Chapter 128 - Stunned! Captain America Really Lifted Thor’s Hammer!

"Are you guys going to try that hammer again? Who's up this time?"

Inside the prison, the Red Guardian, who'd been locked up for decades and was practically itching for something to do, perked up immediately at the sound of commotion.

He came running over, looking all excited—even though they'd just come back from the hammer not long ago.

But who could blame him? After being stuck inside for that long, anyone would go stir-crazy.

Unfortunately, whether it was Nick Fury, Black Widow, Tony Stark, or Captain America, none of them felt like entertaining the talkative Red Guardian.

Even though Fury hadn't revealed the man's true identity, that heavy Russian accent of his was already suspicious enough to make everyone wary.

No one here was stupid—they could all tell that this guy's background was definitely not simple.

So they kept their distance.

Red Guardian didn't seem to care. He kept babbling on, as if he hadn't had anyone to talk to in decades.

Creaaak!

Under that tense atmosphere, two S.H.I.E.L.D. vehicles that had barely left earlier stopped once again near the crater.

Captain America, Black Widow, and the others got out. Under the watchful eyes of Coulson and the other agents, they approached Mjolnir—Thor's hammer—once more.

Captain America stood before it quietly, staring at the hammer with a calm, unreadable expression.

"Director, is the Captain the one trying this time?"

Coulson, ever the starstruck fanboy, immediately perked up. He couldn't hide the excitement in his voice.

Once Fury nodded, Coulson's confidence shot through the roof."If it's the Captain, then he'll definitely lift it!"

"Captain, do you need a moment to get into the mood?"

Seeing him still standing there, Black Widow shrugged and urged him forward.

Captain America took a deep breath, hesitated no more.

He didn't know why Fury was so sure he could lift it, but since he'd agreed, he wouldn't go back on his word.

He stepped forward—and reached out for Mjolnir.

"This is ridiculous."

"This whole thing is absurd!"

Thor couldn't stop shaking his head.

He honestly wondered what possessed him to come watch such a farce.

How could anyone else in the universe possibly lift his hammer?

It was a cosmic-level joke!

Of course, he himself couldn't lift it right now either…but that was only temporary!

Give him some time, and he'd reclaim Mjolnir for sure!

Around him, Fury, Black Widow, Tony Stark, and everyone else watched Captain America closely—all waiting for a miracle.

Whoosh!

With everyone's eyes on him, Captain America exhaled, tightened his grip—and gave a test pull.

Then—

He lifted it.

Just like that. Effortlessly.

That hammer that had refused to budge for anyone else, that made others strain till their faces turned red…

Captain America just… picked it up.

Yes.

He actually picked it up.

Not like in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he barely made it tremble—this time, he fully lifted it.

So the question was—why?

Same person, but such a huge difference between Age of Ultron and Endgame.

The films never gave a direct answer, but the screenwriters once explained:

In Age of Ultron, Cap's moral purity wasn't complete yet—because at that time, he was still hiding the truth about Tony Stark's parents' death.

That hidden guilt made him unworthy.

But now?

This version of Captain America had never even known that truth.

In his reality, Bucky Barnes had died seventy years ago—fallen off a mountain and never returned.

So there was no deceit, no betrayal, no moral blemish.

Naturally, he could lift Mjolnir with ease.

And not just lift it—it felt light.

Almost weightless in his hand—lighter even than his shield.

The balance, the grip—it felt perfect.

"He lifted it!"

"The Captain lifted it!!"

A wave of astonished gasps broke out among the nearby S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

Even though they'd all seen crazy things before, this was beyond belief.

"I knew it!"

Coulson was practically glowing with joy, his hero worship for the Captain deepening even further.

His idol could now wield the hammer of the gods!

Fury quietly let out a long breath.

Even with the diary's predictions, a man like him would never believe something fully without proof.

But now that he'd seen it with his own eye—he could finally relax.

"This is impossible…"

"How… how can this be?"

"Why is this happening?!"

Thor looked like he'd been struck by lightning.

He froze, wide-eyed, and for several seconds, no words came.

Then suddenly he shouted again, shaking his head in disbelief.

This couldn't be real!

How could his hammer—belonging to the God of Thunder—be lifted by a Midgardian mortal?

Why could he lift it… when Thor himself couldn't?

Why?!

"No!!!"

Thor fell to his knees, staring at the sky, roaring in anguish.

Another problem he just couldn't solve!

But he didn't know—this was only the beginning.

Captain America, holding Mjolnir, was equally astonished.

