Chapter 543 - Chapter 421

Haotian continued through the center.

The demonic commander holding the intersection finally recognized that the gathering had failed completely. One company remained engaged in front of him, the northern reinforcements had entered too late to connect properly, and the southern group had been split before reaching the position. His formation guards were fighting as ordinary soldiers because the structures they were supposed to operate had already been destroyed.

He still did not order an immediate rout.

"Eastern ranks withdraw by sections," he commanded. "Center holds until the northern company clears space."

The demons began retreating in layers.

The first group gave ground while another maintained the line, then the second moved after the first reached the eastern street. It was slower than fleeing but far more orderly, and the commander clearly intended to preserve enough of the force that it could be used again deeper inside the stronghold. Haotian watched the movement and understood that allowing the withdrawal to complete would give the Abyss exactly what it had failed to create here.

He stepped farther into the intersection.

"Break the center."

The coalition moved with him.

Blue Sphere increased the pressure against the holding line.

Marephoros shifted from preventing lateral movement to controlling the paths through which the rear ranks were trying to withdraw.

Pyrelith waited until the demons compressed around the eastern exit.

Then Fire and Metal struck.

The organized retreat broke.

Not because the soldiers suddenly panicked, but because the spacing required for one section to pass cleanly behind another disappeared under the attack. The rear group was forced sideways, the center stopped moving, and the front could no longer tell whether it was supposed to continue holding or retreat with the men behind it. Several officers tried restoring the sequence.

Haotian reached them first.

Heaven-Piercer Step carried him through the broken line without being called aloud. An officer raised a heavy defensive technique as Haotian entered.

"Seraph Shatter Palm."

The defense shattered inward.

The officer fell into the soldiers behind him.

Haotian moved again.

Another commander tried to gather the nearest formation guards around himself.

"Fist of Ruin."

The strike collapsed the protection across his chest and drove him backward before the new formation settled.

Ziyue's Severing Arc crossed the space farther east.

Yinxue and Yueru broke the attempts to rebuild around the retreat.

The demonic commander finally understood that preserving the position was no longer possible.

"Withdraw east. Anyone who can move, move."

The order reached only part of the surviving force.

Those who heard it began retreating.

Those who did not continued fighting.

The coalition did not chase every fleeing soldier into every road. Umbrel teams followed officers and communication bearers, Celestara watched elevated escape routes, and the main arrowhead continued through the intersection instead of scattering after individuals. The objective had never been to kill every demon personally.

It was to keep the stronghold from gathering enough of them in one place.

The northern company began withdrawing toward a separate route rather than letting itself be trapped between Lianhua's section and the central advance. Its commander had arrived too late to reinforce the defensive concentration but early enough to realize that remaining after the intersection fell would only destroy his entire company. He ordered an organized withdrawal north-east. Umbrel cultivators harassed the movement without forcing the whole coalition to follow.

The southern groups disengaged even farther from the original objective. One retreated through damaged buildings after losing access to the collapsed road, while the other moved south in search of a route around the coalition corridor. Neither had ever joined the defense it was ordered to strengthen. The concentration existed only in the reports still moving through the stronghold.

The coalition occupied the intersection.

It did not stop.

The command platform was stripped of anything that could help the Abyss recover the area and destroyed before the last mixed formations passed. Veridian teams confirmed that the underground routes behind the new frontline could no longer support a large flanking movement, while Celestara cultivators secured the elevated roads long enough for the main body to clear them. Once those dangers were removed, the specialists began returning toward the arrow.

The eastern drive resumed almost immediately.

Haotian moved at the head of it and watched the pattern repeat farther ahead without allowing each recurrence to become another prolonged battle. Demonic officers identified useful intersections, reserve yards, and military roads where several formations could theoretically combine. Orders went out, troops moved, and defenders began building positions according to sound military logic.

The coalition kept arriving too early.

At one road, two demonic companies nearly joined before Pyrelith destroyed the defensive structure meant to anchor them. At another, Marephoros pressure prevented an approaching formation from widening while Blue Sphere fixed the troops already present, forcing the reinforcements to fight from behind their own allies instead of beside them. Elsewhere, Umbrel killed enough communication officers that two groups approaching the same intended convergence chose different routes and arrived several streets apart.

None of those failures required the demons to behave foolishly.

They were trying to concentrate against an enemy that remained concentrated already.

The coalition did not need to wait for six separate formations to travel from six different districts before bringing overwhelming force to one intersection. Its strength was already moving together. Every minute the demons spent gathering was another minute the arrow traveled toward them.

Xuanyin saw the same pattern through the reports.

Markers representing attempted demonic concentrations appeared ahead of the main corridor, only to disappear or move backward before enough surrounding units reached them. The communication officers around her began recognizing the rhythm as well, no longer mistaking every reported gathering for the beginning of a major coordinated counterattack. Most were simply local commanders trying to build something before the coalition arrived.

One officer pointed toward a new cluster farther east. "Three units are moving toward this road."

Xuanyin studied the distances.

"How many are already there?"

"One."

"Then it isn't three units yet."

The officer understood.

Xuanyin moved the coalition marker forward. "Keep the arrow moving. If they manage to gather before we arrive, we deal with what's there. We do not slow down because of troops that might reach the same place later."

The order passed forward.

Haotian received it while crossing the remains of another broken defensive line.

He had already reached the same conclusion.

The Abyss possessed enough soldiers to make the stronghold dangerous.

It did not possess enough time to place all of those soldiers in front of the coalition at once.

That distinction was deciding the battle.

The arrow continued east.

Ahead, another powerful cultivation presence began moving toward it.

This one was too heavy to belong to an ordinary officer, and unlike the scattered companies attempting to gather around intersections, it advanced with a smaller cluster of elite presences moving deliberately around it.

Haotian felt the approach and kept walking.

The next Demon General was coming to meet the spearhead.

The approaching presence continued toward the coalition without changing direction. Haotian followed it through the Dao Palace of the Universe only far enough to understand the pattern of movement, resisting the temptation to push his perception through every defensive layer between them. The Demon General advanced with several powerful elites distributed around him rather than packed into one protective formation, while smaller groups moved ahead and to the sides as scouts. Whoever commanded that force had already learned enough from the western disaster to know that charging blindly toward the first report of fighting would be foolish.

