Chapter 288 - Billionaire's Playground

Saturday, November 21st. 10:30 AM The Away Dressing Room, Stamford Bridge, London.

Premier League. Matchday 12.

Chelsea vs. West Bromwich Albion.

The air in West London always felt different. It was crisp and expensive, completely separate from the soot and steel of the Black Country. Stamford Bridge sat among the luxury apartments of Fulham, a playground for the wealthy where success was bought rather than earned.

Chelsea had spent nearly four hundred million pounds over the summer, completely revamping their midfield in a desperate effort to regain their status. They signed the captain of the French national team and a highly-rated Brazilian talent, creating a double pivot that cost more than West Brom's entire stadium.

Ethan Matthews sat in the plush away dressing room, carefully taping his wrists. The bruises from Munich had barely faded, but the Premier League schedule never let up.

He pulled out his phone.

Group Chat: The Eastfield Boys

Mason: I checked the betting lines this morning, General. The bookies have your player props at absurd odds today. They don't think you'll get a single assist against this new Chelsea midfield, and they have us at 3/1 underdogs to win. I've put twenty down on you to clear your pass completion prop in the first half alone. Take their money.

Callum: Don't let the price tags scare you, Eth. I've watched their last three matches. Their new double pivot is really talented on the ball but slow to turn. When they press, they leave big gaps in the half-channels. Drop Armando deep to pull their center-backs out, then exploit the space behind the pivot. Simple football.

Mia: The early kickoff means the pub is serving breakfast! We've got bacon sandwiches and pints ready. Smash them, Eth!

Ethan: I hope you get a good payout, Mase. The bookies clearly haven't been watching us. And Cal, I'll attack the half-spaces the second they turn their backs. See you boys in a few hours.

Ethan locked his phone, smiling slightly. Callum was keeping his word—no abstract stuff, just sharp and honest football scouting. Mason was right; the disrespect from the London oddsmakers was the only motivation Ethan needed.

Julian Vance entered the dressing room, impeccably dressed in a dark winter coat.

"They've built a new army," Vance said, his voice low. "They think throwing money at a problem will solve it. They look at our squad and see a bunch of cheap parts that overachieved."

Vance walked over to Lukas Keller, who was adjusting his shin pads, and then to Ethan.

"They don't understand that a team built through hard work can't be broken by money. When you step onto that pitch, don't look at their price tags. Look at their boots. Show them that the concrete in the Black Country is tougher than the gold in West London."

12:30 PM. Kickoff.

Stamford Bridge buzzed with the confident expectation of fans who believed their summer spending spree had solved all their issues.

From the first whistle, Chelsea's expensive midfield tried to take control. The Brazilian talent and the French captain passed the ball around with smooth touches, bypassing the initial West Brom press completely.

15th Minute.

Chelsea's French captain received the ball in the center. He took a heavy touch, looking up to send a cross-field pass.

Ethan didn't wait. He closed the distance quickly, diving into a clean, shoulder-to-shoulder challenge.

The hundred-million-pound midfielder went down hard.

Ethan stole the ball, taking one touch to set himself. He remembered Callum's report: Drop Armando deep, hit the half-spaces.

"Armando, here!" Ethan shouted.

The striker adjusted his run, dropping ten yards back and pulling the Chelsea center-back out of position.

The Brazilian rushed over to cover the hole, awkwardly turning his body.

It was exactly what Ethan had been waiting for. He slipped a sharp pass through the Brazilian's legs, straight into the half-channel space that had just opened up.

Tyler Hayes was already on the move. The Championship winger seized the pass, charged to the edge of the box, and took a fierce shot.

The Chelsea goalkeeper barely managed to deflect it onto the post. The ball bounced out, but it was clear: the expensive double pivot was very vulnerable when it came to turning.

34th Minute.

The Chelsea crowd began to grow restless. Their team had sixty percent possession but wasn't doing anything with it. Lukas Keller locked down the center of the pitch, forcing Chelsea to pass sideways and backward.

Ethan operated with total freedom. He was meeting his pass completion goals just as Mason had predicted and controlling the match's tempo.

He got the ball near the sideline. The Brazilian talent sprinted at him, eager to prove himself.

Ethan didn't panic. He casually faked a long pass down the line, freezing the Brazilian, before dragging the ball back with his foot and delivering a soft, chipped pass inside to Lucas Vega.

