Chapter 534 - Chapter 412

The obvious maintenance routes had become less attractive because the stronghold was preparing for an assault. Rather than prescribe one fixed path, the scouts proposed several approach segments using broken terrain, wall structures, service routes, and ordinary internal movement depending on what the current patrol pattern allowed.

Formation detection concerned Blue Sphere more than visual patrols.

Haotian would avoid spreading the Dao Palace of the Universe broadly merely because the spatial perception could give him more information. He would use ordinary observation wherever possible and rely on Universe only in controlled ranges when local relationships required it.

Lianhua arrived while that discussion continued.

She asked whether another high-level cultivator should accompany him to help secure the receiving area.

Haotian considered it again and rejected the idea.

Two people might clear the final site more easily, but they would make every preceding patrol crossing and formation check harder.

"One person is easier to hide," Lianhua said.

"Yes."

"One person is also alone if something goes wrong."

"Yes."

She disliked the answer without disputing its logic.

Shuyue and Liora raised healer placement once the wider planning group gathered.

The main medical formation could remain inside Creation during the opening phase while embedded healers accompanied the first waves. Serious casualties could be returned through the same passage if Blue Sphere reserved a route for them instead of filling every inch with incoming combat formations.

Yanfei asked where technical groups belonged.

Too early and they would consume protected space before the perimeter existed.

Too late and frontline commanders would encounter unknown formation structures with no one qualified to inspect them.

Xuanyin placed them provisionally in the second stage.

Pyrelith accepted a similar delay.

Celestara would not assume immediate access to the sky.

Umbrel would secure nearby side routes and alarm movement before expanding deeper.

The plan had enough shape by the end of the night for Xuanyin to order a physical rehearsal.

Blue Sphere recreated the preferred assembly ground inside Creation the following morning.

They marked only the dimensions and obstacles supported by reliable information: the approximate boundaries, the three major routes believed to leave it, larger structures that affected movement, and the possible path toward an internal command position. Temporary walls rose only high enough to restrict sight or movement where the real architecture mattered.

Haotian walked the area before the formations arrived.

It looked large on the map.

It looked much smaller when Blue Sphere placed markers for the first wave.

The first attempt confirmed that impression.

Blue Sphere cultivators emerged cleanly through Haotian's practice passage and began establishing the receiving formation, but the western and northern groups widened naturally once they prepared for combat. By the time the next mixed teams emerged, the space around the passage had narrowed enough that several people had to slow before reaching their assigned sectors.

The first commanders tried to solve the crowding by moving the fronts outward.

The center cleared.

The western and northern lines became too thin.

Xuanyin allowed the problem to develop before stopping them.

"You cleared the exit by spending ground you do not control yet," she said while the formations remained where they had ended. "If the courtyard is contested, you cannot solve crowding by assuming the road ahead belongs to you."

The reset took longer than the first attempt.

People had to return through the passage without crossing one another, immediately exposing how difficult casualty movement would become if wounded cultivators later tried to use the same space.

The first wave became smaller.

Marephoros divided its people among the likely threat directions instead of forming one broad layer around the center. Veridian Prime moved earlier so terrain readers could inspect the receiving ground before thousands of people occupied it. Blue Sphere assigned tighter holding boundaries around the opening.

The second attempt remained crowded but structurally stable.

Veridian deliberately marked sections of ground unsafe, forcing Lianhua's western formation to reorganize around a route that had looked available on the original diagram. She adjusted without asking the terrain readers to remove the restriction merely because it was inconvenient.

Simulated resistance began before the second wave entered.

Yinxue and Ziyue held the northern approach without chasing the instructors farther than the ground already secured. Yueru used Stormwind Lightning Step within the eastern formation's support rather than letting speed carry her out of connection. Shuyue remained closer to the specialists and supported cultivators who were actually under strain rather than using the Virtue Dao Palace to replace everyone else's work.

Blue Sphere hesitated too long before releasing the second wave.

Tianlan asked whether the passage itself was blocked.

It was not.

"Then move the scheduled formation."

The second wave entered while the first continued fighting.

Because the routes, safe ground, and local commanders were already known, those cultivators spent much less time around the passage. The receiving area became easier to manage even though more people were entering.

