"You're a mutant, aren't you?"
Willow froze. For a moment, her world tilted off balance. She took a step back, clutching her bag to her chest. "No…" she lied, her voice shaking.
The room lights flickered sharply, throwing shadows across the walls. Sylas's gaze flicked to the lights, then back to her.
"Calm down," he said quietly. "I'm not here to hurt you."
That made her tenser. Her pulse thundered in her ears as he shut the folder in his hand and started toward her.
"One more step," she warned, her voice trembling, "and I'm going to scream."
Sylas stopped. His eyes widened slightly then he chuckled, raising both hands in a slow gesture of surrender. "I'm your trainer, Willow. I'd never hurt you."
That didn't soothe her. If anything, it made her heart race faster. The lights kept flickering. Was she doing that? Was it reacting to her emotions? No, it must be electrical problems.