The General did not know enough to turn away.

His information had improved compared with what the western General had possessed, but only in fragments. He knew that coalition forces had advanced far beyond the original western assembly district, that one Demon General had likely fallen, and that several internal communication positions no longer answered. He also knew that the coalition appeared to be driving east through the stronghold, which made the road ahead something he could still attempt to contest. What his reports had not conveyed was how much of the coalition's strength remained concentrated behind that advance.

The General had expected a major penetration force. He had prepared to encounter powerful cultivators, possibly Haotian himself, and enough mixed coalition formations to require his elites and local defenders to work together. That expectation was serious enough that he had not moved with ordinary confidence, yet it still assumed the army had spread through the districts it had already taken. The possibility that the strongest portion of the coalition remained compressed into one moving spearhead had not been supported clearly enough by the surviving reports.

His scouts reached the next intersection before the main group. Two remained on the surface, checking the broad eastern road and the military structures surrounding it, while others moved through elevated walkways and side passages to determine whether the coalition had already reached farther than expected. They did not find an empty approach. They found the edge of the arrow.

One scout returned immediately.

The Demon General stopped beneath a reinforced arch connecting two military buildings. "Report."

"The coalition is already past the eastern convergence," the scout answered. "Their leading formations are moving this way now."

"How wide?"

The scout hesitated.

The General's expression hardened. "Tell me what you saw."

"Several roads occupied together. Blue Sphere in the center, allied formations on both sides, and high-level cultivators near the front." The scout looked toward the distant fluctuations ahead before adding, "They are not spread out."

That final sentence mattered more than the rest.

The General extended his perception cautiously toward the coalition himself.

The first presences he encountered belonged to ordinary mixed formations advancing through several connected roads. Behind them came more, not fewer, layered deeply enough that the foremost teams could rotate without thinning the entire advance. Powerful cultivators appeared throughout that movement rather than isolated at distant positions. The General slowed further as his perception reached the arrowhead.

Haotian was there.

So were several presences already known through battlefield reports from the earlier war fronts.

Lianhua.

Yinxue.

Yueru.

Ziyue.

Xiangyin.

Shuyue.

Yanfei.

Tianlan's spear cultivation appeared farther to one side, accompanied by two powerful Frost Rainbow Falcons moving above the road. Additional Lesser Immortal Lord-level and high-level coalition cultivators occupied the spaces between them, while the mixed legions behind the spearhead stretched far enough that the General could not identify their end without pushing his perception deeper than the situation justified.

He withdrew his awareness.

One of his elites had already understood part of what he had seen. "That is the main body."

The General looked ahead without answering immediately.

The road he had intended to defend no longer separated him from one coalition formation.

It separated him from the strongest concentration in the invading army.

The western General's death became easier to understand.

Another elite shifted slightly toward the route behind them. "If we fall back now, we can warn the interior forces and build farther east."

The General considered it.

Retreating before contact would preserve his own strength and the elites around him. It would also abandon the sector entirely, leaving the coalition arrowhead another stretch of uncontested road through which it could continue accelerating before deeper forces finished gathering. The companies behind him were still approaching according to orders he had issued before seeing the true scale of the penetration, and turning now would expose many of them separately along the same routes the coalition had already been exploiting.

Worse, Haotian was already close enough that an immediate withdrawal might not become a clean retreat.

The General made his decision.

"We slow them here."

The elite who had suggested withdrawal looked at him. "For how long?"

"Long enough for the forces behind us to move away from this road and for central command to receive a clear report." The General pointed toward two cultivators carrying communication devices. "You two do not stay for the fight. Take separate routes and tell them the coalition's main strength is concentrated in one eastward drive."

The messengers acknowledged him.

"Tell them the western General's death was not an isolated defeat," he continued. "Haotian, his family, and the strongest coalition formations are moving together. Do not shorten that report."

The messengers left through different routes before the coalition appeared in visual range.

Haotian felt them separate from the General's group.

One moved toward an elevated road leading north-east. The other entered a narrower southern passage that would eventually connect with deeper command routes if it remained open. Their movements were too deliberate to belong to scouts returning toward local units. Haotian understood what they were carrying before any Umbrel cultivator near him needed to point it out.

He glanced toward the left side of the arrowhead.

An Umbrel elder followed his attention and extended perception toward the departing presences.

"Messengers," the elder said.

"Stop them if you can do it without pulling people away from the spearhead," Haotian replied. "If they get too far ahead, leave them. We keep moving."

The elder nodded.

Several Umbrel cultivators disappeared toward the side streets, while Celestara fighters above adjusted toward the elevated route. Neither group took enough people to weaken the main advance. The messengers mattered, but not enough to make the coalition abandon the strategy already preventing the Abyss from gathering.

The Demon General used the time to arrange what remained around him. His elites spread across the broad road and adjoining structures, leaving enough room that Haotian's family could not trap all of them inside one large technique. Ordinary demonic formations farther behind were ordered away from the center rather than brought forward to crowd around the General. The decision reduced the number of soldiers immediately available to him but preserved their ability to withdraw if the high-level clash became too destructive.

One officer questioned the arrangement. "We can reinforce the center."

"No," the General answered. "If you stand beside me, you die beside me. Hold the side roads and pull back when the coalition reaches you."

The officer understood.

That order told Haotian something important when the formation became visible ahead.

The next Demon General was not trying to recreate the western General's battle under different conditions. He had recognized the concentration before contact and was already limiting what could be lost around him. The demon intended to trade his own strength and that of his elites for time rather than pretend one local defense could reverse the entire invasion. It was the best decision available to someone who had encountered the arrowhead too late to avoid it cleanly.

The coalition continued forward.

No command was given to slow.

Blue Sphere formations remained in the center, Pyrelith maintained the destructive weight immediately behind the leading line, and the specialist forces stayed attached to the flanks instead of peeling outward toward every visible demonic position. Haotian's wives adjusted gradually as the powerful enemy presence became clearer. None raced ahead of the formations simply because another Demon General had appeared.