Tianlan held his reserve inside Creation until the western line genuinely began losing depth around the terrain Veridian had marked unsafe. He sent one mixed group through and kept the rest back. The arriving formation stabilized Lianhua's sector without filling the courtyard with people who might become useless if the pressure shifted elsewhere.

Medical movement was corrected during the same long rehearsal.

Shuyue and Liora insisted on reserving one side of the passage for wounded cultivators returning into Creation.

Blue Sphere disliked losing deployment width.

Shuyue asked where they planned to place serious casualties if the first fighting lasted twenty minutes instead of five.

The lane stayed.

Yanfei moved the technical group's position after discovering that equipment occupied far more space than its symbols on the map suggested. Umbrel shortened its initial scouting distance when deep scouts began producing information too slowly to influence the receiving battle. Celestara remained grounded until local conditions allowed useful height.

Xuanyin did not enter the simulated stronghold immediately.

A Blue Sphere deputy managed the receiving area until the second wave secured the route toward the proposed internal command position. Only then did she cross and establish shorter relay relationships with each major approach rather than receiving every local report directly.

The rehearsal continued for hours without resetting every time something became awkward.

Later problems grew out of earlier corrections.

The receiving ground gradually stopped being the center of every fight as formations moved into the surrounding routes, and the passage remained protected without becoming the headquarters of the entire coalition.

By evening, the first-wave structure had been reduced again.

The reserve moved later.

Medical and technical groups had proper timing.

Xuanyin's command location no longer sat beside the opening.

Blue Sphere recorded the actual space formations occupied instead of preserving diagrams that looked cleaner than the movement they represented.

Haotian returned to the practice ground after most people left.

Lianhua joined him near the northern boundary.

"You will have to decide whether the real place works while everyone is looking for you."

"Yes."

"And it may not look like this."

"No."

That was the remaining problem.

The coalition had learned one courtyard.

Haotian might need another.

The next day's practice ground therefore used the alternate logistics courtyard instead of the preferred assembly site.

The new area was narrower and longer, with only two major roads capable of carrying large formations and a smaller service route suitable for scouts. The Creation passage sat off-center because the available records suggested the strongest open ground lay closer to one side.

The first-wave commanders were allowed only a limited period to walk the layout.

They reduced their own numbers before Xuanyin told them to.

The northern road received more strength because it could carry a larger demonic response, while the south-eastern route received a smaller line positioned far enough forward that yielding ground would not immediately collapse into the passage. Umbrel took responsibility for the service route rather than wasting a legion on it.

Tianlan changed the reserve arrangement again.

A smaller element would deploy late in the second wave.

Most of the reserve would remain inside Creation until internal routes gave it enough room to maneuver.

The rehearsal began.

Lianhua's northern formation absorbed the first simulated pressure without trying to push it away immediately. Yinxue and Ziyue held the narrower south-east, where the road limited how much either side could use at once. Yueru remained with the supporting formation until high-level pressure justified her movement.

Tianlan stayed inside Creation while the scheduled second wave handled the first reinforcement demands.

He did not release reserve formations merely because local commanders wanted thicker lines.

The service route produced a smaller simulated raiding group, and Umbrel delayed it long enough for nearby Blue Sphere support to close the path without pulling either main front inward.

The narrower courtyard tested casualty flow and technical movement more severely, but the separate return lane remained usable.

Yanfei's group entered later than expected because a simulated casualty reached the passage at the same time they prepared to cross. Blue Sphere delayed the technical group instead of forcing both movements together.

The decision cost time.

It did not damage the deployment.

Xuanyin remained inside Creation until a route toward the alternate command position had been secured.

Tianlan emerged with only the smaller reserve.

Most of his people stayed behind under standing instructions.

The simulated defenders increased pressure against both active fronts after he entered, and Tianlan used the local reserve only where a relationship between sectors actually threatened to collapse. The larger force inside Creation remained untouched.

The rehearsal continued through midday and into the afternoon.

As the northern formation advanced, Celestara began testing limited upper observation rather than assuming the entire internal sky belonged to it. Umbrel watched nearby side routes instead of disappearing into the deeper stronghold. Yanfei's technical group moved forward only when specific structures required inspection.

A wall-control route eventually became visible from the northern sector.

The local commander wanted to take it immediately.

Xuanyin walked far enough forward to inspect the relationships around the junction herself.

