The western Demon General's death had opened the road, but Haotian did not allow the victory to change the pace of the advance. By the time the crater left by Sovereign Fang Collapse had disappeared behind several layers of marching coalition cultivators, the foremost mixed formations were already pushing beyond the western military district and into the roads leading east. Demonic bodies, ruined formation pillars, and the remains of the stronghold's command structures were being left behind almost as quickly as they had been destroyed. What had been the center of the fighting only a short time earlier was becoming part of the corridor through which replacements, healers, and supplies could move safely behind the spearhead.
Haotian remained close to the leading formations rather than drifting back toward the command position. His shoulder still carried the shallow wound left by the western General, but the injury did not interfere with his movement, and there was no reason to remove himself from the front merely to have it treated more thoroughly. The strongest resistance still lay ahead, while the formations immediately behind him had already begun closing around the gaps created by the recent duel. The army did not need to wait for its strongest cultivator to appear untouched before continuing its work.
The shape of the offensive had become clearer now that the deployment phase was completely behind them. The main coalition was no longer a broad mass expanding from the Dao Palace of Creation in every direction, because most of the formations that had initially secured neighboring streets were already turning back toward the primary line of advance. The strongest mixed legions occupied the center and immediate flanks of that movement, forming a dense body that could absorb resistance without losing the forward pressure established by the first waves. Ahead of them, the strongest individuals in the coalition moved near enough to one another that any enemy capable of threatening the spearhead would quickly encounter more than one of them.
Haotian held the forward center, but his wives were not crowded around him. Lianhua and Yinxue moved with Sword formations slightly to the left of the main road, while Yueru and Ziyue occupied different angles from which they could cut apart techniques or wider defensive concentrations before those reached the center. Xiangyin and Yanfei remained close enough to support the same portion of the formation without forcing spear and Frostfire into the same space, while Shuyue stayed nearer the mixed teams where her Dao Palace of Virtues could stabilize more people than it would if she fought alone at the very front. Tianlan held the eastern edge of the arrowhead with the two healthy Frost Rainbow Falcons ranging through the air above him.
The other high-level coalition cultivators filled the spaces between them rather than forming a separate elite formation. Their purpose was not to create a visible wall of powerful individuals that ordinary troops could hide behind, but to ensure that no strong demonic officer or sudden concentration could break the shape of the advance before the mixed formations reacted. Lesser Immortal Lord-level cultivators from the allied worlds moved where their own strengths best matched the terrain, supporting the same forward pressure while leaving the ordinary formations enough room to fight. The result was an arrowhead composed of overlapping strength instead of one narrow point.
Behind that point came the largest mass of the army. The mixed legions advanced in depth, with fresh teams positioned behind those already engaged so the foremost cultivators could rotate without forcing the entire formation to stop. Healers and more vulnerable support groups traveled inside the corridor created by the stronger formations rather than along exposed flanks, while reserve forces remained far enough behind that they could be directed toward whichever portion of the arrowhead experienced unexpected resistance. Supplies moved through the same protected interior, linking the advancing army back toward the reduced passage into the Dao Palace of Creation without requiring the entire route to remain crowded with combat troops.
Smaller specialist groups continued leaving the main body, but they were no longer treating every side street as territory that had to be permanently occupied. Umbrel cultivators entered alleys long enough to intercept messengers, eliminate officers attempting to organize attacks against the flank, or confirm that a route did not conceal a larger formation. Veridian teams descended into underground passages where necessary, checked whether those routes could threaten the corridor, and either sealed them or returned once the danger had been removed. Celestara cultivators used the rooftops and elevated structures in the same way, securing the air above the main movement without allowing themselves to become scattered across the entire western district.
The distinction became increasingly important as the coalition advanced. A side road did not need a hundred cultivators standing in it merely because the coalition had crossed the intersection beside it. If the road contained an active formation, a hidden route, or a demonic unit capable of striking the rear, that threat was removed; if it contained nothing useful, the army left it behind. The stronghold was too large for the coalition to waste strength pretending that possession required a body on every stone.
