Chapter 229 - Chapter 229: The Sweetness on the Battlefield

Three days passed in a flash, and Alex and C Company had been holding the position for three days.

During these three days, they repelled twelve alien attacks and even destroyed a device that the higher-ups called a 'Doomstalker' on the first day.

It was a behemoth, over ten meters tall, like a demon that had crawled out from the depths of hell.

Its massive Doomstalker cannon on its back could almost overturn an entire trench with a single shot, causing C Company heavy losses in the first engagement.

Alex still remembered the scene: C Company gathered all their heavy weapons, and the company executive even called for artillery support from the rear. Finally, at the last moment before it approached their position, they completely destroyed it.

When its enormous body fell, it was like a mountain collapsing, raising dust that blotted out the sky.

The sergeant said that this kill alone was worth a medal for C Company.

When Alex heard this, he just felt that one medal might not be enough, after all, that big guy looked almost identical to the 'big guy' behind their position, except it was thinner.

The 'big guy' behind the position was an Imperial Knight, which came to support them on their second day of holding the line.

That Knight was over ten meters tall, covered in heavy Power Armor, and a metal banner on its crotch was covered with its past honors, as if narrating its glorious battle achievements.

Its arrival boosted the morale of the entire position, as if a War God had descended.

Alex still remembered the scene when it first opened fire; its massive muzzle spewed scorching flames, instantly turning a group of charging aliens into ash.

Every step it took carried an unrivaled power, as if declaring the inviolable majesty of the Empire.

Alex had seen the pilot of that big guy, which made him feel that Imperial Knights were somewhat similar to the Sentinels in their regiment, but undoubtedly Imperial Knights were much larger.

Although Sentinel mechs were flexible, in front of an Imperial Knight, they were like toys.

Every step the Knight took was accompanied by a heavy roar, as if the earth itself trembled beneath its feet.

Alex had observed it up close and found its Power Armor covered in ancient crests and battle scars, as if every scratch told a legend.

He heard that the pilot was an Imperial noble, which made Alex somewhat disbelieving.

After all, before becoming Astra Militarum, Alex had also seen Imperial nobles, and he could only say that in his impression, Imperial nobles were all a bunch of fat, brainless worms.

They always wore luxurious clothes, looking down on commoners with arrogant eyes from their high positions, as if they were born superior.

To expect them to personally run to the front line to fight? Alex simply couldn't believe it.

But it must be said, the Imperial Knight pilot indeed looked very much like a high noble. Even when fighting on the front line, when the pilot didn't need to operate the Imperial Knight, he would set up a small table under his huge mech, then arrange a teapot and pastries, and enjoy an afternoon tea.

When Alex first saw this, he could hardly believe his eyes.

On the battlefield, amidst the roar of cannons and the smoke of war, the pilot seemed to be in another world, elegantly raising his teacup and sipping gently, as if the surrounding chaos had nothing to do with him.

Alex was fortunate enough to be 'bestowed' a biscuit by that pilot, a sweetness he felt he might never forget.

It was a brief moment of rest. Alex was squatting in the trench, checking his equipment, when he suddenly heard someone call his name.

He looked up and saw the pilot standing at the foot of the Imperial Knight, holding an exquisite biscuit, smiling and waving at him. Alex walked over somewhat awkwardly, and his fingers trembled slightly as he took the biscuit.

That was sweetness!

For Alex, who had only eaten proper food after joining the Astra Militarum, sweetness was truly a luxury.

He carefully took a bite, and instantly, the rich sweetness melted in his mouth, as if a warm current surged through his entire body.

He had never tasted anything so wonderful; it was as if the whole world brightened at that moment.

He even felt reluctant to finish it, carefully wrapping the remaining half of the biscuit and putting it into his pocket.

"How is it? Doesn't it taste good?" the pilot asked with a smile, a hint of teasing in his voice.

Alex nodded, stammering, "Yes... yes, sir. This is the best thing I've ever eaten."

The pilot smiled and patted his shoulder: "Keep up the good work, young man! When this battle is over, I'll treat you to some real good wine."

Alex nodded gratefully, but his heart was somewhat complex.

He had never imagined that he would have such close contact with an Imperial noble on the battlefield, nor had he expected this noble to be so approachable.

Perhaps, Imperial nobles were not all fat, brainless worms; at least this pilot showed him another side.

However, the brutality of the battle did not lessen because of this biscuit.

Ivan had already retreated to the rear. His arm was grazed by a Gauss ray, and Alex had cut off both his arms before his hands completely turned to ash, saving his life.

But Ivan, having lost both arms, could only retreat to the rear for treatment. Alex only hoped he would be lucky and that the Department of Military Affairs could give him two bionic limbs so he could return.

After all, the company now only had one-third of its men left, and there simply weren't enough people on the position.

Just as Alex was thinking this, a large group of people suddenly surged from the rear of the position.

Alex saw the men from E Company; after three days of rest, they were thrown back into this hellish battlefield.

It was clear that there was probably no one left in the rear.

Alex was not surprised by this. Since they landed, they hadn't received any reinforcements. After fighting for so long, half the regiment was lost here. Any troop replenishment could only mean that reinforcements had arrived.

Otherwise, the regimental headquarters would just have to send the rested units back.

Moreover, C Company was not able to retreat for rest but was integrated with E Company. The two companies would defend Position Four together to prevent insufficient defensive strength for a single company.

However, this time, not only E Company arrived at the position, but also a squad of Battle Sisters in Power Armor, a squad of Astartes, and an Inquisitor who looked very high-ranking at first glance.

The reason Alex knew he was high-ranking was because the Imperial Knight pilot behaved very humbly in front of him.

Just as Alex was wondering why a high-ranking dignitary would personally come to the front line, the ground in front of him split open, and a colossal entity so large that Alex felt like a mountain was moving emerged from underground, appearing on the horizon at the end of his sight, and began to charge towards them at an incredible speed.