"If you take the gate now, you will have one formation sitting beside the wall while the enemy still owns both roads behind it," she said. "Secure those first."

The gate remained under observation.

Lianhua's formations widened through the neighboring roads before turning toward the wall.

When the represented gate controls were eventually captured, Blue Sphere kept the gate shut.

The instructors representing retreating demons redirected their forces back into the stronghold rather than allowing them to leave.

That created more pressure inside.

The northern junction received one of those returning groups, while the south-eastern formation encountered another concentrated attack later.

Tianlan reinforced the connecting ground rather than dumping the reserve directly onto the gate.

Yinxue and Ziyue held the south-east until a portion of his local reserve arrived through a secured route.

The larger reserve remained inside Creation.

The receiving courtyard gradually quieted because people crossing through it already had useful places to go.

Haotian maintained the practice passage without becoming the solution to each local problem.

That mattered more to him than whether the simulated fronts gained ground quickly.

Xuanyin ended the rehearsal only after the expanded positions remained stable through another cycle of pressure.

The review remained on the practice ground rather than turning into another council.

The alternate courtyard had been less forgiving but workable.

The first wave changed.

The reserve stayed useful.

Medical and technical traffic remained possible.

Gate control worked only after neighboring routes were secure.

The deployment principles survived the new geometry.

Blue Sphere wanted another full rehearsal for the remaining receiving candidates.

Xuanyin refused.

The storage district and western candidate were reviewed on foot instead.

The storage district offered more total space but broke it into several connected pockets, requiring Blue Sphere to think in smaller formation nodes rather than one broad perimeter. Tianlan immediately decided his reserve would stay inside Creation until one major internal road was secure. The western candidate remained too uncertain to trust without Haotian seeing it himself.

That raised the final communication problem.

The army needed orientation before leaving Creation.

Haotian did not have to open the full passage immediately.

Once he secured a receiving site, he could establish a much smaller connection first and report the actual shape of the ground to Xuanyin. Blue Sphere could rearrange the waiting first wave before anyone crossed.

Xuanyin added the failure condition.

"If you cannot open the small connection safely, do not try the large one."

"I know."

"If it closes before deployment starts, nobody moves."

Tianlan added, "That includes the reserve."

The procedure removed the need to rehearse every possible site.

By late afternoon, Xuanyin considered the deployment structure settled.

"No more full rehearsals tomorrow."

One Blue Sphere elder looked toward the practice grounds. "Not even one short deployment?"

"No."

"We could confirm the smaller first wave on the original ground."

"You already know how to fix it."

The elder did not answer.

"The army rests tomorrow," Xuanyin said.

The final rest day began more quietly than either rehearsal day.

Nobody was ordered into formation after waking, and commanders had been warned not to turn equipment checks into another excuse for training. Haotian woke before most of his family and remained seated for a time while circulating through his three cores separately.

Each responded without strain.

He did not test the Heaven Sundering Trinity Scripture.

Lianhua was already awake when he stepped outside.

She was checking the binding around her sword hilt for the third time.

"You are staring," she said.

"You checked that twice already."

"It was twice."

Haotian looked at the sword.

Lianhua set it aside.

Breakfast gathered the family gradually.

Yinxue and Ziyue arrived first.

Yueru wore training clothes despite the prohibition against another rehearsal.

Shuyue asked whether she was planning to invent a distinction between training and loosening up.

Yueru claimed the clothes were comfortable.

Yinxue suggested she remain comfortable while sitting down.

Xiangyin brought her spear but left it against the wall.

Tianlan arrived after checking the Falcons.

The two healthy birds remained fully recovered.

The third continued improving, could move and feed normally, and remained excluded from combat.

Yueru asked whether the Falcon understood it was being left behind.

"It understands that the other two keep leaving," Tianlan said.

"That is probably worse."

"It is not happy."

Haotian asked whether he had used a sensory bond.

"No."

The answer came immediately.

The family ate without bringing the stronghold map to the table.

Across Creation, preparation remained equally restrained.

Shuyue and Liora checked the medical areas that might receive casualties once the stronghold assault began. The larger treatment formation would stay inside Creation during the first phase, while embedded healers carried only immediate stabilization supplies.

Yanfei had more difficulty leaving equipment alone.

