Haotian remained below the ridge and continued watching the service sector until the movement along the wall stopped appearing irregular. The additional defenders were easy enough to distinguish once he saw several rotations: some belonged permanently to the wall, others moved between nearby military structures, and a third group accompanied supply traffic passing through the service district before returning deeper into the stronghold. Umbrel's earlier observations had not been wrong; the defenders had simply changed their routines after the Main Rift closed and the coalition disappeared from the exterior battlefield.
The changes confirmed what Haotian had expected. The demons understood that the coalition would eventually attack the stronghold and had increased the number of eyes looking outward, especially along routes that might once have been considered too minor to justify constant attention. Their preparations were disciplined, and anyone trying to follow the older Umbrel approach exactly would now have to deal with overlapping patrols, more frequent wall movement, and several newly active formations covering terrain that had previously been neglected.
Haotian had no reason to follow the old route exactly.
He watched one more group cross the lower service road, using the movement only to confirm how far the defenders' attention extended into the broken terrain beyond the wall. Several soldiers looked toward the high ridges and the more obvious depressions where approaching cultivators might conceal themselves, while the formation towers concentrated on the routes that offered the easiest movement toward the service structures. The ground between those routes had been left rough because the defenders expected the difficulty of crossing it to help direct intruders toward the areas they could monitor more efficiently.
Haotian rose without exposing himself above the ridge.
Veil Shroud — Empty Silhouette settled around his cultivation first. The art did not erase him from existence or turn his body invisible; it softened the distinction between his presence and the spiritual environment around him, allowing his cultivation to settle into the background fluctuations already passing through damaged terrain. Silent Flow — Soundless Crossing followed through his movement, removing the unnecessary transfer of force through loose stone as he descended the rear side of the ridge.
He did not head toward the service road.
A shallow depression curved away from it toward an area where the earth remained fractured from older fighting. Haotian followed that depression until the ridge blocked the stronghold's direct view, then allowed Earth to gather through the Dao Palace of the Universe. The ground beneath his feet loosened without collapsing, stone and compacted soil shifting around his body as he sank beneath the surface.
The earth closed above him after he disappeared.
Haotian traveled several yards below the ground rather than directly beneath the defenders. There was no advantage in moving close enough to patrols that their perception might have something unusual to notice when empty terrain existed beneath and around them. Earth yielded ahead of him and settled again behind, while the Dao Palace of the Universe gave him enough awareness of the surrounding material to avoid roots, buried debris, and the remains of older formation structures without breaking them unnecessarily.
The method required no tunnel.
Soil moved only through the space his body occupied and returned once he passed, leaving no open passage behind him for someone to discover later. Where fractured stone formed denser layers, he changed the pressure of Earth around it rather than forcing his way through and creating vibrations that could travel toward the surface. His progress remained steady enough that the patrol routes above ceased to matter almost immediately.
The first defensive formation extending beneath the ground appeared well before the wall.
Haotian sensed it through a narrow extension of the Dao Palace of the Universe rather than spreading perception through the entire service sector. Formation lines descended from one of the exterior towers and continued through buried anchors placed at intervals beneath the most accessible approach. Their purpose was not difficult to understand: cultivators using ordinary concealment or earth movement would still disturb the spiritual relationships connecting those anchors if they attempted to cross between them.
Haotian did not touch the formation.
He descended another dozen yards.
The buried anchors ended well above the depth he chose, and the relationship between them weakened naturally below their designed range. The demons had built the array to detect infiltrators approaching through useful ground, not someone capable of changing the depth of his route whenever the defensive structure ceased being convenient.
Earth carried him beneath it without resistance.
Farther ahead, another line extended deeper.
Haotian slowed only enough to examine its shape. This formation was attached to the wall foundation rather than the outer observation system, and several of its anchors descended through stone instead of soil, suggesting the builders had anticipated cultivators attempting to tunnel beneath the fortifications. The pattern curved downward near the service section and joined another relationship extending laterally beneath the wall.
He changed direction before reaching it.
The formation did not surround the entire stronghold at the same depth. Maintaining such a structure beneath walls of this scale would have consumed enormous resources for little benefit when most attackers would never reach that far underground. Instead, the demons had reinforced portions beneath known maintenance areas and older weak points where earth movement offered the most obvious method of entry.
Haotian moved west for several hundred yards while remaining underground.
The wall foundation changed above him as he traveled. Massive stone supports became less dense around a section that rested partly on natural bedrock rather than constructed footing, and the deep detection relationship followed the artificial foundation instead of continuing cleanly through the entire stone shelf. The defenders had chosen the stronger natural support precisely because it required less structural reinforcement.
That decision gave Haotian a cleaner route.
He rose slowly through the bedrock.
