Tuesday, November 3rd. 6:30 PM The Away Dressing Room, Allianz Arena, Munich.
UEFA Champions League. League Phase. Matchday 4.
Bayern Munich vs. West Bromwich Albion.
Defending a European title is much harder than winning it the first time.
Last season, West Brom came to Germany as newcomers. Now, they arrived as the clear Kings of Europe. In Munich, they take royalty seriously. The Allianz Arena glowed a bright red against the cold Bavarian night, a fortress defined by ruthless efficiency. Bayern Munich didn't just want to beat the English champions; they wanted to dominate them.
Ethan Matthews sat on the heated benches of the away dressing room, wrapping tape around his ankles.
He grabbed his phone from his bag.
Group Chat: The Eastfield Boys
Callum: I've watched their last five Bundesliga games. They play with a really high line, but they protect it by dropping their holding midfielder back between the center-backs to create a back three when they attack. If you just clear the ball down the wings, their full-backs will intercept it. You have to play it through the middle first. Draw their holding midfielder out of the backline, then pass it wide to Hayes and Kalu.
Mason: Good tactical insight, Cal. Crestwood managed a tough 0-0 draw on Saturday. League One is frigid right now. Listen, General. The Germans think they own this competition. They will try to physically push you off the pitch. Hit back harder. Lukas Keller knows what this stadium is about. Let him go.
Mia: The pub is full for a Tuesday night! Everyone's got a pint. Show them why you wear that gold patch on your sleeve, Eth!
Ethan: Play central to draw the holding mid, then hit the wings. Got it, Cal. And Mase, Keller has been staring at the wall for twenty minutes. I think he's ready. See you boys after.
Ethan locked his phone. Callum's growth into a true football analyst was a huge advantage. The strategy was clear, logical, and free of the convoluted theories that used to clutter the group chat.
Julian Vance walked in. He didn't look at the tactical board.
"When you wear the crown, every team treats the match like a cup final," Vance said, his voice quiet yet authoritative. "Bayern Munich does not accept that an English club holds their trophy. They want to humiliate you tonight and restore their world order."
Vance met Ethan's gaze, then turned to Lukas Keller. The German enforcer clenched his jaw so tightly that his muscles twitched.
"Don't let them control this match," Vance ordered. "If they want to press, break the press. If they want a physical fight, give them a Black Country welcome. Defend your crown."
8:00 PM. Kickoff.
The noise inside the Allianz Arena was a steady, pounding rhythm. The Bayern ultras behind the goal waved huge red flags, creating a wall of color and intimidation.
From the moment the referee blew the whistle, Bayern Munich launched a brutal physical attack. They pressed with a terrifying efficiency.
14th Minute.
The Bavarian pressure was overwhelming. Every time a West Brom player touched the ball, two massive red shirts were on them.
Liam Thorne tried to pass from the back, but the Bayern striker read it perfectly. He intercepted the ball just outside the penalty area, took a touch to set himself, and fired a powerful strike that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced in.
GOAL.
Bayern Munich 1 - 0 West Bromwich Albion.
The Allianz Arena erupted, the stadium announcer shouting the goalscorer's name while seventy thousand fans echoed it.
Ethan picked the ball out of the net. He didn't yell at Thorne. He just walked back to the center circle, his expression unreadable. They were hurt, but the game was far from over.
28th Minute.
Bayern sensed blood and pushed higher, looking to end the game in the first half.
Callum's tactical plan was Ethan's lifeline. Play it through the middle first. Draw the holding midfielder.
Ethan dropped deep, nearly sitting on top of his center-backs. Keller won a tough header in the midfield, directing the ball into Ethan's path.
Immediately, the Bayern press closed in. Ethan stayed calm. He took a heavy touch on purpose, baiting the trap.
Just as Callum had explained, Bayern's holding midfielder stepped out aggressively, eager to win the ball and launch a counter.
The moment the midfielder moved up, space behind him opened.
Ethan didn't try to dribble past him. He executed a perfect, disguised reverse pass, sending the ball through the gap left by the midfielder.
Armando fell back to collect the pass, dragging a center-back with him, and quickly flicked it to the left flank.
Tyler Hayes was already making a run.