It was embarrassingly simple.

"Run!" Ethan shouted at Vega, pointing toward the Chelsea penalty area.

Vega charged forward into the final third. Chelsea's defense scrambled back. Vega laid it off to Jaden Kalu on the right wing.

Kalu struck the ball first time without taking a touch, sending a sweeping cross to the penalty spot.

Armando met it in the air, hanging for what felt like ages, and headed the ball past the helpless goalkeeper.

GOAL.

Chelsea 0 - 1 West Bromwich Albion.

The small section of three thousand West Brom fans in the Shed End erupted in joy.

Ethan jogged over to the corner flag, high-fiving Armando and Kalu. He glanced back at the center circle. Chelsea's two hundred million pounds worth of midfielders stood with hands on hips, arguing with each other.

Halftime.

Chelsea 0 - 1 West Bromwich Albion.

The away dressing room felt calm and collected.

"They're starting to argue," Vance noted, pointing to the whiteboard. "When a team is bought instead of built, they fall apart when faced with challenges. In the second half, they'll try to make plays on their own. They'll lose their shape. Let them make mistakes, and we'll take advantage."

The Second Half.

58th Minute.

Vance was spot on. The French captain, angry about being outplayed by a nineteen-year-old from Eastfield, stopped doing his defensive job. He began rushing forward, trying to score an equalizer himself.

Chelsea's structure collapsed.

66th Minute.

Chelsea mounted a frantic attack, their full-backs pushing too far forward. The French captain attempted a shot from twenty-five yards out, but Liam Thorne blocked it.

The ball rolled out to the edge of the penalty area.

Lukas Keller was first to reach it. The German didn't clear it into the stands. He played a quick, calm pass to Ethan, who awaited at the D.

The counter-attack began.

Ethan looked up. The entire Chelsea half was nearly empty. Tyler Hayes was sprinting down the left flank, wide open.

Ethan kept it simple. He wrapped his right foot around the ball and sent a stunning, fifty-yard driven pass that cut through the cold London air and fell right into Hayes' stride.

Hayes didn't even need to break his pace. He stormed into the Chelsea penalty area, isolating the goalkeeper, and calmly slid the ball into the bottom right corner.

GOAL.

Chelsea 0 - 2 West Bromwich Albion.

The away end was ecstatic.

Ethan walked back to the center circle, a cold, satisfied smile on his face. Two assists. The bookies had gotten it all wrong, and Mason would likely have a great afternoon at the pub.

82nd Minute.

Stamford Bridge quickly emptied. The billionaire owners in their luxury boxes looked stunned.

Chelsea brought on three expensive substitutes in a desperate attempt to save face, but the Black Country defense held firm. Keller won every tackle, Thorne dominated the air, and Ethan kept the ball with a casual, effortless control that drained the remaining energy from the Londoners.

90+4 Minutes.

Whistle. Whistle. Whistle.

Full Time.

Chelsea 0 - 2 West Bromwich Albion.

A thorough dismantling of one of the richest clubs in the world.

Ethan applauded the traveling fans, ignoring the jeers from the few remaining Chelsea supporters. The price tags meant nothing on the field.

4:00 PM. The Team Coach, M1 Motorway.

The heating was blasting on the coach as it traveled back north toward the Midlands. Ethan sat in his usual seat, sipping a recovery shake.

He pulled out his phone.

Group Chat: The Eastfield Boys

Mason: TWO ASSISTS! I told you! The bookies are absolutely crying right now, General. The drinks are on me tonight! You made that two-hundred-million-pound midfield look like a Sunday League pub team.

Callum: The counter-attack in the 66th minute was flawlessly executed. You took advantage of the exact weakness created by their captain abandoning his pivot duties. It was a perfect read of the game, Eth. Beautiful, simple football.

Mia: The pub went completely wild! Mason is buying everyone a round with his winnings. Safe journey home, Eth!

Ethan: Enjoy the payout, Mase. I told you we'd hit the half-spaces, Cal. They had all the talent in the world, but they didn't want to run back.

Mason: Money can't buy Eastfield grit. Three points in London. The title defense looks beautiful, mate.

Ethan locked his phone and rested his head against the window. The billionaires tried to buy the crown, but the Dictator of The Hawthorns reminded the whole country that true royalty in the Premier League was forged in the mud.
