"Yeah. Let's go," she said softly, and Jake smiled.
"Give me two minutes," he said, brushing his fingers lightly against hers before stepping away. "Don't move."
Bella watched him walk off, her chest full and overflowing with something warm, sweet, and something she'd missed more than she admitted.
Jake returned quickly, keys in hand, hair slightly ruffled like he'd rushed because two minutes suddenly felt like too long to be away from her.
"Ready?" he asked.
Bella nodded, trying, and failing to hide the small smile tugging at her lips.
He opened the door for her, something he didn't always do, but tonight he did without even thinking. She slipped into the seat, the familiar scent of him lingering in the car: clean, warm, a hint of something woody that always made her chest tighten with memories she wasn't brave enough to revisit until now.
He got in on his side, started the engine, and the soft hum of the car wrapped around them.