Earth alone became less efficient once the stone compressed beyond the point where shifting it would remain completely silent, so Haotian stopped forcing the material to yield and let Space take over the final portion. The Dao Palace of the Universe remained the only Dao Palace in use as he shortened the physical separation between gaps already present in the stone, passing through narrow natural fractures without widening them enough to leave obvious damage.
He reached the underside of the wall foundation without crossing a single active formation line.
The walls above remained busy.
Haotian could feel the movement transmitted faintly through the stone: soldiers walking along internal passages, heavier steps from armored cultivators, and the occasional vibration of equipment being moved through the service structure. None of it required him to know exactly who was above him. Their positions mattered only insofar as they helped him choose where to emerge.
He followed the foundation laterally.
Several wall chambers descended close enough to the bedrock that their floors became visible through the relationship between stone and Space. The first remained occupied. The second contained active formation equipment whose cycling pressure would make any disturbance unnecessarily noticeable. The third was little more than a storage recess built beneath a stairway, containing spare stone plates, repair materials, and several unused metal brackets.
Haotian chose the third.
Earth shifted carefully beneath the lowest section of the floor. He did not break the stone upward or create a hole large enough for someone to discover afterward. Space shortened the final separation, allowing him to pass through the floor where two construction layers already met before returning the relationship to normal behind him.
He emerged inside the stronghold.
The storage recess was dark except for a thin line of light entering beneath the door. Repair materials occupied shelves along one wall, and several replacement formation plates had been stacked beside a workbench without enough care to suggest anyone expected to use the room soon. Dust lay across the upper surfaces, disturbed only near the doorway where workers occasionally retrieved supplies.
Haotian remained still long enough to listen.
Footsteps moved along the passage outside, paused near another room, and continued upward. Two voices followed several breaths later, discussing the replacement of a damaged inscription plate somewhere along the exterior wall. Neither speaker stopped near the storage recess.
Haotian opened the door after they left.
The wall-maintenance passage beyond was narrow and built for workers rather than combat formations. Stone stairs rose toward the upper defenses while another route descended toward the service district inside the stronghold, and several smaller chambers branched from the passage at irregular intervals. Haotian closed the storage door behind him and moved downward.
Veil Shroud remained active.
The stronghold contained so much demonic cultivation that hiding completely would have been less useful than allowing his presence to disappear into the constant movement of energy around him. Soldiers, formation operators, weapons, defensive arrays, and countless active techniques produced overlapping fluctuations through the walls, giving Empty Silhouette far more environmental variation to work with than the relatively quiet terrain outside.
Silent Flow made the rest simple.
Haotian walked normally enough that his body did not need the exaggerated caution of someone creeping through an unfamiliar building. His steps simply carried no unnecessary rhythm into the stone, and his movement adjusted naturally whenever voices or activity occupied the route ahead. If a passage became busy, he took another. If several defenders crossed an intersection, he allowed them to continue and used the empty space left behind.
He never needed to hide from a patrol at arm's length.
The stronghold contained too many routes for that.
A stairwell opened into a broader maintenance level beneath the western service district, where workers and soldiers moved equipment between wall formations and interior supply areas. Haotian did not join the traffic. He stepped into an unused side chamber, descended through the floor with Earth, and traveled beneath the busier section until the vibrations above thinned.
He emerged again beneath an abandoned equipment room farther inward.
Nothing about the movement attracted attention.
The defenders were prepared for enemies crossing their walls, climbing their towers, breaking their gates, forcing maintenance doors, or attempting to sneak along service roads. They were not examining every section of stone beneath their own feet for a cultivator who could move through Earth, Space, and Umbrel concealment without committing himself to one method long enough for the defenses against that method to matter.
Haotian left the equipment room through a rear exit.
The western interior spread beyond it.
Military buildings occupied most of the district closest to the walls, arranged around broad roads capable of carrying formations rapidly toward threatened sectors. Barracks stood beside equipment stores, formation stations, training yards, and supply structures, while elevated walkways connected several larger buildings to the wall itself. The design made sense for a fortress expected to respond quickly to an external siege.
Almost everything moved outward.
Fresh soldiers left barracks and headed toward wall positions.
Supply carts carried weapons, spirit resources, and formation components toward the outer defenses.
Messengers passed from deeper command areas toward the western towers.
Several reserve companies assembled in open courtyards before receiving orders that sent them north or south along the wall.
Haotian observed from the upper level of an unused structure.
The pattern told him more than the number of soldiers.
The demons had spent their recovery period preparing to meet the coalition outside the fortress. Their reserves were distributed according to wall sectors, their supply routes were organized around reinforcing gates and towers, and many of the internal roads existed primarily to move soldiers rapidly toward exterior defenses. Even after the Main Rift vanished, the stronghold's basic military logic had remained oriented toward preventing an army from entering.
