Chapter 84 - Chapter 83— Something lost something gained

The valley returned to its usual rhythm faster than Charlisa expected.

By the next morning people were once again tending fields, hammering iron at Borren's forge, and carrying baskets between storehouses as if nothing extraordinary had happened.

But every now and then, someone's eyes lingered on Kael a little longer than usual.

Not with fear.

With quiet curiosity.

The story had already spread through the village, though no one spoke about it loudly.

Kael's wings were gone.

And something new had begun.

Charlisa found him that evening at the ridge above the valley.

It was one of the higher points overlooking Hetherglade, a place where wind moved freely and the entire settlement could be seen below like a living map.

He stood near the edge, hands resting loosely at his sides.

The sky had turned soft gold as the sun lowered toward the hills.

For a moment Charlisa simply watched him.

Kael had always carried himself with calm certainty.

Now there was something different in the way he stood.

Not weaker.

Just… adjusting.

She walked the rest of the way up the path.

"You picked a dramatic place to disappear to."

Kael glanced over his shoulder.

His expression softened when he saw her.

"I didn't disappear."

"You vanished without telling anyone."

"I assumed someone would find me eventually."

She stepped beside him and followed his gaze across the valley.

"Thinking?"

"A little."

"About the wings?"

He nodded slowly.

The breeze tugged gently at his shirt.

For a long moment neither of them spoke.

Then Kael said quietly,

"I spent most of my life flying."

Charlisa glanced at him.

"I know."

"It was… simple."

"How so?"

"If something troubled me," he said, "I could go up there."

He gestured toward the open sky.

"Everything looked smaller from above."

She understood immediately.

Perspective.

Distance.

Space to think.

"And now?" she asked gently.

He rolled his shoulders once.

The movement looked effortless, lighter than before.

"Now I suppose I'll have to solve problems without escaping them."

Charlisa smiled faintly.

"That sounds inconvenient."

"It is."

They stood together in comfortable silence for a while.

The wind shifted slightly, carrying the scent of distant pine trees.

Kael finally exhaled slowly.

"I thought I'd feel worse."

"About losing them?"

"Yes."

He looked down at his hands.

"But I don't."

"Why not?"

"I'm not sure yet."

He flexed his fingers thoughtfully.

"There's… something different now."

Charlisa tilted her head.

"Different how?"

He searched for the right words.

"Balanced."

The word surprised him as much as it surprised her.

"Shyra said that," Mira noted.

"I know."

Kael looked out toward the far hills again.

"Everything in my body feels… quieter."

"Quieter?"

"Like something that used to pull in two directions finally settled in one."

Charlisa considered that.

"Does it scare you?"

He thought about the question seriously.

"A little."

"Because you don't know what comes next?"

"Yes."

He smiled faintly.

"I prefer understanding things."

"Unfortunately," Charlisa said gently, "life rarely asks permission before changing."

Kael laughed softly.

"That is becoming increasingly clear."

She reached out and took his hand.

He didn't look at her right away.

But his fingers closed around hers instinctively.

"Are you worried?" she asked.

"About what?"

"Being different."

Kael shook his head.

"I was already different."

"That's true."

"If anything," he added, "this just made it official."

Charlisa laughed quietly.

The sun had nearly disappeared now, leaving streaks of orange and violet across the sky.

Kael studied the horizon thoughtfully.

"You know what the strangest part is?"

"What?"

He glanced upward.

"For the first time in years… I don't feel the urge to chase the sky."

Charlisa followed his gaze.

The open air stretched endlessly above them.

"And that bothers you?"

"No."

He paused.

"It surprises me."

Another quiet moment passed.

Then Kael squeezed her hand slightly.

"I may not understand what this change means yet," he said.

"But I have a feeling the valley does."

Charlisa looked down toward the distant village where lanterns were beginning to glow one by one.

"Do you trust it?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

The breeze moved gently around them.

Then he nodded once.

"I trust that whatever comes next…"

He glanced at her.

"…I won't be facing it alone."

Charlisa squeezed his hand back.

And above them, the evening sky stretched wide and silent — no longer something Kael needed to chase, but something he could simply watch.