Tianlan remained farther to the right.

The two Frost Rainbow Falcons shifted their circles naturally as the road widened, one rising above the surrounding buildings while the other stayed low enough to watch the spaces between the spearhead and the elevated walkways. Tianlan looked once toward Haotian, saw that his father was continuing straight toward the General, and kept pace with the coalition rather than moving immediately to join him. The formation had not yet required everyone to collapse toward one target.

The Demon General came into view at the far end of the road.

He stood slightly ahead of his elites with a long dark halberd resting diagonally across his body, its blade broader than a normal spearhead but narrower than the western General's heavy sword. Abyssal cultivation moved around the weapon in controlled currents that followed the haft rather than gathering only at the blade. The distribution suggested a fighter who used the entire weapon rather than treating it merely as a delivery system for one large strike.

Haotian continued walking.

The General watched the coalition behind him before settling his attention on Haotian.

"You killed the western General."

It was not phrased as a question.

Haotian stopped only when enough distance remained between them for the ordinary cultivators nearest the road to adjust away from the likely first exchange. "Yes."

The General looked beyond him again. "The report did not say the entire army was still together."

"It isn't the entire army."

The demon's gaze returned to him.

Haotian added nothing else.

The statement was already enough.

If what stood behind Haotian was not even the full coalition, then whatever strength the General had perceived remained only the concentrated portion necessary for the main advance. Reserves, healers, logistics, rear security, and the formations maintaining the corridor still existed farther behind. The General understood that without Haotian explaining it.

His grip tightened around the halberd. "Then spreading you out was the only chance we had."

Haotian glanced once toward the side roads where several demonic units were already beginning to withdraw according to the General's instructions. "You waited too long."

The General did not argue.

The first messenger reached the northern elevated route.

Two Celestara cultivators intercepted him before he crossed the second walkway.

The messenger attacked immediately rather than attempting to bluff his way past them. Light and Shadow met the abyssal technique across the narrow bridge, forcing all three cultivators to fight while balancing above the street below. The messenger had been selected for speed rather than overwhelming strength, but he possessed enough cultivation to survive the first exchange and keep moving.

One Celestara fighter cut off the forward path.

The messenger turned toward the roof.

An Umbrel cultivator emerged from the shadow beneath the raised structure and struck before his feet settled.

The messenger twisted aside.

The blade missed the neck and opened the shoulder instead.

He continued moving.

The second messenger had better luck.

The southern route contained fewer elevated positions and several narrow passages through which the Umbrel pursuit could follow only in small numbers. He used that terrain correctly, releasing attacks behind himself whenever the shadows moved too close and refusing to stop long enough for a full engagement. One Umbrel cultivator fell back after taking a wound across the chest.

The team leader did not increase the pursuit.

Haotian's instruction had been clear.

The messenger disappeared deeper into the route.

The Umbrel team returned toward the spearhead.

One report might reach central command.

That did not change the road in front of them.

The Demon General raised his halberd.

His elites spread farther outward.

Haotian felt Lianhua, Yinxue, Yueru, Ziyue, Xiangyin, Yanfei, and Shuyue shifting within the arrowhead, each recognizing that the coming exchange would create openings and dangers across more than the center road. None stepped beside him yet. The General had not earned the attention of the entire spearhead merely by raising a weapon.

He moved first.

The halberd swept low rather than descending directly toward Haotian.

Abyssal force traveled along the entire haft and entered the blade only as the weapon completed the first half of its arc. The delayed concentration widened the threat without releasing it wastefully, allowing the General to force Haotian to choose between remaining near the center and giving up lateral space. Haotian used Cloud-Sundering Steps to move inside the outer edge.

The General expected it.

The rear end of the halberd came around.

Haotian lifted one forearm and redirected the haft rather than trying to stop the entire rotation.

The weapon slid past his shoulder.

The General stepped closer and drove a palm toward Haotian's chest.

Haotian answered.

"Seraph Shatter Palm."

Their palms collided.

The street fractured beneath them.

The General's halberd continued rotating through his other hand even as the palm exchange forced both men apart. He used the retreat created by Haotian's strike to restore the weapon's reach rather than fighting to remain close. The movement revealed the kind of discipline Haotian had expected from someone who had reached this level.

The General attacked again.

This time the halberd thrust directly toward Haotian's center.

Haotian shifted outside the point.

The blade changed direction.

The General twisted the haft through both hands and dragged the hooked rear edge toward Haotian's side, turning what had appeared to be a missed thrust into a trapping motion. Haotian used Thousand Mirage Steps before the weapon completed the correction.

The General tracked the first continuation and abandoned it when the rhythm broke.

He did not chase the false movement.

Instead, he drove the halberd into the paving and released abyssal force through the ground.

The road erupted across several possible paths at once.

Haotian used Heaven-Piercer Step to cross forward rather than retreat through them.

His fist reached the General before the demon expected the distance to disappear.

"Fist of Ruin."

The General rotated the halberd horizontally and caught the strike against the reinforced haft.

The weapon flexed.

He slid backward several paces but kept both hands on it.

Haotian followed.

A second elite entered from the side before he reached the General.

Lianhua intercepted him.

Her sword met the elite's weapon several meters away from Haotian's path, preventing the demon from turning the duel into a two-on-one exchange. The elite immediately realized who had stopped him and released enough cultivation to force a wider space around their battle. Lianhua remained inside that pressure.

"Voidpierce Sword Sutra."

Her blade cut through the first defensive layer.

Another elite moved toward Haotian from the opposite side.

Xiangyin's spear reached him first.

The demon raised a broad saber and blocked the thrust, but Xiangyin had already forced him to stop before he entered Haotian's exchange. Yanfei moved behind her, Frostfire beginning to gather around the space into which the elite would have to retreat if Xiangyin broke his guard. The Demon General saw the interventions happening around him.

He understood the difference between this battlefield and the western General's duel.

Haotian was in front of him.

The family was not somewhere else.