Haotian moved deeper.
He did not need to cross every road on foot.
When a broad avenue carried too much military traffic to justify walking through it, he entered the earth beneath a nearby structure and emerged on the opposite side. When upper walkways offered cleaner observation, Silent Flow carried him across them between troop movements without the people below ever looking upward. When a building blocked the route he wanted, Space shortened the distance through existing interior separations rather than forcing him around several guarded intersections.
The infiltration became faster once he understood the stronghold's internal rhythm.
He was not searching for a hidden chamber or assassinating a specific commander. His objective required open ground, useful roads, manageable defensive relationships, and enough surrounding space for thousands of coalition cultivators to establish themselves before the demons understood what had happened. That made the largest military spaces more important than the most carefully protected ones.
The first candidate lay north of the service district.
Haotian inspected it from beneath an adjacent administrative building before rising into an empty upper room that overlooked the courtyard. The ground was broad enough for several hundred cultivators but not thousands, and three barracks opened directly onto it. Soldiers moved through continuously, while one elevated tower gave formation operators an unobstructed view of almost the entire area.
Haotian rejected it.
The courtyard could be cleared, but doing so quietly would remove the advantage of opening Creation inside the stronghold. Even if the first wave killed the nearby soldiers quickly, the limited space would force later formations into surrounding roads before the coalition understood which directions were already reacting.
He continued south-west.
A second candidate looked better from the map than it did in person.
The open area belonged to a supply complex, with enough room between warehouses for a large formation to emerge. The buildings created useful cover from distant observation, and several internal roads connected the district to deeper portions of the stronghold.
The problem was traffic.
Supply wagons crossed the area constantly.
Workers moved between warehouses.
Two formation lines passed beneath the paving to support defensive systems farther west.
Opening Creation there would place the coalition inside a district full of objects and people that immediately restricted movement.
Haotian moved on.
He spent no more time than necessary examining either failed location.
Inside the Dao Palace of Creation, Xuanyin and the first-wave commanders were waiting for information rather than for a predetermined hour. Haotian therefore had no reason to make a poor site work merely because he had already reached it.
The western assembly district lay farther inward.
Umbrel had identified it only partially before the coalition withdrew its exterior scouts because observation from outside had never provided a clean view of the entire space. Haotian approached from below, following the vibration of heavy troop movement through the earth until the ground above widened beyond the dense foundations surrounding the military buildings.
He rose inside an unused storage structure along the western edge.
The view from its second floor immediately distinguished the area from the courtyards he had already rejected.
The assembly district centered on a broad stone square large enough to organize multiple military companies at once. Several roads entered from different directions, with the northern and eastern approaches wide enough to carry substantial formations while smaller routes connected the district to neighboring military structures. Barracks and supply buildings bordered portions of the square without closing it so tightly that newly arriving cultivators would be trapped between walls.
The square was occupied.
That did not make it unsuitable.
Haotian watched the movement below.
One company completed assembly near the northern side and left toward the wall.
Another entered several minutes later from the east.
Supply wagons crossed the southern portion but did not remain there, and most soldiers used the northern half because it provided the cleanest connection to the roads leading toward the exterior defenses.
The center-south portion stayed comparatively open between rotations.
Haotian did not decide immediately.
He remained inside the building and watched another full cycle.
The same pattern repeated with small variations.
A company arrived.
Orders were distributed.
The formation reorganized.
The soldiers departed.
The square emptied substantially before the next group entered.
Haotian followed the roads beyond the district through controlled extensions of the Dao Palace of the Universe and ordinary observation from several different positions. The northern route widened toward military intersections where coalition formations could expand once they secured the first streets. The eastern route connected deeper into the stronghold, while the western structures provided enough physical separation from the wall that defenders on the fortifications would not immediately see what was happening below.
The south offered space for command and medical movement once the first waves created enough depth.
Haotian left the observation room and descended through the building while the company below continued preparing to move. He did not cross the square immediately. Earth carried him beneath the lower floor and into the ground below the paving, allowing him to examine the center-south portion of the district from underneath rather than relying only on what he had seen from above.
The foundation beneath that section was simpler than the ground near the northern barracks. Several shallow reinforcement lines passed through the outer portions of the square, but none of the deeper formation anchors he had encountered near the walls extended through the area he was considering. A communication relationship ran westward toward one of the nearby military structures, though its physical supports remained far enough from the center-south paving that the opening of Creation would not have to overlap them directly.
Haotian followed the ground east for a short distance and then north, checking how quickly the open square narrowed once the surrounding buildings began influencing movement. The eastern side lost useful width sooner than the maps inside Creation had suggested because storage platforms extended farther into the road than Umbrel had been able to see from outside. The northern approach was broader and could carry a much larger formation, but it also received most of the military traffic passing through the district.
