The project was founded in the year 1340 in England. The organization was founded after a small group of nobles found out about the existence of supernatural beings. The sudden discovery that they were not the most powerful beings in the world shocked these powerful nobles, and so, with the project, they aimed to harness the power of the supernatural beings.
The project expanded to encompass Britain and then the rest of the world. Currently, the Chimera Project has branches in all corners of the world, investigating, studying, and incorporating the abilities of your supernatural beings into our science. It can be said that the Chimera Project is the most powerful faction in the world. Currently, you are in one of our branches. This branch is just a small one that was established to allow us to study an artifact that was discovered buried in this place.
Since the artifact could not be moved, we had no choice but to set up this branch in this place with the help of the governments of the United States and the Philippines. I am Doctor Foster. As you have already guessed, I am just a minor character in the project. Killing me will get you nothing. I hope you can let me off this one time." The old man spewed out one shocking fact after another. Cate was using a truth spell on the man, so everything he said had to be the truth.
Cate had long ago accepted that humans were one of the craziest races in the world, but it now seemed that her conclusion had been lacking. This was not craziness but insanity. The humans had been playing with fire for hundreds of years. They had somehow managed to keep all this a secret from the supernaturals till now, but all that was about to change. Once the supernaturals learned about how the humans were experimenting on them, stealing their power, and messing with the order of power in the universe, the supernaturals were sure to explode with rage.
They would stop giving any consideration to the fact that the gods were the backers of humanity. The supernaturals feared the gods, but they were also proud creatures, most of whom liked the fact that they were above humans in the pecking order. This revelation was sure to start a war unlike any other. "What artifact was discovered in this place?" Cate asked the old man.
She believed that this artifact was the cause of the earthquake that had devastated the city a few years back. It was the reason why the Mage Born's power had gone berserk at this awakening, causing so much death. This artifact had to be truly powerful to affect the Mage Born, who was tens of kilometers away.