Xuanyin reached the same conclusion through the reports arriving at command. The battlefield map showed several coalition groups drifting outward after local victories, some pursuing withdrawing demons into roads that did not contribute to the main direction of the assault. None had yet become dangerously isolated, but the pattern was visible early enough that allowing it to continue would eventually stretch the concentrated army into a broad occupation force. Xuanyin placed two fingers against the western section of the map and followed the main route east.
"Pull these three formations back toward the primary corridor," she ordered. "They've already cleared what can threaten the rear."
One communication officer glanced at the markers and hesitated. "The northern group says there are still demons withdrawing through two side streets."
"If they're withdrawing away from us, let them withdraw," Xuanyin replied. "We're not spending a legion chasing soldiers who are leaving the path of the army. Umbrel can watch the routes and tell us if they turn back."
The officer immediately relayed the instruction.
Another report arrived from a Blue Sphere formation farther south. Their commander had secured several connected streets and requested enough reinforcements to hold all of them in case the demons attempted to return. Xuanyin studied the routes and saw no critical command structure, supply point, or underground access among them. Holding the entire area would require hundreds of cultivators to remain behind while the arrowhead continued east.
"Keep the intersection that protects the corridor and abandon the rest," she ordered. "Destroy any working Abyss systems before they leave. We are not occupying houses and empty roads."
The correction spread through the formations already beginning to widen. Groups that had advanced farther than necessary pulled back toward the main route after breaking whatever infrastructure might threaten the coalition later, while specialists remained only where the terrain required continued observation. The change did not shrink the corridor into a single street, because the army still required room for thousands of cultivators to move and fight. It prevented that corridor from becoming a collection of disconnected fronts.
Haotian noticed the effect from the spearhead as formations began returning toward the main body. The western district behind them remained badly damaged and largely stripped of useful Abyss infrastructure, but the coalition did not attempt to cover every block with permanent defenders. The army's strength remained concentrated where it could be brought into the next fight. That mattered more than the appearance of controlling a larger portion of the map.
If they spread evenly through the stronghold, the numerical advantage accumulated through six allied worlds would begin losing its meaning. A thousand coalition cultivators occupying ten separate areas could be attacked as ten smaller forces, allowing local demonic commanders to concentrate against one section while the others remained too far away to intervene quickly. Even Haotian and the Lesser Immortal Lords could not be everywhere at once if the army stretched itself across enough districts. The Abyss would finally gain the opportunity to choose favorable local battles.
A concentrated advance created the opposite problem for the defenders. Any demonic formation standing directly ahead of the arrow was not facing one Blue Sphere team, one Pyrelith formation, or one group from Veridian Prime. It was facing all of them layered behind the strongest cultivators in the coalition, with reserves close enough to replace losses and specialists close enough to answer unusual terrain. The demons could possess more soldiers elsewhere in the fortress and still be outnumbered at the place where the actual collision occurred.
Haotian looked east through the roads ahead. The stronghold had been built with enough depth that several military districts still separated the coalition from its farther interior, and the walls visible beyond the buildings gave no clear indication of how much territory remained to be crossed before the eventual clockwise turn became practical. None of that required the arrow to broaden. They needed depth before width.
A damaged intersection opened ahead, and a coalition scout returned from the eastern road before Haotian reached it. The cultivator's clothing carried dust from recent fighting, but his breathing remained stable enough that he had not been pursued closely. He stopped beside the leading Blue Sphere officer and delivered the report without ceremony.
"Large movement ahead. Demonic troops are gathering at the next major intersection."
The officer looked toward Haotian.
"How many are already there?" Haotian asked.
"Not enough for what they're trying to build," the scout replied. "One full company, part of another, and formation guards around the eastern structures. More are approaching from at least two routes."
Haotian extended his awareness ahead without forcing it through every defensive layer. The Dao Palace of the Universe showed movement converging toward one point, several groups approaching from different directions while the soldiers already present spread across a broad intersection. The demons were finally attempting exactly what a competent defender should do against a penetrating force: gather enough bodies ahead of it to turn the road into a wall before the spearhead arrived.
Their problem was time.
The formations already at the intersection were still adjusting. Several defensive relationships had not yet connected, and one reinforcement group remained far enough north that it would need to cross multiple streets before joining the concentration. Another approached from the south-west along a route that would bring it dangerously close to the coalition flank before it ever reached the intended defensive position.
