The sun was too bright. That was Elias's first coherent thought. Too bright, too golden, too… intentional. Like God personally angled the sun to make his eyes squint unattractively as he sat on a ridiculously plush lounge chair beside the bluest pool water he'd ever seen.
"Stop frowning," Kenzie said without looking up from her drink. "You're creasing. You're going to age like a raisin."
Elias simply let out an unattractive grunt.
She tipped her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose and smirked. "Now answer the question."
"What question?"
Kenzie's grin sharpened. "Did you finally fuck him?"
Elias groaned so loudly a couple in the far corner looked over. He covered his face with both hands and mumbled, "Why do I hang out with you?"
"Because I'm your only friend, loser," she said sweetly, "and also because I provide great emotional support."
He dropped his hands. "No. We did not— you know." His voice cracked in the middle.
