Chapter 400 - Chapter 399: What Kind of Battle Style Is This!?

From a type perspective, both Gengar and Dusknoir possessed the Ghost type, which meant they could both inflict massive damage on each other.

Some might find this surprising, thinking that battles between Pokémon of the same type should result in halved damage.

But in reality, battles between Ghost-type Pokémon are special. Like Dragon-types, they are the only two types in the entire roster that can deal double damage to their own kind!

Therefore, it seemed this would be a fair, yet intensely fierce battle.

However, unlike the single-type Dusknoir, Gengar also possessed the Poison type.

But Poison-type moves only deal half damage to Ghost-type Pokémon, rendering them largely ineffective. Besides, Gengar didn't really know any Poison-type moves, so this factor would have almost no impact on the battle.

As a Ghost-type gym leader, Morty was naturally aware of all these details, and he believed that the man before him was as well.

Come on, it's our third Pokémon each. Let's see whose is stronger!

On the field, Dusknoir and Gengar stared each other down. Around them, the battlefield was slightly messy after the two previous battles.

Dusknoir's single red eye flickered, revealing a hint of eeriness as its intangible aura locked onto Gengar.

Its opponent, Gengar, however, was currently picking its ear with a finger, as if completely unconcerned about the fight.

Seeing this, Morty first glanced at Gengar, then at Natsui behind it. His brow furrowed for a moment, then relaxed as a slight smile played on his lips.

Not only is the Pokémon being so careless, but its trainer isn't urging it on either...

Could it be that after winning two rounds, he's gotten overconfident? Does he think I'm some pushover he can easily handle?

This level of complacency won't do...

Dare to underestimate me, and I'll make you pay for your arrogance soon enough!

When the referee announced the start of the match, under Morty's command, Dusknoir launched the first attack!

As the Pokémon sent out last, this Dusknoir was naturally Morty's most trusted partner. Since the beginning of his journey, it had fought through countless challenges, helping him defeat numerous opponents on his way to becoming a gym leader.

He believed that even if an Elite Four member stood before him, this Dusknoir would not be outmatched!

Hmph, surely this man can't be stronger than the Elite Four, right!?

The first two rounds were just appetizers; losing to you was nothing. Come on! Now I'm serious! It's time to show you my true power!

Morty was brimming with confidence, but once the battle began, the situation took a turn that was somewhat out of his expectations.

Faced with Dusknoir's attacks, Gengar always managed to dodge and counterattack using very unconventional methods.

For instance, just now, Dusknoir used Shadow Sneak, stretching its shadow and moving within it, preparing to use this method to quickly appear behind Gengar and deliver a surprise attack.

But how did Gengar suddenly turn into a light bulb?!

The light bulb was extremely bright, radiating light in all directions, not only dispelling the shadow but also forcing Dusknoir out into the open!

And that wasn't all. When Dusknoir used Curse in an attempt to attack Gengar, to Morty's disbelief, Gengar conjured a pair of headphones out of thin air, put them on its head, and completely blocked out the sound of the curse!

Argh!

What kind of fighting style is this!?

What was especially absurd was that when Dusknoir used Will-O-Wisp, trying to burn Gengar, Gengar turned into a fire extinguisher!

As the fire extinguisher sprayed a large amount of white foam, the Will-O-Wisp was directly put out!

Is that even a Pokémon move!?

You've got to be kidding me!

This series of events left Morty somewhat dazed. He subconsciously rubbed his eyes, unable to believe what was happening before him!

Is this really a Pokémon battle?

Not some kind of magic trick!?

While Morty was in shock, Gengar, seeing that Dusknoir seemed to have run out of tricks and had nothing new to offer, let out a sinister laugh. With a few moves, it easily defeated Dusknoir.

Seeing Dusknoir fall to the field, Morty simply could not accept that his ace Pokémon had been defeated in such a manner!

"This... this..."

He opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but his mind was blank, and the words seemed to be stuck in his throat, unable to utter a single syllable!

Outside the field, seeing Dusknoir motionless, the referee glanced at Morty before raising his right hand and announcing the result of the match.

"Dusknoir is unable to battle! The winner is Gengar! The challenger is the final victor of this gym battle!"

Ignoring its fallen opponent, Gengar, like a triumphant general, held its head high and returned to Natsui's side.

When it got close, Natsui spread his hands in a rather helpless gesture.

"Hey, hey, you said you wanted to fight, that you wanted a long-overdue gym battle. I thought you were actually going to go move for move with it, for a thrilling, all-out fight! I didn't expect you to do it this way..."

This battle reminded Natsui of his first meeting with Gengar at Maiden's Peak; it had used similar methods to defeat Ash's Pokémon.

"Are you surprised?" Gengar laughed loudly. "There are many ways to defeat an opponent, don't limit yourself to just one style. Just tell me, did I win or not!"

Natsui: "..."

Is this about winning or losing?

Didn't you see you've made Morty question his own reality!?

Sighing helplessly, he was about to say something when he saw Morty approaching with a complicated expression on his face.

Natsui had seen that expression on too many faces before.

It was the look of someone who had been defeated by him, filled with too much unwillingness, helplessness, and regret.

"I lost, and it was a complete defeat. As for this match... well... how should I put it, it was truly an eye-opener. I've learned a lot."

Natsui didn't know how to comfort him and could only offer a dry laugh. "To be honest, I didn't expect this outcome either."

Morty took a shiny badge from his pocket and handed it to Natsui.

"This is my Fog Badge. Please take it."

Natsui took it and looked down. The badge was indigo and shaped like a ghost.

After thanking him, he placed the badge in his badge case.

In the time he had been in Johto, including this one, he had now obtained four badges. His journey was halfway over. Once he obtained the other four, he could challenge the Silver Conference.

He was about to say a few more words of thanks to Morty when Erika came walking over quickly from the side.

She first nodded politely to Morty, then pointed to the time on her watch and said to Natsui, "It's almost 10 o'clock. We should get going."

Natsui glanced down and saw that, without realizing it, the time had already reached 9:57!

He hadn't expected the battle to take so long. It seemed that arriving on time for Sakura's tea party was now impossible...