They were all close enough to interfere the moment any elite tried to change the balance around the center.

The General's next strike carried more power.

Haotian met the threat without giving ground.

"Dragon Vein Collapse."

His palm struck the halberd shaft instead of the General's body.

The technique traveled through the weapon toward the demon's arms, searching for the cultivation pathways feeding strength into the grip. The General sensed the intrusion quickly enough to release one hand and break part of the connection before the internal disruption reached deeper. He rotated away and kicked toward Haotian's abdomen.

Haotian caught the leg against his forearm.

The General used the contact to push himself farther back.

His halberd came up again.

Behind him, another elite tried to join.

Yinxue's sword cut across the route before he arrived.

Yueru moved toward a forming abyssal technique on the General's flank and severed one of its supporting relationships before the attack could reach Haotian. Ziyue widened the space around the arrowhead with a Sword arc that forced ordinary demonic soldiers farther away from the high-level fight. Shuyue remained among the nearest mixed formations, stabilizing the cultivators forced to operate beneath the General's killing intent rather than abandoning them simply to add another weapon to the center.

Tianlan continued closing from the eastern edge.

The Frost Rainbow Falcons changed their flight paths above him.

The Demon General saw all of it.

For the first time since the battle began, he gave ground without using the retreat to prepare another attack.

The coalition's strongest cultivators were beginning to converge.

And the General finally understood that slowing the arrowhead would require him to survive the point of the arrow itself.

The Demon General's retreat lasted only long enough to restore the halberd to its full reach. He planted his rear foot, drew the weapon across his body, and allowed abyssal cultivation to run through the entire haft before gathering near the blade. The pressure spreading from him forced several ordinary coalition cultivators farther from the center road, but the mixed formations did not collapse away from it. Shuyue's influence steadied them while their officers widened the local formation enough to give the higher-level battle room without breaking the arrowhead behind it.

Haotian continued forward before the General could choose another retreating angle. Cloud-Sundering Steps carried him toward the weapon side, forcing the demon to turn the halberd sooner than intended, while Thousand Mirage Steps disturbed the timing of the follow-up before the blade could settle onto one path. The General refused to chase the first false continuation and shortened his grip instead, bringing the middle of the haft across his body as a barrier. Haotian's fist met it before the weapon could fully stabilize.

"Fist of Ruin."

The reinforced haft bent beneath the impact. Abyssal cultivation surged through the weapon and prevented it from breaking, but the force still drove the General backward and disrupted the rotation he had intended to use for the next attack. Haotian remained inside the weapon's strongest range, forcing the demon to use the halberd more like a staff than a long battlefield weapon. The General responded correctly, driving the rear end toward Haotian's ribs while bringing one knee upward at the same time.

Haotian shifted his torso beyond the first strike and caught the knee against his forearm. The General twisted immediately, abandoning the failed knee and using Haotian's contact to pivot around him. The halberd's blade came down from the opposite side before the rotation finished. Haotian released the leg and moved clear as the edge split the paving where his shoulder had been.

The General gained three steps of distance.

That was all Lianhua allowed him.

She entered from his left without crossing directly between him and Haotian. Cloud-Sundering Steps carried her through the outer edge of the pressure surrounding the General, and her sword came forward as the halberd turned toward her. The Demon General shifted the weapon into a two-handed block, recognizing quickly enough that ignoring her to focus on Haotian would be impossible.

"Voidpierce Sword Sutra."

The sword met the halberd near the blade.

Space tightened along Lianhua's edge.

The General poured abyssal cultivation through the weapon and changed the angle before the spatial distortion could bite directly through the reinforced metal. The defense succeeded, but only by forcing him to rotate farther than he had intended. His left side opened toward Haotian.

Haotian stepped through.

"Seraph Shatter Palm."

The General released one hand from the halberd and raised a defensive palm. Their strikes met before Haotian reached the chest, and the collision drove the demon sideways instead of breaking through completely. Lianhua withdrew at the same moment so the redirected force did not carry the General into her. Haotian followed the movement rather than allowing the demon to reset.

The General's elites tried to close around him.

They never reached the center.

Xiangyin's spear intercepted the saber-bearing elite who had previously attempted to help from the flank. Her first thrust forced his blade across his body, the second followed before the weapon returned, and the third threatened the leg when he widened his stance to stop the point. The elite recognized that he could not simply overpower Xiangyin quickly enough to reach his General, so he tried to push her away with a broad release of abyssal force.

Yanfei entered the exchange before the pressure fully expanded.

"Frostfire."

Cold spread over the paving around the demon's forward leg while Fire gathered farther behind him, creating two different dangers instead of one large wave he could block directly. The elite shifted away from the frozen ground and found Xiangyin's spear already controlling the clearer path. He attempted to retreat through the heated side instead.

Yanfei changed the Frostfire with him.

She did not fill the entire road. The cold and heat moved according to where Xiangyin's spear forced the elite to step, making every safe direction temporary. The demon's saber remained dangerous enough to keep Xiangyin from rushing carelessly, but he no longer possessed the freedom to choose where the fight occurred.

Another elite attacked from the opposite side.

Yinxue met him first.

Her sword struck the layered defense he raised before the demon could reach the General, forcing the outer barrier to shift toward her. The elite attempted to preserve the inner structure and continue moving at the same time. Yinxue attacked the correction.

The second cut forced the demon to stop.

Yueru's sword crossed behind the first.

The elite reacted as though she were aiming for his exposed body and pulled more cultivation toward the threatened side. Yueru's strike passed instead through the point where that power connected to the defensive technique surrounding him. The structure weakened immediately.

Yinxue entered the failure.

The elite had no choice but to fight both of them.

Ziyue remained farther from the center because the crowded high-level exchange did not give Tenfold Elements enough room to spread safely. She watched the General's movements and the routes his elites were trying to use instead of forcing herself into an opening that did not exist. When a group of demonic formation guards began moving toward the center to reinforce their commander, coalition cultivators widened around her without being told twice. Ziyue raised her sword.

"Dao of the Sword — Tenfold Elements, Severing Arc."