From the moment he grasped it, he could feel a strange, unexplainable connection—a living bond between himself and the hammer.

As if Mjolnir were not merely an object…

but alive.

He could almost hear a whisper—not a literal sound, but a call deep in his soul.

Without paying attention to Thor, Captain America followed that instinct—and gave it a try.

Crackle!

A surge of lightning exploded outward—startling every agent nearby.

The hammer… could actually summon lightning?!

Incredible!

Truly worthy of its legend!

"This guy really turned into Thor…"

Tony Stark muttered under his breath.

Even though the diary had spoiled this moment, seeing it happen with his own eyes was a completely different experience.

Even the proud genius himself had to admit—Captain America looked damn cool right now.

(Though of course, he'd never say that out loud.)

"This can't be real."

"This isn't possible!"

Thor was hit with yet another emotional nuke.

He just stared blankly, dazed, lost.

It was one thing for someone to lift the hammer—but to summon lightning too?!

Then what difference was there between him and Thor?!

So that ridiculous thing the diary described…had actually come true!

Father, what kind of curse did you put on this hammer?

Why would you do this to me?!

"Nooo!!"

Thor looked to the heavens and let out an even louder, more desperate roar.

Captain America turned, puzzled, to look at the thunder god having a meltdown.

What's with this guy?

Judging by Fury's earlier behavior, Cap figured this man must have some kind of special connection to the hammer.

But since Fury hadn't explained much, Cap didn't press it.

He simply placed Mjolnir back down.

Yes, it was a fascinating artifact—but that was all.

For him, it was just another duty completed.

"Is that enough?" he asked Fury.

"Good work, Captain."

Fury nodded, clearly pleased. "That's all for now. But I may need you to bring it back to base later."

Since Captain America could lift it, there was no way Fury would leave Mjolnir lying around unguarded.

Taking it back to S.H.I.E.L.D. was only logical.

Cap understood exactly what Fury was thinking.

And though he didn't like that kind of scheming behavior,he also knew leaving the hammer here wasn't safe either.

So he didn't argue.

"Natasha, your turn."

Fury's single eye turned toward Black Widow.

She glanced at the devastated Thor and hesitated. "Maybe… later?"

Honestly, with how broken Thor looked, she was afraid if she managed to lift it, he'd probably just drop dead on the spot.

"No. Now."

Fury shook his head. "Psychologically speaking, it's better to pile all the blows together. I'm sure that applies to gods too."

Besides—there was no guarantee she'd actually lift it.

The diary only mentioned that some versions of Black Widow could wield it.

Not this one.

So Fury only held a small hope—not much more.

"Alright then."

Black Widow didn't argue. She stepped forward and grasped the hammer.

Thor's heart skipped a beat, his breathing quickened.

He didn't even dare watch.

If she lifted it too… he'd never recover.

The others weren't as nervous as him, but they still watched closely, not daring to blink.

Captain America had done it—what about her?

Clack.

Under everyone's gaze, Black Widow tried to lift it—

but it didn't move an inch.

It felt like a mountain, impossible to shake.

She quickly let go and shrugged. "Guess I'm just an ordinary person after all."

Fury's face stayed calm, but inwardly, he was a bit disappointed.

If she could lift it too, that would've been perfect.

Cap might not be under his command, but Natasha was.

Still, he wasn't giving up.

She couldn't do it now—but who's to say she never could?

He'd make sure she got another chance someday.

Thor, meanwhile, finally exhaled in relief.

If she'd lifted it too, his heart might've given out right then and there.

"Thor," Fury said, "let's head back. I'm sure you've got a lot to say."

"Captain, I'll have to trouble you to bring the hammer."

With that, the group packed up and returned to the temporary base.

Mjolnir was secured under heavy guard—Coulson, Hawkeye, the Red Guardian, Captain America, and even Fury's secret Whiplash Unit, hidden in the shadows.

Even if Hydra already knew about the hammer, there was no way they could steal it.

Not only because of the defenses, but because no one else could lift it.

Fury felt quite reassured.

Back at the base, he immediately gathered Thor and Tony Stark together.

A small meeting between the holders of the mysterious diaries.

"I knew it," Tony said calmly, eyeing Thor. "You've got a diary too. The moment you stopped breathing mid-sentence, I was sure of it."

He'd seen it all earlier—when Thor tried to mention the diary on the way to the crater and suddenly choked up, as if an invisible hand gripped his throat.

The others might not get it—but Tony Stark did.