The winger surged forward, leaving the Bayern right-back behind. He charged into the penalty area and struck a fierce, low cross toward the back post.
Jaden Kalu threw himself at the ball, sliding on the freezing German turf, and smashed it into the roof of the net.
GOAL.
Bayern Munich 1 - 1 West Bromwich Albion.
The small group of West Brom fans high up in the third tier celebrated wildly. Ethan jogged to the center circle, a cold, satisfied smile on his face. They had exposed a flaw in the Bavarian machine.
Halftime.
Bayern Munich 1 - 1 West Bromwich Albion.
The dressing room felt tense. Matching Bayern's intensity had taken a toll.
"They are furious that you broke their press," Vance told the team. "In the second half, they will try to turn this into a physical brawl. Lukas, Ethan. Control the center. Don't give them an inch."
The Second Half.
60th Minute.
The match turned into a heavyweight brawl. The technical skill of the Champions League gave way to hard tackles, aerial duels, and cynical fouls.
Lukas Keller was playing like a man possessed. Back in his home country, he threw his body in front of shots, took down Bayern's playmakers, and won every second ball.
Ethan played off Keller's efforts, picking up loose balls and controlling the tempo. He slowed the game to a crawl, draining the energy from the Allianz Arena.
78th Minute.
The home crowd's frustration was clear. Bayern dominated possession, but couldn't break through the solid defense of Thorne, Keller, and Ethan.
West Brom earned a rare free kick about thirty-five yards out, slightly to the left.
Ethan stood over the ball. The Bayern defense formed a massive wall, wary of a direct shot.
Ethan scanned the penalty area. He saw Keller near the penalty spot, being held by a large German center-back. Ethan locked eyes with him and nodded almost imperceptibly.
Ethan ran up to the ball. He didn't shoot. Instead, he sent a powerful, out-swinging cross into the heart of the penalty area.
Keller didn't try to leap over his marker. He used his strength to push the Bayern defender back a step, creating a small space.
Keller launched himself into the air, meeting the ball with a thunderous header.
The ball flew past the legendary Bayern goalkeeper like a missile, crashing into the top right corner.
GOAL.
Bayern Munich 1 - 2 West Bromwich Albion.
Silence fell over the Allianz Arena.
Lukas Keller let out a primal roar, sprinting toward the corner flag and sliding on his knees. Ethan was the first to reach him, tackling Keller to the ground as the rest of the team joined in.
89th Minute.
Bayern sent every player forward in a frantic assault. The noise reached a deafening level as they launched long balls into the West Brom penalty area.
Ethan dropped back to the defense, playing as a third center-back, heading away crosses, blocking shots, and sacrificing his body for the crown.
90+4 Minutes.
Whistle. Whistle. Whistle.
Full Time.
Bayern Munich 1 - 2 West Bromwich Albion.
The final whistle blew. They had entered one of the most intimidating stadiums in Europe, taken the initial blow, and survived the Bavarian machine.
Ethan pulled himself off the ground, his white away kit stained green and brown. He hugged Keller, who was still celebrating in his native German.
11:30 PM. The Team Hotel, Munich.
Ethan sat on his bed with an ice pack on his knee, feeling completely wiped out. Defending the Champions League title was turning out to be a tough, exhausting challenge.
He pulled out his phone.
Group Chat: The Eastfield Boys
Mason: KELLER! What a header! The guy went back to Germany and really showed them in their own stadium. And you, General, controlled the pace in the second half. They didn't know how to handle you.
Callum: The setup for the first goal was perfect, Eth. You held the ball just long enough to draw their holding midfielder completely out of position. It was great spatial awareness.
Mia: The pub went wild when Keller scored! What a huge win! Bring the boys home safely, Eth.
Ethan: Keller is a beast, Mase. I didn't even have to look for him on that free-kick; I knew he would win the header. Cal, your read on their holding mid saved us tonight.
Mason: You're defending the title well, mate. The other teams are still scared of the concrete. Rest up. The Premier League is waiting for Saturday.
Ethan locked his phone and leaned back against the pillows. Munich had thrown everything at the Kings of Europe, but they still held on to the crown. The Dictator of The Hawthorns closed his eyes, a cool, satisfied smile on his face. The target on their backs was huge, but so far, nobody had figured out how to hit it.
