"DXD: Infinite Loot System"Chapter 285: You Know It Well Enough
Late night, Griselda's quarters, the church.
A shimmer of blue light flickered through the darkness. Water coalesced midair, swirling until it formed the outline of a woman—tall, regal, her gown the color of deep lakes.
Griselda's eyes snapped open. In a heartbeat, she stood between the intruder and the exit, every sense honed and ready.
Few in the church matched her skill. As Gabriel's Queen and one of the order's strongest exorcists, Griselda recognized the trespasser's presence instantly. Her gaze narrowed, fury simmering beneath her calm—someone had dared to infiltrate her sanctuary, her private room? Had these fools forgotten who they were dealing with?
But then she paused, studying the visitor.
"A spirit?" Griselda muttered.
The woman's aura was neither human, devil, nor youkai—pure, elemental magic. But the power radiating from her was overwhelming, far beyond any ordinary spirit. A monarch, perhaps?
The visitor smiled, silent. With a subtle gesture, she summoned a thick tome, placing it on Griselda's desk. Then, with another flash, her form dissolved into water and vanished.
Griselda waited, senses alert, then relaxed as she confirmed the spirit was truly gone. She wasn't afraid, but a battle here would have reduced the church to rubble. Better to avoid a fight, if possible.
Still, she frowned at the book left behind. Had the spirit come all this way just to deliver a tome?
Curious, Griselda approached. Her eyes landed on the cover—two bold words: "Holy Codex."
She couldn't help but scoff. The Lord's teachings were called the Bible. For this book to claim the title Holy Codex—what arrogance!
She raised her hand, magic swirling, ready to destroy it. But at the last moment, she hesitated.
Maybe she should see what it was before erasing it.
Letting the spell dissipate, Griselda picked up the book.
The instant her fingers touched the cover, a shiver ran through her body—a sensation she couldn't explain. Was it an illusion? Suddenly, the Holy Codex felt impossibly sacred.
Open it… open it…
Whispers seemed to echo in her mind. Griselda's breath quickened, her will wavering. She fought the urge, but temptation won out—she opened the book.
She didn't realize it yet, but in that moment, Sister Griselda had stepped into a devil's snare. There would be no turning back.
Morning, Kamiyo residence.
Under Akeno and the girls' watchful eyes, Tenra, Rias, and Ravel stepped into the teleportation circle.
After accepting Venelana's request the night before, Tenra was headed to see Sairaorg's mother. Whether he could help her, he'd find out soon enough.
A few transfers later, they boarded an Underworld sky train. After the attendants delivered pastries and withdrew, only Tenra, Rias, and Ravel remained in the plush compartment.
Rias glanced at Ravel, who was clinging to Tenra's arm. "Ravel, why are you coming with us?"
Ravel's cheeks flamed red. "Sister-in-law, I… I…"
She fidgeted, looking utterly flustered.
Rias blinked, thrown off. Had she accidentally asked something inappropriate?
Tenra stepped in, reassuring Ravel. "Rias, after we visit Sairaorg's mother, Ravel and I plan to return to the Phoenix estate."
"Home?" Rias's expression grew more perplexed. Even for a family visit, Ravel seemed unusually nervous.
Tenra hesitated, then decided to be honest. "Actually… we're going to tell my parents about our relationship. I plan to ask them to entrust Ravel to me—as my wife. You'd find out sooner or later, so I'd rather you hear it from me."
As expected, Rias stared at Tenra, stunned.
This guy—he really wouldn't spare anyone, not even his own sister!
For devils, sibling relationships weren't forbidden, especially for half-bloods like Tenra and Ravel. Still, it was a shock to Rias's sensibilities. She was so flustered, she couldn't speak for a long moment.
Tenra looked apologetic. "Sorry, Rias. It's all my fault. If you're angry, blame me."
Ravel tried to interject. "No, Onii-sama, it was me—"
Tenra tapped her gently on the head, cutting her off. "Ravel, this isn't your burden. I'll take responsibility. Just let me handle it."
Ravel's eyes shimmered—guilt and gratitude mingling.
Rias took a few deep breaths, finally regaining her composure. She stood, face unreadable.
"Ravel, come with me for a moment."
Ravel clung to Tenra's arm, frozen. "S-Sister-in-law…"
Rias's aura was intimidating, and Ravel was already feeling vulnerable. She didn't dare move.
Tenra stroked her forehead, smiling. "Go on, Ravel. It'll be fine."
Encouraged, Ravel bit her lip and finally followed Rias into the next compartment.
Inside, Ravel hung her head, voice barely above a whisper. "Sister-in-law, I… I…"
Rias's stern expression softened. She sighed, then gently brushed Ravel's hair aside.
"Ravel, tell me everything again. I want to hear it all."
"Mm…" Ravel nodded, voice trembling.
No one knew what passed between them. But after a long while, both girls returned to the main car.
Ravel's cheeks were still pink, but the tension had eased. Tenra could guess how things had gone.
He smiled at Rias. "So, you're not angry anymore?"
Rias rolled her eyes. "If I got mad every time you did something like this, I'd have died of frustration ages ago!"
She shot Tenra a glare, but her tone was more resigned than angry.
"Ravel's a good girl. You'd better treat her right. And you need to explain everything to Uncle and Aunt Phoenix. Also—"
She launched into a long list of instructions, making it clear she'd accepted Ravel. But before she could finish, Tenra pulled her into his arms.
"Hey—what are you doing? We're in public!"
Rias's cheeks reddened as she struggled.
Tenra leaned close, voice soft. "Rias, even when you pretend to be tough, you're adorable."
He hesitated, then whispered, "It might not be fair to you, but I have to say it—having a wife like you is the greatest luck of my life."
Rias's heart skipped. She stopped struggling, her strong gaze melting into something softer, almost mournful. Tears shimmered in her beautiful eyes.
"Hmph. Y-you… you know it well enough…"
