Maya watched the final cut on her phone in the hospital break room, one hand over her mouth and the other still wrapped around a vending machine coffee that had gone cold twenty minutes ago.
The room smelled faintly of reheated pasta, sanitizer, and tired people. Two nurses argued quietly over who had stolen whose yogurt from the shared fridge. Someone's pager kept buzzing against the table.
Maya did not hear any of it.
On her screen, the video began with her own face in the hospital chapel.
She hated that face.
Too tired. Too open. Too much like a woman who had forgotten the internet existed before pressing record.
Her voice came in softly, singing Beautiful Things with the O2 crowd buried under the sound. Then the cut moved to London. Her hands shaking around the envelope. Her awkward laugh when Dayo told her to sit before her knees betrayed her. The short cover she sang while he played piano.
Then Luna entered.
Maya's chest tightened all over again.
