Chapter 173 - CHAPTER 173

Ice and Fang

First Hall Left Corridor

The instant Tristan's toes brushed the polished white floor, his figure vanished.

A crack of displaced air followed

He reappeared behind Abarai Renji, leg already swinging downward.

Renji's eyes widened. He pivoted sharply, crossing both forearms before his chest.

BOOM.

The impact detonated like a cannon. Renji slid backward across the stone, boots carving twin trenches into the floor before he stabilized himself.

"…Faster than before," he muttered.

Tristan landed lightly, posture relaxed, heel scraping the ground as though disappointed.

His Reiatsu had risen noticeably. Not Espada-class but unquestionably captain-level in physical acceleration.

He had refined his Sonído to a near-flash-step sharpness.

"Draw your blade," Tristan said coolly. "Or you will die."

He launched upward, body twisting midair before dropping in a brutal axe-kick.

Renji flashed sideways with Shunpo.

The kick struck the ground

The corridor split open. A fissure ripped across the hall and shattered the far wall, debris collapsing in sheets.

Renji exhaled through his teeth.

"I don't enjoy fighting women," he said flatly.

An afterimage flashed

BOOM.

A kick struck Renji's ribs and launched him through the adjacent wall. Stone exploded outward as his body vanished into dust and rubble.

Tristan lowered his leg slowly.

"Are you certain," she asked, "that restraint is wise?"

Rukia's Battle

Across the chamber, more than a dozen glowing green sigils spiraled toward Kuchiki Rukia.

She leapt lightly into the air, robes fluttering as the sigils detonated below her.

Explosions tore open the marble floor. Smoke swallowed the space.

Taze extended his hand calmly.

"Again."

The symbols reassembled within the smoke, converging before erupting in a chain of compressed blasts.

When the smoke cleared

Rukia was gone.

A voice sounded behind him.

"Hadō #31… Shakkahō."

A scarlet sphere of condensed Kidō erupted toward Taze's back.

He turned, palm outstretched.

BOOM.

The Shakkahō burst against his hand in a flare of fire.

He did not move.

Not a single burn marked his skin.

"…Impressive," Rukia murmured, landing softly.

"My defense has been reinforced," Taze replied calmly. "You cannot wound me under these parameters."

He stepped forward

And vanished.

Rukia's instincts screamed. She pivoted, blade flashing upward

CLANG.

His fist collided with Sode no Shirayuki like forged steel. The impact rang sharply.

More sigils swarmed around her

but instead of detonating, frost began spreading outward.

The air temperature plummeted.

Ice formed midair.

Rukia lowered her blade, voice clear.

"First Dance… Tsukishiro."

A column of freezing light descended like moonlight itself.

Taze was engulfed.

Ice encased him instantly, crystallizing across his limbs and chest. The hall fell silent under frost.

Rukia exhaled slowly.

But then

Cracks.

The ice splintered.

Fragments shattered outward.

Taze stepped free, left shoulder now covered in hardened white armor, steam rising from his body.

"…If this were earlier, I would have died," he admitted.

Rukia's eyes narrowed.

He had altered his spiritual structure.

"My ability permits adaptive reinforcement," Taze explained evenly. "Defense. Strength. Thermal output. Limited environmental modulation."

Flames flickered faintly across his skin.

Rukia's breath frosted in the air.

"Then let us see how long adaptation lasts."

She raised her blade.

"Second Dance… Hakuren."

She stabbed the ground.

A torrent of white ice surged outward in a wide arc, expanding like a blooming glacier. Frost engulfed the hall, racing toward Taze in a tidal freeze.

For a moment

The flames and ice collided violently.

Steam erupted.

Then

The ice began melting.

Taze stepped forward through vapor, his arm expanding with reinforced musculature.

"Strength enhancement."

He reappeared before her.

So fast

Rukia barely raised her blade.

His arm swung downward like a hammer.

BOOM.

Ice shattered as his strike drove her toward the floor

but before it landed fully

A segmented blade whipped across the battlefield.

CRASH.

Zabimaru's extended fang smashed into Taze's torso, sending him hurtling across the chamber.

Renji stepped forward through the broken wall, blood at the corner of his mouth but grinning.

"I won't strike a woman," he said calmly. "Rukia. Switch."

Rukia nodded once.

Without hesitation, they crossed paths mid-stride.

Renji faced Taze.

Rukia faced Tristan.

Renji vs. Taze

Taze rose from the debris.

Not a mark on him.

Renji's expression hardened.

"Your defense isn't natural."

"No," Taze agreed. "It is conditional."

Renji tightened his grip.

Then I'll break the condition.

Reiatsu flared around him.

Rukia vs. Tristan

Tristan blurred forward again, heel slicing toward Rukia's head.

But as she entered range

Frost spread.

Her speed slowed.

Ice crept over her calf mid-strike.

Rukia pivoted smoothly.

Her blade cut across Tristan's torso

Ice erupted instantly.

Tristan froze mid-motion.

Rukia exhaled softly.

"My Zanpakutō does not simply freeze," she said quietly. "It lowers the temperature to the point of structural suspension."

Cracks formed

Then a white blur flashed.

Rukia barely raised her blade in time

A powerful kick struck her guard and launched her across the chamber.

She skidded along the floor before catching herself.

Across from her

Tristan stood upright.

Her boots and lower legs were now covered in sleek white armor.

"I adapted," Tristan said calmly.

She flexed her leg

Ice shattered harmlessly away.

"Your cold cannot restrain speed beyond my tolerance threshold."

Her Sonído ignited again.

The air shrieked.

Rukia's eyes sharpened.

Then I must lower it further.

Reiatsu began condensing around Sode no Shirayuki.

Temperature dropped again

This time, dangerously.

Across the chamber, Renji's Zabimaru coiled violently around Taze.

Spiritual pressure surged in every direction.

Las Noches trembled.

And deeper within its walls

Kurotsuki Renya felt it all.

The battle had begun in earnest.
