Chapter 168 - Chapter 168 : Dead Back To Life ? (Bonus Ch 1)

By the time Team 11 found the temple, the sun had already dipped low, its light thin and pale as it slid between broken pillars and cracked stone.

The place was old—ancient, even. Moss crept over shattered steps, and prayer seals long faded clung uselessly to the walls. Whatever sanctity this temple once held had been eaten away by time.

Though it was not like they were too observant of the ancient temple's condition. They had spent the entire day searching for the priestess. And it was hard.

Finding small clues, tracking and following leads was always a pain in the ass.

Karin was the first to slow, her hand lifting instinctively. "Wait," she said, brows knitting. "There's… something here. It's faint, but—"

She shivered.

"It's cold."

Sukuna almost rolled his eyes and took out a sweater from his Kamui while the others weren't watching, and tossed it to her.

'Ah..'

"Hmm tha— thank you." Karin replied with a bit of a blush.

They moved carefully inside. No one joked now. No bickering. Even Izumi's usual casual playing around stayed locked behind her teeth.

They found the body at the centre of the hall.

At first, none of them spoke.

She was young. Too young. Their age, in fact, which was indeed very young.

Small frame, dark robes torn and stiff with dried blood. Her hair was matted, face pale to the point of grey. For a heartbeat, they didn't recognise her at all.

"…She's our age," Kiyomi whispered.

Sukuna didn't answer. His gaze was fixed, unreadable. He knew the plot—barely, since it was a random movie—but he saw it, and he knew the plot just barely.

Though perhaps the reason why he remembered the plot at all was because this priestess here, she was the age of the main character, and she looked so much like Hinata.

But he said nothing. He wasn't supposed to know that.

Karin knelt, her senses flaring. Her breath hitched. "She's… she's dead. Completely. No pulse. No chakra flow."

Izumi crouched beside her, eyes dark. "Then this is her. The priestess."

Without a reference, it was not possible to know for sure.

Sukuna's eyes narrowed, brain overclocking to figure out what could have caused this. He recalled that this particular movie where the priestess Shion appeared was in the Shippuden timeline. This was supposed to happen three years down the line if it would happen at all, since you never know what's canon in the case of Naruto.

'Someone targeted her, and this wouldn't be like what happened in the movie either.' Sukuna pursed his lips, pondering how his presence could have caused this—and coming up with no answer.

Slowly, recognition came, guided only by the description they had been given. The robes. The hair ornament. The place she had vanished from.

Silence pressed down on them. She matched the description and situation, at least.

"She's been dead for a while," Kiyomi said quietly. "The blood is dried. The body's cold."

Then Izumi stiffened.

"…Do you feel that?"

Sukuna nodded. "Yes."

Kiyomi's Sharingan flared to life. "Is that—" even her senses this time picked up the curse energy lingering around.

"Curse energy," Izumi finished, voice sharp. "It's lingering. Strong."

"Curse energy?" Karin blinked. What were they talking about?

Sukuna had two thoughts about smacking those two, but for now, he focused on the origin of this curse energy. He would handle Karin later.

'A curse user had been here. There is no doubt about it.' Sukuna was 100% sure.

And just as they were settling with that reality, something happened. The curse energy around them started to condense—around the corpse. Then the air shifted.

Sukuna's eyes snapped to the body.

So did Izumi's.

So did Kiyomi's.

The girl's chest… moved.

Sukuna's Mangekyo almost popped out at the sudden movement, his eyes glaring as hard as they could, checking whether he had mistaken that thump.

Once.

Karin sucked in a sharp breath. "No— that's not possible. I... I-I sense her death. This... is." Karin shuddered, unable to say the word caught in her throat... she wished to utter 'Ghost...' but just couldn't with how freaked out she was.

The movement came again. Shallow. Uneven.

Then, suddenly, the girl's eyes flew open.

"Whaaaaa—!" Karin screamed, completely freaked out.

The newly revived corpse shook. That scream startled her, and then she gasped, back arching violently as she sucked in air like she was drowning. A scream tore from her throat—raw, and utterly reactive.

Everyone moved at once.

"Easy! Easy!" Sukuna stepped forward. "It's okay—" He raised both hands in front of Karin and the back-to-life corpse.

"We didn't mean to—"

Before he could even finish, the corpse lunged at him.

Sukuna's reaction speed was faster, but still, that even freaked him out.

'Why the hell is she acting like a fucking zombie?' he almost let out that complaint.

Dark, twisted energy exploded from her body, slamming into the floor and cracking stone. Karin stumbled back with a yelp, barely catching herself.

This energy—it was chakra, but a different kind, exactly like Sukuna, Kiyomi, and Izumi. She had never seen this kind of chakra on anyone else besides them.

Kiyomi raised her arms, eyes wide. "She's using—"

"Damn, another one," Sukuna said sharply.

The priestess snarled, eyes unfocused, pupils trembling. "GET AWAY FROM ME!"

She struck again, movements jerky, unnatural, like she wasn't used to her own body—which might be just the case.

