Chapter 64 - Marrow and Memory

Doctor Foster clearly knew the artifact that had grabbed Cate's attention, but he was also a member of the Chimera Project. This organization was not something that hired just anyone. Most of the people who were involved were descendants of the founders of this faction. They were raised with loyalty and pride in their heart. The Chimera Project was not something they would simply betray after being threatened once. Even though Doctor Foster had given away a lot of information, it was nothing that could be used to bring down the organization. He had done so or appeared to do just that in order to buy some time until reinforcements arrived.

Doctor Foster looked into Cate's eyes, and the look in his eyes changed. He was no longer entertaining fear. He grabbed onto his loyalty and had no intention of letting go. The artifact being kept in this place was something that the Chimera Project needed for the future. With this artifact, the organization would need hundreds fewer years to achieve power equal to the supernaturals. As a human, Doctor Foster was not willing to give up this chance that could possibly allow the human race to dominate not just this mortal plane but even beyond. The doctor even had fantasies of pushing the human race beyond the gods and devils. This was the dream of those in the Chimera project.

"I see. You think that keeping quiet will allow you to somehow stop me from getting the artifact. I can assure you that since I am here, the artifact is as good as mine. There is nothing any human anywhere can do to stop me. If you knew who I was, you would agree with me." Cate flicked her finger and moved the old man next to her. Cate said nothing. She simply opened her mouth, and that was enough for the old man to understand that there were things scarier than he had imagined in this world. Cate's mouth opened so wide that she could fit the doctor's whole head without any issues.

Her mouth was filled with sharp, nail-like teeth, with each having the sharpness of a razor. There were seemingly hundreds of them crammed in there. Her tongue was pitch black and long enough that she could use it to strangle the old man. The tongue was covered in millions of tiny razor-sharp folds that could barely be seen by the human eye, but in this moment of his life, it seemed that death felt great pity for the old man and allowed him to see the instruments of his demise. Cate licked the old man's face once, and his skin and a layer of his flesh were taken away. She then took the old man's head into her mouth and snapped it cleanly off his head. Cate did not swallow. She swallowed it whole before she sat down and closed her eyes. After using the Original Sin spell on herself, she had undergone many changes, and this was one of them. It appeared that she was evolving into some kind of man-eating oyster. She liked the taste of flesh, and he liked the smell of blood.

Over the past few years, Cate had not eaten anyone ever since she chomped on Albrecht's limbs that one time. She managed to hold back the unending hunger because Albrecht's flesh had been so rich in life force. Cate surmised that eating vampires was one of the most effective ways to curb the hunger, but going around eating vampires was something only a fool would do. These were apex predators that had vampire gods backing them up. If too many vampires were to suddenly die, there would be hell to pay, and even Cate was not willing to pay this price. She did not need to make any more enemies with the gods, still a shadow that hung over her future. This was the first time Cate was eating anything, and she felt a kind of euphoria that could not be explained using words.

Cate had gained many abilities with her ongoing transformation. Recently, she had come to believe that she could eat not just the flesh but the memories of her prey. She believes that she could consume the memories, feelings, experience, and perhaps the soul itself. She was not sure about this feeling. Right now, she wanted to test it out with the doctor. If she were able to gain the memories of the good doctor, Cate would learn everything about this base and the Chimera Project. Cate concentrated on what she wanted to happen. She moved her magic through her body in hopes of triggering the one ability he needed right now. He did this for five minutes, but nothing worked. She did not get a single thing from the head she had just eaten.

Cate opened her eyes and looked at the corpse bleeding out a few feet away. "I really wanted to eat as little of this old man as possible," she lamented before opening her mouth. She ate without caring about how she would appear to anyone who saw her right now. After just five bites, the corpse was completely devoured. She let her tongue out of her mouth and licked the floor clean of all the blood. The place became completely spotless. Bang! Cate felt an explosion go off in her mind, and the next moment, she found herself in a place she did not recognize.

She was crying while screaming her lungs out. Cate tried to move around, but she could not. This body was hers and yet not at the same time. It took her a minute to realize that she was trapped inside the body of a baby. A middle-aged man with a relatively good appearance appeared above and carried her from someone else's hands. "I will call you John Foster," the man said. "This is a memory of the old man. It is when he was born. How can he possibly remember something like this?" Bang, there was another explosion. This time, Cate no longer felt that this was her body. She knew that it was simply the old man's memories, and after understanding this, Cate regained her calm. She began watching the memories passively.