The attack crossed the formation guards before they reached the high-level battle. Metal hardened the severing edge against their first defenses, Lightning disrupted the active inscriptions gathering between them, and Wind carried the arc through the width of their formation. Fire entered the fractures opened by the attack while Ice followed against heated armor, forcing the group to defend itself instead of supporting the General. Blue Sphere and Pyrelith formations struck the damaged line immediately afterward.

The Demon General saw his support being cut away one section at a time. He drove the halberd toward Haotian's chest, changed it into a sweep when Haotian shifted, then shortened the movement again when Lianhua entered from the side. Every correction was technically sound. None gave him enough time to control the exchange.

Haotian stepped through the inside of the halberd and struck toward the General's torso.

"Dragon Vein Collapse."

The demon had seen the technique once already.

He broke contact before Haotian's palm landed cleanly, releasing one hand from the weapon and twisting his body away so that only the edge of Haotian's palm touched the armor. Even that brief contact allowed destructive force to enter the cultivation pathways beneath the surface. The General immediately redirected circulation away from the threatened channels.

He succeeded before the collapse spread.

The price was visible.

His next halberd movement slowed slightly as cultivation rerouted through less efficient pathways. The weakness would have meant little against one opponent if he had enough time to adjust. He did not.

Yueru disengaged from the elite she and Yinxue had trapped only long enough to turn her attention toward the General. Abyssal cultivation was gathering through the halberd again, feeding from the demon's altered circulation into a broad technique forming around the blade. The General clearly intended to create enough destructive space to force everyone away at once. Yueru did not attack him.

She attacked the forming technique.

Her sword passed through the convergence where several streams of abyssal energy entered the weapon.

The General felt the structure weaken.

He released the attack prematurely rather than allow the entire technique to collapse in his hands.

Dark force erupted from the halberd.

The release was powerful enough to tear through part of the road, but the incomplete structure spread unevenly instead of forming the controlled clearing attack he had intended. Haotian and Lianhua moved through different portions of the disturbance while nearby coalition cultivators raised defenses against the weaker edges. The General had created distance, but far less than he needed.

Tianlan entered the center for the first time.

He did not charge beside Haotian and attempt to compete for the same opening. His spear approached from farther right, forcing the Demon General to account for another reach while the halberd was still returning from the failed release. Tianlan lowered the point.

"Ninefold Thrust."

The first thrust struck the lower haft.

The General redirected it.

The second came higher before the weapon finished moving.

The third changed toward the forward leg.

The Demon General stepped back and turned the halberd vertically, using the entire length to cover more than one angle. Tianlan altered the sequence instead of repeatedly hammering the same defense.

The fourth thrust attacked the weapon hand.

The fifth passed toward the shoulder.

The sixth forced the General's elbows closer together as he brought the haft across his body.

Tianlan saw the opening appear and used the seventh thrust differently.

The spear did not aim at the General's chest.

It struck the halberd near the rear grip and drove the weapon sideways.

Haotian entered immediately.

"Fist of Ruin."

The General released one hand from the weapon and crossed his forearm over the chest.

The fist landed.

Abyssal protection shattered beneath the armor, and the Demon General was driven backward several paces before he caught himself. Tianlan did not continue advancing into Haotian's space. He recovered the spear and shifted toward another angle while the General tried to restore the halberd.

One Frost Rainbow Falcon descended from above.

The General saw it.

His halberd swept upward.

The Falcon opened its wings before reaching the blade and changed direction rather than committing to an attack that would place its body against the weapon. The maneuver still forced the General to raise the halberd farther than he wanted.

The second Falcon descended from the opposite side.

This one struck.

Its claws hit the General's shoulder armor and scraped across the protective cultivation surrounding him before the demon drove it away with a burst of force. The Falcon climbed immediately rather than remaining within reach. The attack caused little direct damage.

It had never needed to cause much.

Xiangyin's spear entered the opening beneath the raised halberd.

The Demon General twisted.

The point missed the center of his chest and cut across the ribs instead.

Yanfei followed.

"Frostfire."

Cold seized the armor around the wound before the General fully withdrew. He released abyssal cultivation outward to prevent the frost from penetrating deeper, and Fire arrived against the same section while his attention remained on the temperature change. The armor contracted and expanded beneath conflicting stresses.

A crack appeared.

The General tore himself away before Xiangyin could thrust through it.

His breathing had changed.

The western General had been allowed enough isolation for Haotian to study, exchange, and eventually enter the full sequence of the Demon God Killing Martial Arts. This General had no such space. Every time he answered Haotian, someone else attacked the consequence of that answer.

Lianhua did not need to overpower his halberd because Tianlan could move it.

Tianlan did not need to pierce the General because Haotian could use the opening.

Yanfei did not need to destroy the armor because Xiangyin had already damaged it.

Yueru did not need to overpower the General's techniques because she could sever them before completion.

The Demon General understood it now.

He forced the halberd through a broad circle and released enough cultivation that even the strongest cultivators around him were required to move. The weapon's entire length became part of the attack, abyssal force expanding through the rotating haft and blade until approaching from any one side became dangerous. Haotian shifted beyond the strongest portion rather than contesting it.

The family gave the technique room.

The General completed the rotation and immediately moved toward the eastern road.

He had stopped trying to slow the arrow.

He was trying to escape it.

"Hold them!" he shouted toward his remaining elites.

The order came too late.

Lianhua's opponent was already dead.

Yinxue and Yueru had driven another elite into a defense so damaged that the mixed Sword formation surrounding them had begun closing from behind. Xiangyin and Yanfei's opponent remained alive, but he was several streets away from any position from which he could protect the General. The formation guards Ziyue had attacked were fighting for their own survival against Blue Sphere and Pyrelith cultivators.

No one remained close enough to create the space he required.

Haotian followed.

Cloud-Sundering Steps carried him through the path left by the General's rotation. Thousand Mirage Steps disturbed the demon's attempt to track which side Haotian intended to use, while Heaven-Piercer Step erased the remaining separation before the General could accelerate into the eastern road. The halberd turned back toward him.

Haotian did not stop.

