After Amanda Waller facilitated the creation of Task X, Batman—Bruce Wayne—sat in Xu Fu's office with a grim expression.
By the time his patience was nearly exhausted, Xu Fu finally returned, dark circles heavy beneath his eyes.
He had spent the night with Diana. In truth, with his superhuman physique, even going without sleep for several days would have had no effect on him.
But fighting Diana consumed far more than physical strength.
As the saying goes, there are no poorly ploughed fields—only exhausted oxen. Unlike the utterly drained Xu Fu, Diana, who had ridden him relentlessly, looked radiant and was clearly eager for another round.
"Xu Fu, I've been waiting for you for a long time," Batman said after a few seconds, immediately understanding the situation.
After all, only men truly understand the pain and exhaustion of other men.
Xu Fu yawned."Bruce, did you want to ask me something?"
Batman nodded. Diana gestured toward the office door and asked lightly,"Four-three-three. Do you want me to step out?"
"No need, Diana. You might even be able to give me some advice," Batman replied.
Xu Fu and Diana sat side by side on the sofa opposite Batman, while the smart assistant brought over two cups of tea.
"It's like this," Batman began. "I've been having the same dream over and over recently. I heard you've been studying the occult, so I wanted your opinion."
"A dream?" Xu Fu immediately became interested. "Bruce, tell me first—what exactly did you dream about?"
"I keep dreaming about someone…"
"Who?"
"The Flash."
Before Batman could continue, Xu Fu sucked in a sharp breath, his mouth forming an exaggerated 'O,' his expression clearly saying I didn't expect you to be into that.
Batman pressed his lips together in despair, forcing himself to stay calm. He could not allow himself to be pushed into a corner."Xu Fu! What nonsense are you thinking? Listen to me!"
"Alright, go on," Xu Fu said, leaning back into the sofa and pricking up his ears.
"Ahem… In the dream, The Flash appeared inside a lightning sphere and told me… 'Lois is the key.' He said I was right about him. I felt awe… and fear…"
Xu Fu's expression changed instantly. He understood the meaning behind those words.
In a previous life, in one version of events, the Joker used fear toxin on Superman, causing him to kill the pregnant Lois Lane and triggering a doomsday catastrophe.
After accidentally killing his wife and unborn child, Superman completely fell into darkness and established a tyrannical regime, creating a so-called peaceful world.
It looked orderly—but it was built on murder and intimidation.
Diana shrugged casually."Bruce, you fought with Superman recently. That's probably why you had that dream. If you ask me, you're just arguing. Deep down, you care about each other."
Diana had always been a firm supporter of superhero shipping.
Xu Fu ignored her teasing. He stood up abruptly and walked to his desk."Cyborg, pull up the Phantom Zone. Is the Joker still there?"
The turning point of Superman's fall was always the Joker. If the Joker in this world truly intended to target Superman, Xu Fu would not hesitate to step in and kill him personally.
Cyborg complied, though he did not understand the reason behind the order.
"Avenger reporting: surveillance shows the Joker is still in the Phantom Zone, but he appears to be severely injured…"
Cyborg pulled up footage from several days earlier. The madman had tried to provoke Xing Haoran with schemes and manipulation, only to have his limbs broken and be left hanging at the entrance.
He likely would not survive much longer.
"Xu Fu, why suddenly check on the Joker?" Batman asked in a low voice.
Although Batman refused to kill the Joker, he had no intention of saving him either. Earth's prisons could not contain him, so exile to the Phantom Zone was the only solution.
Xu Fu shook his head."Nothing serious. Just a routine inspection. Cyborg, deploy a special drone to monitor him. If he dies, so be it."
"Understood," Cyborg replied, muttering to himself that fate could be cruel.(If you read violent novels, go to Feilu Novel Network!)
"Well… about this dream," Batman redirected the conversation. "It keeps repeating. It makes me uneasy."
"Could it be, like Diana said, that you've been—"
"No." Batman shook his head. "This is the first time I've had such a dream. I don't even know The Flash yet. And I clearly remember his last words: 'I think I ran to the wrong place, Bruce. I'll come back.' Could Barry's abilities include entering dreams?" he asked with a frown.
Xu Fu's expression grew even stranger."Barry can't enter dreams… but he can run into other times and places."
"Other times?" Batman shook his head. "Xu Fu, if you're telling me this is some kind of prophecy or mystical revelation, then be clear. What exactly does it mean?"
Xu Fu was certain this involved a parallel universe—but he had no way to explain that to Batman.
"In that case," Xu Fu said after a pause, "I'll have Cyborg perform a full physical and mental scan on you. If he can't find anything, we'll go to the Advanced Technology Laboratory and consult a specialist."
Xu Fu knew that while Kryptonian technology was advanced, they lacked experience with time travel. Dr. Harrison Wells of the Advanced Technology Lab, however, was actually a Reverse-Flash from the future.
He possessed extensive knowledge of time travel—his theories were more than a century ahead of the current world.
"…Alright," Batman said, shaking his head. "Let's hope I'm just being paranoid."
Around noon, Joan Moon returned to her boyfriend's residence at the Sky Eye Club.
Not long after they began dating, Colonel Rick Flagg had moved in. It felt more like surveillance than cohabitation.
After an intense and intimate exchange, Joan Moon gradually fell asleep. Colonel Rick Flagg exposed his toned upper body and reported the surveillance results to Amanda.
"Woman… witch…"
Joan Moon muttered in her sleep. The Phantom Witch was capable of influencing minds, and as the possession continued, Dr. Moon's spiritual world was gradually being overtaken.
Hearing his girlfriend mumbling and repeatedly chanting witchcraft incantations, Colonel Rick Flagg jolted upright. He grabbed the gun hidden beneath the pillow and aimed it at the person in bed.
As the word "witch" left her lips, Joan Moon's body darkened completely, transforming into the ancient Phantom Witch.
"What the f—," Colonel Rick Flagg knew the gun was useless. In a situation like this, Amanda had to be informed.
The Phantom Witch silently stared at the other woman. She tapped Amanda's phone and sneered, suddenly taking control of her "boyfriend's" mind.
When the call connected, Amanda asked coldly,"How's the situation, Colonel Rick Flagg?"
Rick Flagg clutched the earpiece tightly. Visions of marrying Joan Moon, having children, and living happily together flashed through his mind.
After a brief pause, his expression softened, and he smiled into the phone."Ma'am, I just wanted to report… everything is fine."
"Very good. Keep watching."
Trusting her subordinate—or rather, underestimating the Phantom Witch's power—Amanda gave it little thought. With Task X now officially authorized, she had other matters to attend to.