Haotian looked at the scout. "How long ago did they start gathering?"
"Recent enough that the northern group was still marching when we pulled back."
That was all Haotian needed.
He turned toward the leading formations. "We don't wait for them to finish."
The Blue Sphere officer raised his weapon and passed the command through the frontline. Mixed teams tightened their spacing, the cultivators who had been rotating toward the rear settled back into their places, and fresh formations moved closer behind the arrowhead. Pyrelith fighters shifted toward the side from which the unfinished defensive structures would become visible, while Umbrel cultivators began disappearing through the roads that could bring the northern reinforcements into the intersection.
Above them, Celestara cultivators rose toward the elevated approaches. Tianlan looked toward the same convergence point and adjusted the path of his spear group without leaving the larger formation, while the two Frost Rainbow Falcons widened their flight over the eastern roofs. Lianhua and the other wives moved with the arrowhead rather than racing ahead of it. The main strength of the assault came from the fact that everyone dangerous enough to break the obstacle would arrive together.
The coalition accelerated east.
Behind them, the western district continued receding into the protected corridor. Ahead, the Abyss was trying to assemble enough soldiers to stop the arrow.
The arrow reached them before they were ready.
The eastern convergence had been chosen well enough that, given another several minutes, it might have become the first position inside the stronghold capable of forcing the coalition to slow. Four broad roads fed into the intersection, two elevated walkways connected military structures on opposite sides, and a reinforced command platform stood behind the eastern approach where formation guards were already raising defensive layers. The demonic commander responsible for the position had clearly understood that a narrow road would only allow the coalition to concentrate against whatever stood directly in front of it. By choosing an open junction, he intended to gather enough troops that numbers could finally begin working in the Abyss Netherworld Sect's favor.
The problem was that most of those troops had not arrived yet. One full company occupied the eastern side of the intersection, another had only partially entered from the south, and the formation guards were still connecting the defensive pillars meant to turn the surrounding buildings into one larger barrier. A northern reinforcement column was approaching quickly but remained several streets away, while another group had been redirected from the western wall and was still marching toward the southern route. The commander had enough soldiers to begin building a defense, but not enough to complete the one he had planned.
He knew it.
Orders moved through the intersection with increasing urgency as the sound of the coalition advance grew louder from the west. Soldiers already in position widened their ranks so the next companies could enter without forcing everyone to reorganize, while formation guards fed cultivation through pillars that had not yet settled into a stable relationship. Several officers stood along the eastern road waiting to direct the arriving reserves toward predetermined sections rather than letting them pile into whatever open ground remained. Nothing about the preparation suggested that the demons had forgotten how to defend their own stronghold.
The leading coalition formations appeared before the last defensive layer formed.
The demonic commander saw them and immediately changed what he could. "Close the western line now. Stop waiting for the northern company," he ordered, and the soldiers already present tightened before the incomplete formation guards finished adjusting. "Southern group, move to the left flank. If the second company arrives, they fill the center." His decisions reduced the width of the defense and abandoned part of the original plan, but leaving incomplete gaps would have been worse.
The Blue Sphere cultivators at the arrowhead did not charge straight into the center simply because the enemy was unfinished. They accelerated only until the first demonic line committed to holding the road, then expanded enough to fix those soldiers in place without losing connection to the formations behind them. Weapons and defensive techniques met across the western edge of the intersection, and the demons discovered immediately that even their incomplete force could not simply shove the coalition backward through raw numbers. The Blue Sphere line absorbed the collision and stayed where it was.
The demonic commander reacted by ordering the southern company farther around the flank. If those soldiers could widen past the Blue Sphere line, they might force the coalition arrowhead to stretch sideways and create enough room for the reinforcements still approaching. The southern troops moved before the order finished traveling through their ranks, using the open portion of the intersection to swing around the coalition's left side. Their movement was correct and nearly fast enough.
Marephoros reached the gap first.
Water spread low across the paving, not as a broad wave intended to knock the soldiers down but as pressure shaped against the direction of their movement. The southern company continued forward and found every lateral step taking more effort than expected, while the soldiers nearest the outer edge were gradually forced inward by the resistance gathering against them. Their formation did not stop, but it could no longer widen at the pace its commander needed.