"Seraph Shatter Palm."

His palm struck the haft.

The General's weapon shifted.

Lianhua appeared on the opposite side.

"Voidpierce Sword Sutra."

The spatial edge cut into the defensive cultivation around the General's shoulder.

He turned away.

Yueru had already identified the circulation gathering around the halberd for another clearing technique.

Her sword moved.

The forming attack failed.

The General abandoned it and kicked toward Haotian.

Haotian caught the leg.

Xiangyin arrived.

Her spear thrust toward the General's center.

The demon twisted his body in Haotian's grip and used the captured leg to pull himself away from the point. The spear passed close enough to tear open the damaged armor along his ribs. Haotian released the leg before the General could use it to drag him off balance.

Yanfei's Frostfire entered the wound.

The General roared and released abyssal cultivation through his body.

The cold stopped before reaching deeply into the flesh.

The Fire struck next.

His armor finally broke across the side.

The Demon General swung the halberd with one hand.

Tianlan's spear caught the rear of the weapon.

Rotating Spears redirected it far enough that the blade passed Haotian instead of entering his chest. Tianlan continued the rotation and drove the lower shaft toward the General's knee. The demon lifted his leg and avoided the strike.

The first Frost Rainbow Falcon struck his upper back.

He stumbled.

Haotian was already there.

"Dragon Vein Collapse."

This time the palm landed cleanly against the broken section of armor.

The General's cultivation convulsed.

He tried the same redirection that had saved him earlier, forcing energy away from the collapsing pathway before the damage could spread. The attempt succeeded along one route. It failed along another because Tianlan's repeated pressure, Yanfei's temperature changes, the partial Dragon Vein Collapse from earlier, and the constant defensive expenditures had already disrupted too much of his circulation.

One pathway collapsed.

A second followed.

The General coughed blood.

His halberd struck the ground as his right arm lost strength.

Haotian remained close.

The Demon General forced enough cultivation through his remaining channels to raise the weapon one final time. Lianhua shifted toward his exposed side, Yinxue and Yueru closed from farther back, and Xiangyin's spear remained positioned beyond the reach of the halberd. Tianlan and the two Falcons controlled the open routes above and to the east.

The demon looked around him.

For the first time, he saw the full geometry of the trap created by his own decision to stand against the arrowhead.

He was not surrounded because Haotian had brought a special formation solely to kill him.

He was surrounded because this was where the coalition's strength already was.

His elites had been unable to reach him because they had encountered Lesser Immortal Lords and coalition elites of their own. His ordinary soldiers could not mass around him because mixed legions were still driving east behind the high-level battle. Every direction contained another part of the same concentrated force.

The General tightened his weakening grip.

"So this is why he died."

Haotian understood whom he meant.

"Yes."

The demon glanced toward the road behind Haotian. Coalition formations were still passing through the ground the General had intended to hold, widening the captured corridor while specialists destroyed whatever systems remained useful to the Abyss. Even killing one or two people around him now would not restore the position. He had bought less time than he had hoped.

His attention returned to Haotian.

"Did either messenger get through?"

Haotian did not lie. "One may have."

The General exhaled.

"That will have to be enough."

He released everything still moving through his damaged cultivation pathways.

The pressure around him surged.

Haotian immediately recognized that the General no longer intended to preserve either his body or his ability to continue fighting afterward. Abyssal cultivation flooded through pathways already beginning to collapse, forcing strength through damaged meridians faster than they could safely carry it. Blood appeared beneath the armor before the final technique had fully formed.

"Back from the center," Haotian ordered.

The ordinary coalition cultivators nearest the high-level battle withdrew several steps.

His family did not.

They only adjusted their spacing.

The Demon General lifted the halberd above his head and drove the weapon downward.

Abyssal force spread outward through the road.

Haotian entered before the technique reached its full expansion.

The Dao of the Universe opened through his perception, revealing the unstable relationships feeding the release from the General's damaged circulation into the halberd. He touched one connection and shifted its balance.

The General forced more power through it.

Haotian changed another.

The technique staggered.

Yueru saw the forming weakness.

Her sword cut through the exposed convergence.

The General's clearing attack split into two uneven halves.

Ziyue attacked the larger.

"Dao of the Sword — Tenfold Elements, Severing Arc."

The elemental sword force tore through the destabilized abyssal release before it could spread toward the mixed formations.

Lianhua entered the remaining side.

"Voidpierce Sword Sutra."

Space tightened through the weakened attack and opened a path toward the General himself.

Xiangyin used it.

Her spear struck the halberd haft.

Tianlan struck from the opposite side.

The weapon left the General's hands.

Yanfei's Frostfire closed around the damaged armor.

Yinxue cut through the last defensive layer rising over his chest.

Haotian stepped into the center.

No elaborate sequence was necessary.

The General's circulation was already broken, his weapon was gone, his armor had been opened, and every attempt to build another defense had been dismantled by the people around Haotian. Using Sovereign Fang Collapse again would have accomplished nothing that a simpler established technique could not do with less expenditure. Creator's Banishment was even less necessary.

Haotian placed his palm against the General's exposed chest.

"Dragon Vein Collapse."

The technique entered through every damaged pathway at once.

The General's remaining circulation failed.

Abyssal cultivation surged once beneath the skin and then lost every stable route through which it could move. The force he had been gathering for another attack turned inward as the channels carrying it collapsed under their own pressure. His body stiffened.

The Demon General remained standing for one breath.

Then the halberd struck the paving beside him.

His knees followed.

Haotian stepped back as the demon fell forward onto the broken road.

No crater opened.

No enormous wave spread through the district.

The second Demon General simply stopped moving.

His powerful presence disappeared so quickly that many of the ordinary demonic cultivators farther away did not immediately understand what had happened. They had felt their General release his strongest pressure only moments earlier, followed by several overlapping coalition techniques. Then the presence holding the sector together vanished.

The entire high-level battle had lasted a fraction of the time required to kill the western General.

The reason stood around the body.

Haotian had not fought alone.

