George clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned white. His eyes squeezed shut as though he were trying to block out reality itself.
At that moment, the granddaughter, still standing unnaturally still, turned her gaze toward Lana. Her lips parted, and a soft voice escaped.
"Thank you."
The next instant, her body collapsed onto the sofa with a dull thud.
George cried out in shock and rushed forward, catching her before she slid to the floor.
His shoulders trembled violently as sobs tore out of his chest. "I can't believe it… I can't believe she died like this…"
Tears streamed down his face as he looked up at Lana, desperation raw in his eyes.
"Is there a way?" His voice broke. "Can you resurrect her?"
Lana met his gaze, regret flickering briefly through her eyes. She shook her head slowly.
