"Harry Potter- Ravenclaw"Chapter 161: Emotion as Fulcrum, Joy as the Bond
Beyond his role as Headmaster of Hogwarts, Dumbledore also served as Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards and Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot.
When he returned from Africa, a mountain of official business awaited him. During those days, Dumbledore was so busy, he resembled a student scrambling to finish their homework on the eve of term.
By the time he finally caught up, the mural copies he'd brought back from Africa had nearly faded from his memory—until his conversation with Wyzett in the hospital wing brought them back to mind.
"So, what did those murals actually reveal to us?" Dumbledore asked, his curiosity piqued.
He was genuinely fascinated by the contents of those ancient murals. After all, better safe than sorry—if he could master the methods depicted there, he might one day be able to help an Obscurial in need, and perhaps prevent tragedy.
Wyzett explained, "Mr. Scamander once told me that African wizards call the Obscurus the 'Curse of Resentment,' and the Obscurial is the 'host of the curse.'"
"An Obscurus is born when a young witch or wizard, capable of magic but harboring hatred for it, suppresses their magical talent. That suppression attracts the Obscurus."
"Hatred is a negative emotion. The murals actually describe a form of ancient ritual magic—essentially a Memory Charm ceremony—designed to deal with this."
"Compared to regular Memory Charms, casting one through ritual magic can greatly amplify its power, allowing it to strip away the Obscurus's hatred."
"An intriguing approach," Dumbledore praised. "Ancient wizarding wisdom is always worthy of respect—and study."
"Ritual magic is endlessly fascinating," Wyzett agreed. "To strip away hatred, the ritual requires a magical plant. Care to guess which one, Headmaster?"
Dumbledore interlaced his fingers, his tone playful. "Judging by your expression, it's a plant I'm familiar with... Mandrake root, perhaps?"
"Exactly, Headmaster." Wyzett nodded. "The cry of the Mandrake root serves as the medium, amplifying the ritual's effect and enabling the separation of the Obscurus."
"But this method has serious drawbacks. The murals make it clear that the Obscurial, once separated, becomes like a Squib—losing their magical ability entirely."
"And the older the Obscurial, the greater the risks—just like that Sudanese child Mr. Scamander mentioned..."
Dumbledore sighed, popping a Fizzing Whizzbee into his mouth. "A tragic outcome, indeed..."
Wyzett continued, "So, the murals also describe a second method: using 'love' as a guide to awaken the Obscurial, helping them break free from the Obscurus's grip."
"This approach has its own limitations," Dumbledore sighed again. "Once more, the older the person, the greater the uncertainty."
Wyzett nodded, his voice growing somber. "I suppose I was lucky—lucky to have your help and the support of so many professors."
A moment of silence settled between them.
Dumbledore slid a box of Chocolate Frogs across the table. "All of this is the result of your own efforts... I imagine your inspiration came from the method involving 'love,' didn't it?"
Wyzett exhaled, his tone brightening. "Yes, it involves the Patronus Charm—Professor Snape taught it to me."
Dumbledore nodded knowingly. "Severus, of course. His Patronus is quite unique."
"Expecto Patronum!" Wyzett raised his wand, tracing a circle in the air.
He deliberately kept the Patronus small—just a fist-sized ball of silver light.
Warmth radiated from the silver glow, filling the headmaster's office with a gentle comfort.
Dumbledore breathed out, feeling his entire being relax. Even Fawkes the phoenix seemed to stir, letting out a deep, melodious trill, his eyes shining with renewed energy.
Wyzett flicked his wand, sending the small silver light floating up, then drawing it back into his body.
"'Love' is a powerful force, but my situation with the Obscurus is a little different... It's more peaceful, and I can use the Patronus Charm to guide it."
A fist-sized silver light emerged from his chest, entwined with a wisp of pure black mist.
Black and white, like yin and yang, swirled around each other before slowly returning to the tip of Wyzett's wand.
"The first ritual, with its use of Memory Charms, also gave me a lot of inspiration..."
"If the Obscurus can be severed with a Memory Charm, then perhaps the counter-charm can be used to maintain the connection between Obscurial and Obscurus."
As he spoke, Wyzett adjusted his wand movements, casting the counter-charm for the Memory Charm. "Rennervate!"
A thin wisp of black mist separated out. Wyzett used Ancient Magic: Projectile Mastery, channeling ancient magical power to guide the mist and seal it within the amethyst crystal.
Inside the crystal, the black mist danced and flickered, as if a Mooncalf had found moonlight.
"Maintaining the connection with a Memory Charm?" Dumbledore grew even more intrigued. "What's the principle behind that?"
Wyzett explained, "It's a little trick I picked up from Professor Lockhart. Headmaster, you know what a seesaw is, right?"
Dumbledore nodded. "A delightful Muggle invention. I've tried it myself."
The answer made Wyzett blink in surprise, but then he recalled a note from Intermediate Transfiguration and found it oddly fitting.
He cleared his throat. "Both Memory Charms and their counter-charms work on the principle of a seesaw—the fulcrum is key."
"When you cast the counter-charm, if you can find an emotion that resonates, you can use it as the fulcrum to 'pry' open the forgotten memories."
He pointed at the black mist in the crystal. "As long as I don't complete the 'prying' step, the Obscurus won't be fully separated."
"I can use this emotion as a bond, resonating with the Obscurus and maintaining the connection."
"Lockhart seems to have inspired you quite a bit," Dumbledore remarked, stroking his beard with satisfaction.
Wyzett gave a noncommittal shrug. "He's a rather... unique professor."
"Very unique indeed..." Dumbledore smiled. "It's not easy to learn anything truly useful from him."
"I know several friends troubled by memory loss... Wyzett, do you think you could help them recover what they've lost?"
"Recover lost memories?" Wyzett blinked. "Did they lose them because of a Memory Charm?" 🔥 Want to read the next 50+ chapters RIGHT NOW?