Lianhua lowered her sword and looked toward the eastern road rather than at the corpse. Yueru and Yinxue were already turning back toward the formations they had temporarily left, while Xiangyin pulled her spear free of the broken halberd and checked its point before moving toward Yanfei. Tianlan looked upward and found both Falcons still circling.

Shuyue remained with the mixed formations.

Ziyue's Sword cultivation settled as the remnants of Severing Arc disappeared.

Haotian looked east.

"Keep moving."

The arrowhead closed around the place where the General had fallen.

Mixed formations advanced past the body before the blood around it had finished spreading across the paving. Wounded cultivators were moved inward toward the protected corridor, fresh teams took the positions of those who had spent too much cultivation during the convergence, and specialists began examining whatever Abyss systems remained behind the General's failed defensive line. Anything useful to the defenders would be destroyed before the rear of the arrow passed.

The demon had succeeded in one thing.

One messenger might reach deeper command with a clearer report than anything the western sector had managed to send.

He had failed at everything else.

The arrow was still moving east.

The death of the second Demon General did not change the direction of the coalition immediately. The arrowhead continued east through the position he had failed to hold, allowing the mixed formations behind Haotian to pass the body before the surviving demonic troops fully understood that another General had fallen. Wounded cultivators were rotated inward, fresh teams moved into the foremost ranks, and specialists crossed the captured ground behind them to destroy whatever systems remained capable of supporting an Abyss counterattack. Within minutes, the place where the General had died became another damaged section of road inside the corridor rather than the center of the battle.

Haotian remained near the front while the formation closed around the disruption left by the high-level fight. Lianhua, Yinxue, Yueru, Ziyue, Xiangyin, Shuyue, and Yanfei returned to their previous positions instead of remaining gathered around him, while Tianlan shifted back toward the eastern edge of the spearhead with the two Frost Rainbow Falcons above him. The coalition elites who had fought the General's escorts did the same, filling their assigned portions of the advance rather than turning one local victory into an excuse to reorganize the entire army. The strength of the arrow came from being able to absorb these clashes without losing its overall shape.

Behind the leading formations, support groups worked through the remains of the failed defensive position. The General's halberd was left where it had fallen until a formation specialist confirmed there was no active connection between the weapon and any larger Abyss system, while broken defensive structures were destroyed rather than studied in detail. Veridian cultivators checked the nearby underground approaches, and Umbrel teams searched only the routes capable of bringing enemies toward the rear. Once those threats were removed, even the specialists began returning toward the moving corridor.

Xuanyin watched the change from the command formation through a map that now looked very different from the one Haotian had provided before the assault. The western assembly district lay far behind the actual fighting, the first Demon General had died along one route already buried inside coalition-controlled ground, and the second had fallen closer to the eastern portion of the stronghold before any major Abyss concentration could assemble around him. The main body had advanced far enough that continuing straight indefinitely would eventually carry it into deeper defensive terrain where more surviving forces could begin converging from ahead. The coalition had gained the depth it needed.

Xuanyin traced the main corridor eastward with one finger, then followed the nearby roads clockwise across the map. The purpose of the original drive had never been to travel in a straight line until the army struck the opposite wall. It was to penetrate far enough into the stronghold that the defenders would commit forces toward the advancing point, then change the direction of the concentrated mass before those forces could complete their movement. The first turn could begin now.

A communication officer noticed her attention shift across the map. "Do we start widening the eastern front?"

Xuanyin shook her head. "No. The arrow stays together." She moved several lead markers gradually toward the south-eastern routes rather than spreading them across every road. "The front turns first. Everyone behind follows the same bend."

The officer studied the curve and understood what she meant. The leading legions would begin changing direction while the formations behind them continued east long enough to occupy the space already taken, causing the entire army to bend rather than pivot around one fixed point. That would preserve the depth of the arrowhead and keep the support corridor protected inside the turn. Nothing about the maneuver required thousands of cultivators to stop and rotate in place while the demons attacked them.

Xuanyin issued the first orders. "Lead formations take the next south-eastern road after the current intersection. Second line follows when the first clears enough space. Rear formations continue protecting the corridor until the curve reaches them." She looked toward another set of markers showing Umbrel and Veridian detachments farther from the main body. "Specialists finish what they're doing and return. No one uses the turn as an excuse to spread."

The instructions moved through the coalition faster than any equivalent change could move through the damaged Abyss command network. Communication relays within the army were still functioning, officers knew where the main body actually stood, and the formations receiving the orders were already accustomed to shifting around one another without dissolving their teams. The first change therefore appeared at the front before the demons farther east had any reason to expect it. The arrow began bending while most of the stronghold still believed it was driving straight.

Haotian received the order as he approached another major intersection. The road ahead continued east through a sequence of fortified military blocks, but the south-eastern route beyond the intersection opened toward a broader internal district that would begin carrying the coalition around the stronghold in the clockwise direction they had planned. He extended the Dao of the Universe through the nearby roads only far enough to confirm that no hidden concentration already occupied the turn. The routes held scattered defenders, retreating units, and several incomplete formations, but nothing capable of stopping the arrowhead from changing course.

He looked toward the leading Blue Sphere officer. "We take the south-eastern road."

The officer glanced toward the straight eastern approach, where distant cultivation fluctuations suggested more demons were moving into position. "They're gathering ahead."

"That's why we turn now."

The officer understood.

The order spread across the front.

The first formations did not swing abruptly toward the new road. Blue Sphere cultivators at the center maintained forward pressure long enough to keep the demons directly ahead occupied, while the right side of the arrowhead began shifting gradually toward the south-eastern opening. Marephoros shaped movement around the intersection so the transition did not force neighboring teams into one another, and Celestara cultivators adjusted the airspace above the changing front before the ground formations fully entered the turn.

Tianlan moved with the outer edge of the curve. His spear group widened just enough to protect the exposed side while the first ranks changed direction, and the two Frost Rainbow Falcons altered their circles above the intersection without needing a spoken command. One remained farther outward where any demonic force approaching from the straight eastern road would become visible early, while the other tracked the south-eastern route ahead. Their movement made the turn feel continuous rather than like an army abandoning one front to create another.

