The change came sooner than anyone expected.
For most of the day after visiting the matriarchs, Kael had continued his routine as if nothing unusual was happening. He spoke with Borren at the forge, helped unload a cart of grain near the eastern barns, and even stopped to watch Charlisa and Lyra argue cheerfully over a flower vase colour.
But Charlisa noticed the small signs like
the pauses, the quiet moments when Kael rolled his shoulders as though trying to release tension beneath his skin.
And once, when he thought no one was looking, she saw him press his hand against the center of his back and close his eyes briefly.
The heat was getting stronger.
—
It was late afternoon when it finally happened.
The valley air had grown strangely still, the usual summer breeze fading into a heavy quiet that made even the leaves seem to listen. Charlisa was walking along the lower path when she saw Kael standing near the edge of the meadow.
His posture was rigid.
Not tense.
Frozen.
Something was wrong.
She quickened her pace.
"Kael?"
He didn't answer immediately.
When she reached him she saw why.
His wings were half-unfolded behind him, trembling.
Not from effort but from something deeper.
Kael inhaled slowly, his jaw tightening.
"It's starting," he said quietly.
Charlisa felt a cold ripple move through her chest.
"What do we do?"
"Shyra said not to resist it."
"That was before it looked like this."
Another tremor ran through the wings.
Kael bent slightly forward, one hand braced against his knee.
Charlisa stepped closer instantly.
"Does it hurt?"
"No."
He exhaled sharply.
"Just… intense."
The air around them shifted.
At first Charlisa thought it was wind.
But the grass remained still.
Instead it felt as though the valley itself was holding its breath.
Footsteps approached quickly behind them.
Shyra and Yelara emerged from the path near the tree line, moving with surprising speed for their age.
Borren followed a few steps behind.
Shyra took one look at Kael and nodded.
"It's time."
Kael straightened slowly.
The heat along his spine surged again, stronger than before.
His wings spread instinctively, stretching wide as though trying to catch balance.
The violet membranes shimmered under the afternoon light.
Charlisa had always thought they looked powerful.
Now they looked… fragile.
A faint glow began to appear along the thin veins of the wings.
At first it was subtle.
Then the light grew brighter.
Kael inhaled sharply.
The glow spread outward like frost forming on glass.
Charlisa stared in astonishment.
"What's happening?"
Yelara's voice remained calm.
"The body is letting go."
Kael's wings trembled violently.
Then the first fragment broke away.
Not flesh.
Not feather.
Light.
A tiny thread of violet light separated from the wing's edge and drifted upward into the air.
Charlisa's breath caught.
Another followed.
Then another.
Within seconds the entire membrane began dissolving into countless shimmering particles.
They lifted slowly into the sky like glowing dust carried by invisible currents.
Kael staggered slightly.
Charlisa grabbed his arm immediately.
"I've got you."
The wings continued dissolving.
The light fragments spiraled upward through the still air, catching sunlight as they rose.
Borren muttered something under his breath.
"I'll be damned."
Within moments the once powerful wings had almost entirely vanished.
Where they had attached to Kael's back, the skin shifted subtly.
The muscles beneath seemed to tighten, reorganizing themselves into a new balance.
The final fragments of violet light drifted upward.
Then they were gone.
The meadow fell silent again.
Kael stood very still.
Slowly he rolled his shoulders.
The movement looked… easier.
Lighter.
Charlisa helped him sit down on the grass.
"You okay?"
He took a slow breath.
Then another.
"Yes."
She studied his back carefully.
The wings were truly gone.
In their place faint silver lines now traced along his spine where the joints had once anchored.
Like delicate lightning frozen beneath the skin.
Kael flexed his shoulders experimentally.
"Well," he said quietly.
"That's new."
Borren approached, staring openly.
"You're not upset about losing flight?"
Kael tilted his head thoughtfully.
"I'll miss the view."
Yelara chuckled softly.
Shyra stepped forward and studied him closely.
"Stand."
Kael obeyed.
She watched the way he moved, the way his balance settled.
Then she nodded once.
"It's complete."
Charlisa looked between them.
"That's it?"
"For the physical change," Shyra replied.
Kael raised an eyebrow.
"There's more?"
Yelara smiled faintly.
"Oh yes."
Charlisa slipped her hand into his.
He squeezed it gently.
Shyra rested her staff against the ground.
"Today the sky released you," she said calmly.
"But what replaces it…"
Her eyes held a quiet spark of curiosity.
"…we will discover together in the future."
