Sukuna had met many lunatics across his lifetimes (Sukuna's memories combined), but Angel had always stood out.
In his memory, she was a blade wrapped in righteousness, a woman who spoke of salvation while sharpening extermination into a holy duty.
And this was happening in a world where its entire power system originated from curses...
Where others feared him, worshipped him, or tried to kill him, Angel had been simple.
She wanted him dead. And not just wanted dead—she made it her entire destiny. If not, then she wouldn't be chasing after him even after multiple reincarnations.
And here she was again, almost reminding him of another couple who kept getting reincarnated in this world again and again just to kill each other.
And now she was once again twelve years old, stuffed into the body of a murdered shrine priestess (how fitting), and glaring at him like she wanted to finish unfinished business.
'Now how I'm gonna explain this one, I got no idea...' he grumbled to himself and ultimately turned to the only girl in there who had no idea what was going on.
Karin. Who was still staring at Izumi and Kiyomi lying flat on the floor like discarded dolls.
'Might as well take her out or I'll have another long-stretched explanation on my hands.' He grumbled and then glanced at her.
The moment their eyes met, Karin felt a sudden jolt of dizziness and sleepiness. The next second, she was falling down.
Sukuna caught her by the collar before she hit the ground and sighed. Red light flared briefly in his eye, and when he released her, she slumped into harmless unconsciousness.
Izumi blinked sluggishly. "Did you… just knock her out?"
"I'd rather not have to explain her why ancient murderers from another world coming back to life," Sukuna replied.
Angel watched all of this in silence, bound by Sukuna's curse technique reversal, her expression shifting rapidly between suspicion, irritation, and something dangerously close to disbelief.
"Let me go, you monster," she screamed. "If you're going to kill me, then go for it. Don't bother with all this nonsense." She pointed at her bound self.
"Nice to meet you as well," Sukuna rolled his eyes. "And yeah, I recognised you too, Angel."
Kiyomi groaned, sitting up with effort. "Can we please start explaining before it's night? I'd rather do all the fighting part before nightfall..."
Izumi pushed herself upright, rubbing her temples. "I hate that technique. What kind of technique was it..."
"Me neither. The technique eradicates all curse techniques and curse energy within its radius. It's useless in outright battle or anything besides purifying, actually—but a pain if you're a curse user," Sukuna grumbled.
"So you know her."
"Yeah..."
Angel ignored the girl, eyes locked on Sukuna. "You're not right. I felt you clearly. What's wrong with you? How come my technique didn't work on you?"
Even Izumi and Kiyomi were interested in knowing. Neither knew he had Kamui. And he wasn't going to let that part be revealed.
"Yeah," Sukuna said calmly. "You tend to find a counter if you experience it enough times." He shrugged.
She laughed sharply. "Liar."
"Oh come on, you know me enough to know I don't stoop so low to lie, ain't you, Angel," he said evenly.
That actually shut her up.
"And let's be honest, I'm not the person you remember anyway. At least not entirely. You know—New World, New Me.
If I were the Sukuna you remember, you would already be dead. And I would not be standing here negotiating while my team complains behind me."
Sukuna heard something the girls behind him grumbling, but he just ignored them.
Angel hesitated.
Just for a moment.
"I don't believe you..." she chided.
"Hmm, I guess I can fix that. You recall how binding vows work, right?" Sukuna smiled.
"Here we go again." Kiyomi rolled her eyes. Izumi sighed as well. This was going to be an exhausting explanation.
Angel just stared at them, uncertain how to answer. Binding vows were not something a sorcerer brought up so casually.
---<>---
After another game of three questions with the new member of the reincarnator club, here they stood.
"You were reincarnated. Same as me. Same as others. Someone killed the original owner of that body, and you woke up inside it."
Her brow furrowed. "…Shion."
"Yeah."
Izumi stiffened. "You know her name?"
"You tend to learn if you live here long enough..."
"I can argue with that..." Kiyomi added.
"If you're not a bum, wasting time playing an ordinary girl in a village packed full of ninja..."
