"That's a bit odd isn't it? Genetics typically don't work like that. Additionally muggleborns are a thing and none of their parents have magic so how do you explain them?" I asked with a frown.
"I don't know. It's a problem neither Albus or I could figure out. As you've said genetics simply don't work like that normally. For muggleborns that is even more difficult to explain. We theorized that the wizarding gene exists dormant in the majority of the population and the magical concentration gets passed from parent to child until it gathers enough to awaken the gene. We could never get conclusive data on it however as there's no way to identify the genetic carriers with a concentration high enough until after they have a child. Then it's too late as whatever they had was spent on the child." he said with a sigh.
"Have you considered attempting to extract whatever this concentration is to see if it might be artificially replicated? This way if the theory was true you could create supplements for wizarding families trying for multiple children that should allow the wizarding population to expand without relying on the new infusion from muggleborns." I suggested seriously.
"Magic is very versatile Alex but we can't know if we extracted the correct thing or even if it can be extracted at all if we can't even identify it. The theory we created was only done because we simply couldn't think of anything else that would explain it. Squibs are basically wizards who simply failed to express their magic. Like the genetic potential was there but some key ingredient hadn't been present during the time they needed it to be wizards and not something between muggle and wizard. It is vexing." he said with clear frustration.
"You said it should be roughly restored to the level needed after a decade correct?" I asked as I had an idea.
"Yes, we theorized that to be the case as most examples of successful second wizard offspring tended to be between five and ten years apart. With only a few exceptions." he said nodding.
"So when was the last time you had a child?" I asked seriously.
His mouth opened but he grew stiff as he picked up on what I was getting too.
"You think that if the concentration continuously accumulates between offspring than the longer the period the more obvious the concentration should be. If that were true Perenelle and I would likely have extremely dense concentrations. Ideal subjects to test for it in." he said looking at his own hand like it was some treasure.
"Magic is concentrated in the blood so perhaps to test this idea you would need to do an in depth analysis of the composition of your blood against another wizards as well as a muggles. This should in theory allow you to isolate whatever the substance is for a more in depth study." I say seriously.
"You might just be onto something. But which wizard would best serve this purpose? It would need to be one who just had a child." he said thoughtfully.
"I can't help you there. My number of contacts in the wizarding world are pitifully few." I say helplessly.
"Hmmm, no matter. I'll send out feelers and hope for the best. For now though I believe your time here with me is at it's end for the moment." he said changing the subject naturally.
"Are you kicking me out?" I asked surprised.
He chuckled with a smile "Nothing so cruel sounding. As I said before you have already learned the fundamentals of each field of alchemy. I will teach you no more on the subject lest I taint your own path with my perceptions of what it should be. If I am not teaching you then what purpose is there for you to linger here? So go, explore the world with the rest of the time you have this summer break." he said gently.
"Would have been nice to get a heads up before now. I don't have anything planned out." I say with a groan.
"Blame how fast you learn. I assumed that it would take at least the entirety of your break to go over the fundamentals for even one field of alchemy. Yet it has taken you only three weeks." he said with a shrug.
"Suffering from success is it? Fine. I'll figure something out." I said before heading for my room to grab my suitcase.
I stuffed it into my inventory once I had it and with a simple farewell set out of the Flammels home. I shot into the clouds and just chose a random direction to rush off into. I didn't have any actual idea what I was going but I also wasn't going to be spending my time in this world either.-
'Okay so still have over half the break left. What exactly should I do for four weeks?' I pondered as I zapped across the sky from cloud to cloud without any direction in mind.
I had already done Whitebeard and you couldn't pay me to go to the David's world for more than a few days at a time. Auron was currently stuck in the dream of Zanarkand so that was also out. Ruby's world would be interested and also a good way to acquire aura for myself and see how well it harmonizes with what I already have.-
'Yes, I think I know exactly how I am going to be spending my time.' I thought as I dropped to the ground before flashing away shortly after touching the ground to shake off any aurors that might pop up.