Haotian found her debating whether one additional cutting tool deserved space in the technical load.

"You do not need to say anything," she told him.

"I have not."

"You were going to."

Haotian waited.

Yanfei put the tool back with the heavier equipment staying inside Creation.

"The smaller kit can do the same thing. It just takes longer."

"Then if you need the larger one, bring it later."

"I know."

Haotian continued walking.

Yanfei watched him leave.

"You still did it."

One of the nearby blacksmiths wisely remained silent.

Umbrel received most of Haotian's attention that morning.

Their scouts reviewed the latest information without presenting any route as something he had to follow exactly. The preferred approach crossed broken terrain where exterior observation was weaker before reaching a wall service section that had not shown the same concentration of guards as known maintenance entrances.

Haotian memorized relationships rather than step counts.

Where patrols could see one another.

Where formation towers appeared to overlap.

Where a service route narrowed enough that one unexpected guard would create a problem.

Where the information ended.

Veil Shroud — Empty Silhouette would reduce what his presence presented to the stronghold.

Silent Flow — Soundless Crossing would control ordinary movement.

Neither would make him nonexistent.

The scouts warned him anyway.

"I know," Haotian said.

"I am required to say it," the Umbrel representative replied.

That seemed reasonable.

Xuanyin spent the morning checking readiness rather than tactics.

Several cultivators whose fatigue had returned during rehearsal were moved into later reserves or removed from the assault roster. Mixed teams were not rebuilt simply to restore the number twelve. If an incomplete team still functioned well with its existing relationships, Xuanyin preferred that over inserting an unfamiliar cultivator hours before battle.

Tianlan finalized the reserve arrangement.

The smaller mobile group would deploy once the receiving ground allowed it.

The larger group would remain inside Creation under a senior Blue Sphere officer.

If communication failed, they stayed where they were.

Xuanyin asked whether Tianlan was comfortable leaving so much strength somewhere he could not see.

"No."

She waited.

"It is still the right arrangement."

Xuanyin nodded.

Haotian walked through several legion areas during the afternoon.

The atmosphere differed from the earlier recovery days. Cultivators were no longer sleeping through exhaustion or wondering whether wounds would remove them from the stronghold assault. Most had accepted their assignments.

One mixed team had survived the outer campaign intact.

Haotian stopped near them.

Their commander rose.

"Do you need a report?"

"No."

The commander sat again.

One Marephoros cultivator repaired the wrap around a weapon grip.

A Pyrelith fighter had removed one boot and was complaining about a blister.

The Umbrel pair sat slightly apart but remained part of the conversation.

They were discussing whether the first meal after the stronghold battle would be better than the campaign food.

The Pyrelith cultivator believed victory justified better food.

The Veridian member beside him asked whether he intended to cook it himself.

The argument ended.

Haotian continued walking.

Lianhua joined him later.

She asked how long he intended to remain outside Creation before establishing the first small contact.

"I do not know."

"How long before you come back if the route is bad?"

"That depends on why it is bad."

"If the patrols are too dense?"

"I wait."

"If the formations make the approach wrong?"

"I change direction."

"If the assembly ground is occupied?"

"I decide whether clearing it quietly is realistic."

"And if it is not?"

"I go to the next site."

Lianhua nodded.

"Do not let everyone waiting inside Creation become a reason to force the opening."

"I will not."

The evening meal gathered the family again.

Xuanyin joined them after distributing the final command instructions.

For once, she brought no reports to the table.

Yueru looked at the empty space beside her hand.

"Did Blue Sphere run out of paper?"

Xuanyin looked at her.

Yueru returned to her food.

Shuyue covered a laugh.

The meal remained ordinary after that.

Before returning to the family residence, Haotian accompanied Xuanyin to the command area one final time because she wanted to make sure the maps prepared for the deployment commanders matched the version he had reviewed with Umbrel. Blue Sphere had already prepared smaller copies showing the preferred assembly ground, logistics courtyard, storage district, and uncertain western site.

Neither of them added anything new.

"If you use a site that is not on these maps, give us the shape of the ground before you widen the opening," Xuanyin said.

Haotian told her he would establish the smaller connection first.

If he found even that unsafe, he would close it and continue moving.

The first-wave staging areas would remain empty until contact.

The medical formation had the same instruction.

Nobody would gather beside the expected passage simply because morning arrived.