"You..." Kiyomi's brows twitched.
Angel pursed her lips. The binding vow was in place—she knew everything he said had to be the truth. But still, believing anything coming out of Ryomen Sukuna's mouth was nothing less than suicide.
He only spoke curses.
However, she had to answer. She was obliged by the binding vow.
"The memories… they're there. Shrines. Seals. This land. Ninja villages." Her voice lowered.
She half explained to them and half convinced herself that what he said wasn't a lie.
"Yeah yeah... we know that. Come to the topic already."
Angel's irritation flared up, but she finally sighed, seeing not only him but the other two curse users also waiting for her answer.
Her shoulders sagged slightly, tension leaking out of her posture like a cracked dam. "I remember being afraid. Running. Praying."
She softened. "This little girl could see the future. Not clearly. Just… fragments."
'Okay... that matches with what I remember...' Sukuna internally nodded.
Angel swallowed. "She saw her own death."
'Explains the distress call...'
Izumi's fists clenched. "Who killed her?" Her instincts told her that this might lead her to the real killer of Izumi.
Angel shook her head slowly. "I don't know. The girl never saw the man before. Though by his talks, he was after Moryo."
"Moryo?" Kiyomi and Izumi didn't get it.
"An ancient spirit locked by the ancestors of this girl," Angel explained.
"He was after a spirit." Izumi narrowed her eyes.
"At least it felt like it, because as much as I remember, he could have killed her a long time ago, but he waited until bringing her here—the place where that spirit was sealed." Angel spoke, and this gave both Sukuna and Izumi a bad feeling.
The killer was after the spirit. But why?
She looked up at Sukuna.
"I don't remember much. The last I recall, I died in your hands back in the Culling Games, and then I opened my eyes here," Angel spoke...
"I told you, I wasn't exactly me... sigh. You're not gonna believe anyway..." Sukuna just shook his head and went back to his pondering.
"So," Kiyomi said carefully, "you woke up, tried to nuke him, and nearly flattened us. Any particular reason why you tried to take us down as well?"
Angel shot her a glare. "It was worth it. If taking him down meant killing or dying, then I would have done it."
"Wow," Izumi muttered. "Charming."
"Hana died because of you..." Angel spoke slowly, anger clear in her eyes.
"Dude, that wasn't me. How do I explain it? I used a binding vow. What else do you need?" Sukuna shot her a glare. More than this, he wasn't going to explain.
Angel just exhaled, long and slow. "If this truly isn't my world… if you truly aren't the Sukuna I hunted…" She looked conflicted, frustrated. "Then my purpose is… unclear."
Sukuna tilted his head. "Welcome to the reincarnation club, as I said. It's very inconvenient. But it's all we have."
"How come you remind me of that annoying Gojo brat," Izumi shot at him, suddenly recognising how his behaviour felt so familiar.
"Yeah! Now that you mention it, he sounds a lot like that idiot Gojo," Kiyomi nodded. For such a long time, she had a feeling she had seen this annoying behaviour before.
"What can I say, great minds think alike!" Sukuna shrugged.
"…Untie me," Angel said finally, having had enough of this chit-chat.
Kiyomi glanced at Sukuna. "You sure that's wise?"
Sukuna smiled faintly. "Don't worry. Besides flying with those pretty little wings of hers and erasing curse energy, she is practically harmless."
Angel shot him a glare while the other two thought only one thing: 'Harmless for you. Explain how you avoided that light and then talk...'
The chains loosened.
Angel really didn't attack.
"Do you know how to go back?" she finally asked.
"Nope... but for once, I'd like to find out as well. If anything, I'd like to know why long-dead sorcerers are coming back to life here in this world like this..." Sukuna said, serious for once.
"Oh, by the way... how did that killer look?" Sukuna asked.
"I—I don't know. He was wearing a mask."
"Mask again..." Whether it was Kiyomi, Izumi, or Sukuna, they all felt sudden irritation stir upon hearing this. This masked man was certainly a troublesome fellow.