The Blue Sphere line pressed at the same moment. The demons at the center were forced to commit more strength forward, which meant the southern group could not simply pull men away from the middle to overcome the Marephoros pressure. The intersection became crowded before the second company had even arrived. The very space chosen to allow the Abyss to gather began working against the forces already present.
Pyrelith cultivators moved toward the unfinished defensive structures.
Several formation guards saw them coming and forced more cultivation into the pillars, trying to activate whatever portion of the network could function before the coalition reached it. One section of the barrier rose across the eastern half of the intersection, thick enough to protect the command platform and part of the reserve area behind it. The other sections remained unstable.
A Pyrelith officer watched the incomplete relationship for one breath. "Hit the western pillar first."
Fire and Metal struck together.
The pillar did not shatter immediately. Its outer casing absorbed the first impact, and the formation guards redirected enough energy into it to prevent the inscription lines from breaking under the heat. Pyrelith attacked again before that redistribution settled, this time striking the connection between the pillar and the paving rather than the reinforced upper structure.
Stone fractured around the base.
The pillar tilted.
The unfinished formation attempted to compensate by pulling more power through the eastern supports.
Yanfei saw the redistribution from the arrowhead and lifted one hand. "Keep it there."
Frostfire crossed the road toward the support taking the additional strain. Cold seized the structure while its inscriptions were carrying more power than they had been designed to handle alone, and Fire followed through the same material before the formation guards could redirect the burden again. Cracks opened across the pillar. The barrier behind it flickered.
Ziyue's sword rose.
"Dao of the Sword — Tenfold Elements, Severing Arc."
She narrowed the attack rather than sending it across the entire intersection. Metal and Lightning entered the exposed inscription lines where the two damaged supports still tried to communicate, while Wind carried the severing force through the remaining connection before the guards could reinforce it. The unfinished barrier collapsed toward the eastern side.
The demonic commander abandoned the formation immediately. He did not waste soldiers trying to preserve a system that had already failed before becoming complete. "Formation guards into the line. Leave the pillars."
The guards obeyed.
That decision preserved several dozen experienced cultivators who would otherwise have died defending broken infrastructure. They joined the troops in front of the eastern platform and reinforced the center directly. The commander had lost the defensive structure he wanted but kept the people capable of fighting without it.
Haotian saw the choice from the front and approved of the logic even as the coalition continued dismantling the position. The demons were not giving him easy victories through pride or attachment to their own formations. They were choosing whatever preserved the greatest amount of useful strength at each stage. The problem remained that every correction was being made after the coalition had already forced the previous plan to fail.
The northern reinforcements finally approached within two streets of the intersection.
Umbrel cultivators had been waiting for them.
The northern company did not walk into an obvious ambush. Scouts moved ahead, side passages were checked, and several cultivators spread along the rooftops to make sure the narrow approach did not hide a coalition formation. They found no large force blocking the road. The company therefore continued moving toward the intersection.
Umbrel did not need a large force.
The first strike killed one officer near the rear rather than the commander at the front. Another shadow cultivator appeared briefly beside a communication bearer and cut him down before disappearing between two damaged buildings. A third attack came from above, striking the soldier responsible for maintaining the company's relationship with the formation ahead.
The northern commander understood what was happening almost immediately. "Ignore them. Keep moving."
That order was correct.
The Umbrel teams were not trying to annihilate the reinforcement column.
They were trying to slow it.
Every attack forced someone to turn. Every dead officer required another soldier to take responsibility for the section he had been managing, while every route checked for hidden attackers consumed a little more time. The company continued toward the intersection, but its disciplined marching pace became a sequence of short accelerations and interruptions.
Celestara cultivators controlled the elevated route above them.
When the northern company tried sending its fastest members across the rooftops to reach the defensive position before the main body, Light and Shadow techniques met them in the open space between buildings. The demons did not fall helplessly, but every aerial exchange forced them to defend instead of moving forward. The quickest route ceased being quicker.
By the time the northern company reached the final street, the battle at the intersection had already changed.