Kiyomi stared, shaken. "She was dead. And then, I saw the CE enter her body..."

"I know," Karin whispered, fear creeping into her voice. "And what the hell is CE?"

The curse energy surged wildly, unstable and wrong, filling the temple like a suffocating fog.

"For god's sake, calm down, will ya." Sukuna chided while still dodging the relentless attacks from the girl. The attacks themselves were immature, like she had never learned how to fight in her life, but the sheer CE reinforcement was making those attacks strong.

Not strong enough to hurt him, but definitely enough to put a normal man in the hospital.

For a moment, Sukuna expected the girl to continue thrashing like a broken marionette—but she didn't.

Her movements sharpened in between the random attacks.

If earlier was her going wild, now she was solely attacking Sukuna. Like the other three girls didn't even register in her eyes.

"…You," she said, voice hoarse but clear.

Karin blinked. "Uh. Why is she glaring at you?"

Sukuna frowned. "I'll ask once she stops attacking and let you know..."

The girl lunged again, curse energy flaring around her. Sukuna sidestepped, letting the blow crash into a pillar behind him.

She stopped, breathing hard.

'Finally!'

"You okay now, can we s—" Sukuna was saying, but before that, the girl spoke first.

"That energy… it's you, isn't it," she spat the words, almost like she was disgusted.

"Seems like another one of your admirers," Izumi added from the side. The situation was pretty clear—she was another revived curse user, apparently someone not so fond of Mr. I'm-not-bad-anymore.

Both Sukuna and the girl ignored her completely. The girl's eyes never left Sukuna.

"I'll kill you this time..." she growled.

Sukuna sighed. "That summarised my entire life so far honey, but see, I'm still standing here."

She didn't seem to like that cheek. "This time, I'll kill you."

Kiyomi blinked toward him. "I would like to see that."

"Sure you would." Sukuna rolled his eyes, now pondering how to stop this crazed girl. Was she even a girl? Or a man reincarnated in this body?

How the hell was this even happening? Why were sorcerers popping up all of a sudden in this world?

"I was hoping it wouldn't come up. Perhaps I offer a parley," Sukuna muttered.

She didn't seem to even register those words. Light gathered above her outstretched hand—not chakra, not quite curse energy either. Something purer.

Sukuna's eyes widened. "That technique—"

"Brace yourself..." Sukuna's mind immediately realised what was going to happen next and shouted.

The next second, a pillar of light descended.

It didn't burn.

It erased.

Curse energy vanished on contact. Izumi cried out as her legs gave way, collapsing like her strength had been unplugged. Kiyomi dropped beside her, Sharingan flickering uselessly before fading.

"W-what the... what did she do?"

Karin was faring better. The technique didn't affect her; instead, she just had temporary vision loss due to the flashbang effect.

"What the hell is her problem...!" she shouted irritably. No one likes a flash grenade to the face in a dimly lit place like this temple.

'Nothing, just some past actions coming to haunt me. Everything's cool.' Sukuna really wished to say, but of course he didn't. He stepped back as the light swept over him—

And passed through empty space.

'I love Kamui...' he whispered to himself, though he did wonder whether he would be affected like them if he were really hit.

The girl froze mid-cast.

"…What."

Sukuna reappeared a few steps away, brushing dust from his sleeve. "I'll admit, you almost had me. Five stars for effort."

Her eyes narrowed. "That should have worked."

"My reaction exactly when I wanted to turn into a rock or create a clone of me... unfortunately, not everything works in this world," Sukuna replied. "Long story. Very annoying."

"Short story, we can talk it over..."

The girl's confusion deepened, her certainty cracking. "You're Sukuna. I felt it. Why aren't you—"

"As I said, let's talk about it. Not like you can do anything about it since your technique wouldn't do shit to me." He shrugged.

She turned out to be the stubborn kind. She raised her hand again.

Sukuna held up a finger. "Before you do that again—and knock out my entire team—I would really like to talk."

She hesitated.

Only for a second.

That was enough.

"Karin," Sukuna said calmly, "chains. Now."

Karin yelped. "Wait, me?! I don't even know what's going on!"

"Grab the angry glowing girl, or we'll face another flash bomb," he clarified. "That's what's going on. Now do it..."

"OKAY OKAY—"

Chakra chains burst from Karin's back, snapping forward and wrapping around her arms, torso, and legs. She struggled, curse energy flaring uselessly against the sealing grip.

"What is this?" she demanded, using her technique to remove the chains—but the light did nothing to it.

"Chakra...," Sukuna said. "Very trendy around here. Don't worry, you'll adapt."

She glared at him, suspended midair by glowing chains.

"This isn't over," she said coldly. "I will kill you."

Sukuna smiled faintly. "Great. We'll schedule it after you stop trying to blind everyone in a thirty-meter radius."

Behind him, Izumi groaned weakly. "Next time," she muttered, "warn us when your ex is after your life."

Karin snapped her head faster than his Hiraishin. "WHATTTT!!!!"

"Next time we fight, I'm using my technique," Sukuna growled at Izumi.