Lianhua and Yinxue shifted with the Sword formations along the inner portion of the bend. Yueru and Ziyue remained far enough apart that one could break techniques threatening the transition while the other retained room for broader Sword pressure if a formation attempted to exploit the compressed geometry of the turn. Xiangyin and Yanfei moved near the center, ready to punish any demon that tried driving into the changing formation before the next ranks settled. Shuyue remained among the mixed teams where uncertainty during the maneuver could otherwise turn into unnecessary hesitation.

The demons directly east saw the change too late to exploit it properly. Several units had been moving toward the road ahead under orders to reinforce what they believed would become the next defensive convergence, and their officers could now see coalition formations beginning to disappear toward the south-east instead of continuing into the position being prepared for them. One company accelerated in an attempt to strike the turning flank before the coalition completed the bend. It encountered Blue Sphere cultivators who had deliberately remained in place long enough to cover the transition.

The clash lasted only long enough to prove that the eastern company could not force its way through before the next coalition ranks arrived. Pyrelith cultivators shifted behind the holding line, and the demons recognized the danger before committing their entire company into another compressed fight. Their commander ordered a withdrawal toward the defensive position farther east. By the time he reached it, the coalition's main body was already curving away.

Another demonic unit received the opposite problem. It had been marching from the south toward the same eastern convergence and now found the coalition arrowhead turning directly toward its route. The officers tried to widen into a defensive line before contact, but the first formations of the coalition reached them before enough space opened. What should have been a reinforcement approaching the flank became the next obstacle directly in front of the arrow.

Haotian did not need to stop for a prolonged battle. He moved with the spearhead while the mixed formations behind him crashed into the incomplete demonic line and broke its attempt to settle across the south-eastern road. Lianhua and Yinxue cut open the strongest defensive points, while Xiangyin drove through one officer who tried to stabilize the center. The remaining demons were pushed aside or forced backward before their original destination farther east ever mattered.

The arrow continued curving.

Behind the first ranks, the second line entered the same turn. The third followed after enough space opened. What had initially looked like one localized change at the spearhead gradually propagated backward through thousands of cultivators until the entire main body began bending clockwise through the stronghold.

The corridor behind them changed shape with it. Support groups did not abandon the protected route to take the shortest path toward the new front, because doing so would expose healers and supplies across unsecured streets. They followed the curve created by the combat formations, maintaining one continuous protected interior that still connected back through the western districts toward the Dao Palace of Creation. The arrow was turning, not breaking.

Xuanyin watched the maneuver spread across the map. Markers showing the eastern Abyss concentrations continued moving toward positions that were becoming less relevant with every update, because many of those troops had received orders before the coalition changed direction. Some commanders corrected when local scouts reported the turn. Others received no correction at all.

One communication officer pointed toward a large gathering farther east. "They're still reinforcing this point."

"Let them," Xuanyin replied.

Another report arrived from the southern routes. "Two demonic formations are moving north toward the bend."

Xuanyin examined their distances. "They may reach it. Mark them and keep the arrow moving. We do not change the entire turn because two formations guessed correctly."

The coalition's objective was not to avoid every enemy unit in the fortress. It was to prevent enough of them from gathering in one place to make their numerical strength meaningful. Two formations reaching the bend could be defeated by the concentrated arrowhead. Ten formations reaching the same point before the coalition arrived would create a very different battle.

That was why movement mattered more than empty territory.

The Abyss command structure struggled to understand what the turn meant. One surviving General farther east had already begun moving toward an interception point based upon reports describing the coalition's continued eastward penetration. The information was accurate when he received it. By the time his group neared the chosen position, another message arrived stating that the leading coalition formations had begun moving south-east.

He stopped at an internal junction and looked toward the road he had just spent precious time reaching.

"How far has the front turned?" he asked.

The messenger shook his head. "The report only says the lead formations changed direction."

"What about the rest of the army?"

"We don't know."

The General looked toward the eastern defensive concentration forming ahead of him. Several companies were already there, and more were still approaching according to the orders issued earlier. Abandoning them immediately might scatter the first meaningful concentration the Abyss had managed to create since the coalition entered the stronghold. Remaining could leave all of them standing in front of an enemy no longer coming toward them.

"Send scouts south," he ordered. "Do not move the main force until we know whether this is a flank or the entire army turning."

The order was reasonable.

It was also already behind the battle.

By the time those scouts reached positions from which they could observe the south-eastern roads, the second and third coalition lines were following the arrowhead through the same curve. What had looked at first like one flanking formation became clearly larger with every street they crossed. The scouts turned back with information that would take more time to travel.

The coalition kept moving while they carried it.

Haotian felt the distant Demon General's presence remain near the eastern concentration rather than immediately moving toward the bend. He could not know the exact debate occurring around that commander, but the delay itself told him enough. The demon did not yet know whether the turn represented one detachment or the main army. Every moment spent resolving that uncertainty widened the distance between the position he had chosen to defend and the coalition's actual path.

Haotian looked ahead along the clockwise route. The next districts were not empty, and the stronghold still contained more soldiers, more officers, more Demon Generals, and deeper defensive structures than anything the coalition had crossed so far. None of that changed the immediate advantage. The demons were still trying to decide where the battle would happen after the coalition had already begun moving somewhere else.

The first full legions completed the curve behind him. Mixed teams settled naturally into the new direction, and the formations that had temporarily held the straight eastern road withdrew in sequence rather than allowing themselves to become an exposed tail. Pyrelith destroyed the last useful Abyss structures near the intersection before those teams left. Umbrel cultivators covered the withdrawal through the side passages and then disappeared back toward the moving body.

Within a short time, the intersection no longer represented a fork between east and south-east. It had become another point inside the coalition corridor. The arrowhead faced into the clockwise sweep, the legions behind it bent through the same path, and the rear continued feeding strength through the curve without losing contact.

Haotian moved at the front.

Behind him, the coalition followed.

Farther east, demonic formations were still gathering to stop an army that was no longer coming directly toward them.

The stronghold was trying to decide where the arrow would strike next.

The arrow was already turning.