The original demonic center had lost its barrier and was being driven backward by the concentrated Blue Sphere line. Marephoros pressure still prevented the southern group from widening far enough to envelop the coalition, while Pyrelith attacks broke whatever dense concentrations appeared behind the front. The command platform had become merely another elevated structure rather than the protected center of a completed defensive network. The position the northern company had been ordered to reinforce no longer existed in the form described by its orders.
Its commander saw that before entering the open ground.
He stopped the first ranks.
The men behind him compressed only slightly before the signal traveled back.
Across the intersection, the demonic commander already fighting there saw the northern company finally arrive and raised one arm toward the empty section on his right. "Enter from the north. Take the flank before they close it."
The northern commander looked at the route he had been given.
Umbrel cultivators were already appearing along the side streets behind him.
Celestara forces held the elevated approach.
Ahead, coalition formations had moved farther into the intersection than the report he had received only minutes earlier had suggested.
He made his decision.
"Forward. Right side."
The northern company entered.
It was the best choice available.
Haotian saw them come.
He did not redirect the entire arrowhead toward the new threat. The main Blue Sphere formation was already winning the center, and weakening it now would give the defenders the exact opening they needed to regain structure. Instead, he shifted several high-level cultivators toward the northern edge while keeping the main mass pointed east.
Lianhua moved with them.
Cloud-Sundering Steps carried her across the changing formation without requiring the troops behind her to break their own spacing. She reached the first northern defenders just as they attempted to establish a second line along the edge of the intersection. Her sword crossed the forming barrier before its supporting cultivators finished settling into position.
"Voidpierce Sword Sutra."
Space tightened along the edge.
The barrier broke locally rather than collapsing across its entire width, but that single breach was enough for the mixed coalition teams behind Lianhua to enter before the northern company could finish spreading. Soldiers who had marched through several streets expecting to reinforce an established defense were suddenly fighting to create their own position from nothing. The company remained disciplined, yet it never became part of the larger force it had been sent to join.
Yueru attacked the officers trying to connect the two demonic groups.
She did not chase the strongest person she could see. Her sword repeatedly cut through the techniques used to pass support, instructions, or defensive cultivation between the northern arrivals and the soldiers already fighting at the center. Every severed relationship kept the two groups behaving like neighboring units instead of one larger formation.
Yinxue moved through the resulting gaps.
The demons tried to rebuild behind her.
She broke that too.
The southern reinforcements arrived last.
They came from a road farther behind the coalition's left flank and had received orders telling them that a defensive concentration was being formed at the eastern intersection. Their officers expected to arrive behind friendly lines, move through a secured approach, and reinforce whichever section had begun weakening under the coalition attack. Instead, the first scout emerged from the side road and found coalition cultivators already occupying the route between his company and the intersection.
He returned to his commander.
"The intersection has been reached."
The commander frowned. "Reached by whom?"
"The coalition. They're already fighting inside it."
The answer changed everything.
The southern company slowed rather than continuing blindly. Its commander pushed his perception forward and felt enough cultivation ahead to understand that the position had not merely encountered the coalition spearhead. The spearhead had already passed through part of it.
He could still attack from the side.
Doing so might create pressure against the coalition flank and help the defenders already engaged at the intersection.
He gave the order.
The company turned toward the coalition corridor.
Veridian teams saw the movement first.
They had been working around a damaged underground route that crossed beneath the southern approach and had originally intended only to determine whether the passage remained usable. The reinforcement company changed that calculation. Leaving the underground path intact would give the demons another route through which smaller groups might enter behind the coalition.
The Veridian leader looked once toward the approaching company. "Collapse the southern supports. Leave the eastern section open until our people clear it."
Wood cultivation withdrew from the weakened stone.
The underground route failed beneath the side road.
The surface did not disappear completely, but enough paving dropped and shifted to break the marching formation just before it reached the coalition flank. The leading soldiers remained standing beyond the worst of the collapse, while the center was forced to spread around fractured ground and the rear lost sight of what happened ahead.
The southern commander reacted quickly. "Do not enter the collapse. Split around it."
His company divided.
That decision preserved the soldiers.
It also ensured they would not reach the coalition as one body.
Mixed teams from the protected flank turned toward the first half.
Another formation met the second.
The company that had been intended to complete the defensive mass at the intersection became two separate fights before either group saw the commander they had been sent to reinforce.