Haotian returned to find Lianhua still awake.

She checked the narrow protection around his forearm.

"The healer already looked at it."

"I know."

She pressed beside the healed section and watched him flex his fingers.

"It looks fine."

"That sounds less certain."

"It means I am not the healer."

She released his arm.

Haotian removed his outer robe and set it beside the armor he would wear in the morning.

Lianhua extinguished most of the light.

After lying down, she asked, "Do you want me to wake you if I rise first?"

"I will wake."

"That was not what I asked."

Haotian looked at her.

"Yes."

Lianhua settled back down.

Haotian circulated cultivation once through each of the three cores separately and ended there. Outside, the Dao Palace of Creation had become quiet enough that movement from distant recovery areas barely carried through the night. The first-wave cultivators slept in their ordinary legion quarters instead of waiting beside the staging ground.

Haotian closed his eyes.

Lianhua woke almost with him the following morning.

He washed and dressed before putting on the armor prepared the previous night. The protective band beneath the left forearm remained comfortable, the repaired shoulder section moved without catching, and nothing required adjustment beyond tightening one lower strap.

Lianhua dressed while he worked.

She did not put on the heaviest portions of her battle armor because she would remain inside Creation until Haotian established a receiving site.

The others began arriving soon afterward.

Yinxue came first.

Ziyue followed.

Shuyue and Yueru arrived together after apparently waking at nearly the same time despite their argument over who would rise first.

Yanfei appeared several minutes later and looked at Haotian's armor before glancing at the equipment she had finally agreed not to overload.

"I still think we should have brought the heavier cutting kit with the second wave."

"You left it inside Creation."

"I know."

"Then it is available if you need it."

Yanfei narrowed her eyes.

Shuyue smiled. "He did it again."

Tianlan arrived last after checking the Falcons.

The two healthy birds remained near the reserve areas.

The third had been moved farther from the increasing activity so it would not try to follow.

Xuanyin arrived while they were eating and carried only one small map.

"The first-wave commanders are awake," she said. "They are not assembling."

"Good."

"Blue Sphere asked twice."

Haotian looked at her.

"I told them no twice."

Yueru glanced between them. "How long before they ask a third time?"

Nobody doubted it would happen.

Xuanyin repeated only what had changed overnight.

Nothing important had.

The army would remain dispersed until Haotian established the small connection from a usable internal site.

Tianlan's smaller reserve would assemble when the first-wave call came.

His larger reserve would remain where it was until ordered.

Haotian opened the map once, traced the general relationship between the quieter approach, wall service section, and first two receiving candidates, then folded it again.

Lianhua studied him.

"If the service route is wrong?"

"I shift."

"And if the next one is wrong?"

"I reassess."

"You do not have to reach the wall on the first approach."

"I know."

Lianhua continued looking at him.

"I know," Haotian repeated.

That was enough.

The family finished eating without turning the meal into another council.

Haotian checked his armor again outside the residence and removed one small metal attachment from his belt after deciding it served no important purpose during infiltration.

Yanfei noticed.

"You made me remove half my equipment yesterday."

"And?"

"You were carrying something unnecessary."

"I removed it."

"That is not the point."

Shuyue looked between them. "It feels like the point."

Yanfei abandoned the argument.

The two healthy Frost Rainbow Falcons remained with Tianlan's reserve.

The third stayed in recovery.

Xuanyin met them near the departure ground with only a small Blue Sphere command group.

The first-wave staging areas remained empty.

No cultivator had been allowed to assemble early.

The Blue Sphere elder supervising the departure asked whether Haotian wanted formation support around the opening.

"No."

Xuanyin looked at him.

"It would only create more disturbance outside."

That ended the question.

Lianhua remained closest while Haotian prepared the connection.

She did not adjust his armor again.

The Dao Palace of Creation responded when Haotian directed awareness through the core within his sea of consciousness.

The passage formed gradually.

He kept it narrow.

Broken ground appeared beyond the boundary.

The remains of the cleared battlefield where the coalition had finished the second sweep showed no immediate movement.

Haotian extended ordinary perception first.

No voices.

No footsteps.

No active demonic formation pressure nearby.

Only after confirming that much did he widen the opening enough to pass.

Xuanyin looked through at the terrain.

"This is still the sweep area."