He returned beneath the southern half.
From there, the western assembly district made more practical sense than either of the courtyards he had already rejected. The first wave would have enough room to form around the passage without immediately being forced into surrounding roads, while the northern and eastern routes offered directions in which the coalition could expand once the receiving ground became stable. The buildings along the western side also limited how much of the square could be observed directly from the outer wall, and the southern portion provided enough separation for Xuanyin's command formation to move away from the passage after the first secured route developed.
Haotian rose again inside the same empty structure and resumed watching the square.
The company that had been forming along the northern side received its final order and began leaving in organized ranks. The first groups moved toward the western wall, followed by the remainder once the road ahead cleared. Their departure did not empty the district completely, because workers and several smaller supply groups remained nearby, but the center-south paving opened enough for Haotian to compare the actual available space with the first-wave dimensions Blue Sphere had rehearsed inside Creation.
The match was not exact.
The real district narrowed more sharply along the eastern side, and the southern approach contained one additional storage structure not shown clearly on the earlier map. Neither problem made the location unusable. They meant the first wave would need to be oriented slightly farther north than planned, while the eastern holding group would have less depth until the adjoining road was secured.
Haotian continued watching rather than opening the connection immediately.
Several supply wagons entered from the south-east and crossed the square toward the western structures. They remained in the district only long enough to unload equipment before continuing toward another road. The workers who accompanied them did not stay either, and the center-south portion opened again once the wagons left.
The rhythm mattered because the first Creation connection did not need to appear the moment the square was at its emptiest. Haotian only needed enough undisturbed space to establish the small opening, report the actual geometry to Xuanyin, and allow Blue Sphere to reorganize the waiting formations before anyone crossed. If another company entered while that preparation occurred, he could close the small connection and wait for the next rotation without losing anything except time.
He shifted to another room that gave him a clearer view of the southern road.
A smaller reserve group passed through several minutes later but did not stop in the square. Two formation workers followed behind them and entered the communication structure along the western edge. Haotian watched long enough to confirm that neither worker had any reason to approach the portion of the district he intended to use.
The next period remained quieter.
That gave him enough information to settle the remaining questions.
The first wave would need to emerge facing north-east rather than directly north. Blue Sphere's holding formation could use the wider northern side while the eastern group secured the road beyond the storage platforms. Umbrel would have immediate access to several smaller passages between military buildings, and Veridian Prime could inspect the paving and underground routes before later waves filled the district. The southern side could remain comparatively open for casualty movement and, once enough surrounding ground had been secured, for Xuanyin's command formation.
Haotian stayed where he was while another troop rotation began farther north.
He no longer needed to search for a different receiving area, but that did not mean he needed to act the instant the decision was made. The district remained useful because of the way soldiers moved through it, and opening Creation at the wrong point in that movement would waste one of its advantages.
He waited for the current company to finish crossing the northern half of the square.
When the last ranks left and the center-south paving opened again, Haotian directed his awareness toward the core within his sea of consciousness.
The first connection was deliberately small.
Space opened beside the interior wall rather than across the square outside, leaving only enough room for Haotian to see part of the prepared area inside Creation. Xuanyin had expected the contact and stood nearby with several Blue Sphere commanders, but the first-wave formations had not gathered behind them. The empty ground confirmed that her earlier orders had been followed.
Xuanyin leaned closer to the opening and looked past Haotian into the room around him. "You are inside?"
"Yes."
"And the western assembly district?"
"It is usable, but the reconstruction was not exact."
One of the Blue Sphere elders immediately brought the practice map closer. Xuanyin shifted aside so he could see through the connection as well, then asked Haotian to walk them through the differences before anyone began moving.
Haotian started with the eastern side because it required the largest adjustment. "The storage platforms extend farther into the eastern route than Umbrel could see from outside. If the first wave faces directly north like we rehearsed, the eastern group will have less room than we planned and the people behind them will start collecting around the passage."
The elder studied the layout and moved the eastern markers inward. "Then the front needs to turn."
"North-east," Haotian said. "The northern road is broader than we expected. Use that space first, and let the eastern group secure the road beyond the storage platforms before you give them more people."
Xuanyin traced the southern half of the map with one finger. "What about the ground behind the passage? We planned to preserve one side for wounded going back into Creation."
"That still works. The southern portion remains open between supply rotations. Keep it clear during the first deployment and there will be enough room for the return lane."
"And later?"
"Once the first formations have pushed north, there should be enough space farther south for you to bring command across without sitting beside the passage."
Xuanyin nodded and looked at the Blue Sphere elder. "Then we keep command inside until that space is actually secured. I do not want people crossing early simply because the map says we should eventually be there."
The elder agreed and removed the command markers from the first deployment.