"Yes."

"No change you can see?"

"Not here."

Anything closer to the stronghold would need to be checked after he left.

Haotian turned toward his family.

Nobody offered a speech.

Yinxue told him they would be ready when he contacted them.

Ziyue nodded.

Xiangyin rested both hands on her spear.

Yueru looked as though she wanted to ask another question and stopped herself.

Shuyue told him not to delay everyone because he had found an Umbrel technique he wanted to correct in his head.

Haotian looked at her.

"It has happened before," she said.

Lianhua almost smiled.

Tianlan remained serious.

"If you open the small connection, I wait for Xuanyin's deployment order."

"Yes."

"If it closes again before deployment begins, I still wait."

"Yes."

Tianlan nodded.

Lianhua stepped closer after the others finished.

"Come back if the route is wrong."

"I will."

"If it is inconvenient, adapt. If it is wrong, come back."

Haotian understood the distinction.

"I know."

He crossed the boundary.

Blue Sphere's air carried dry stone, disturbed earth, old smoke, and traces of Abyss corruption that remained in damaged ground even after the demons were gone. Haotian moved several yards away from the opening and examined the surrounding terrain before turning back.

His family and Xuanyin remained visible inside Creation.

Haotian narrowed the connection.

The opening contracted smoothly until the living world disappeared and Blue Sphere's damaged landscape stood uninterrupted behind him.

He waited long enough to make sure the closing passage had produced no nearby response.

Nothing did.

Haotian began moving north-east.

He did not activate the Dao Palace of the Universe.

The first portion crossed territory the coalition had already cleared thoroughly, and using powerful spatial perception merely because it was available would provide little information ordinary senses could not gather more quietly.

He did not activate Veil Shroud either.

The terrain itself already concealed much of his movement.

Low ridges interrupted sight lines, damaged structures provided cover, and shallow depressions allowed him to travel without placing his silhouette against open sky.

The farther he moved, the fewer coalition traces remained.

The ground transitioned gradually from the heavily disturbed sweep region into territory that had received little direct fighting after the Main Rift closed. Haotian slowed there because movement acceptable inside cleared territory became less useful once the stronghold's outer defenders might observe it.

Distant figures appeared beyond one ridge.

Haotian lowered himself behind stone and waited.

Three demonic cultivators moved between two outer positions.

Their spacing suggested ordinary movement rather than a patrol searching outward.

Haotian watched until they disappeared.

He changed his route anyway.

The direct approach remained usable, but there was no reason to cross the same open ground immediately after defenders had passed through it.

The detour cost time.

Inside Creation, nobody had assembled the army.

That mattered.

Xuanyin knew Haotian would contact them only after finding information worth acting on, which allowed him to treat each stretch of terrain according to the conditions in front of him instead of imagining thousands of cultivators standing impatiently in formation.

The stronghold walls became visible only after he had traveled considerably farther.

Haotian did not climb the highest ridge to inspect them.

He chose a lower position screened by broken stone and remained below the crest.

From there he could see enough of the fortress to begin comparing it with Umbrel's reports without exposing himself against the skyline.

The demons had used the coalition's recovery period.

More defenders occupied several visible sections of wall.

Movement between towers had increased.

A damaged section had been repaired enough that Haotian could no longer identify the original fracture from this distance.

The major gates remained heavily occupied.

His attention moved toward the quieter side Umbrel had chosen for the initial approach.

The service sector had received additional attention but remained far less concentrated than the gate defenses. Occasional groups moved between the wall and smaller outer structures, and several figures followed routes that had not appeared on the older patrol records.

Haotian remained where he was.

One group moved along the wall.

Another appeared later from a lower service area.

He watched until permanent guards became distinguishable from people simply passing through.

The purpose of the observation was limited.

He did not need to solve the entire stronghold from one ridge.

He needed to know whether the proposed approach remained worth moving toward before he entered the range where concealment arts and defensive formations would matter far more.

For the moment, it did.

No large demonic formation occupied the outer ground.

The wall defenses were alert, but they were still arranged around the expectation of an assault approaching from outside.

Haotian settled lower behind the stone and continued observing the service sector.

He would move closer after the current patrol relationships became clear enough that he no longer had to guess which changes were temporary and which had become part of the stronghold's new defensive routine.
