Cassian's POV
I step out of her room, but I still carry her scent with me like it's part of the clothes I'm wearing.
I have doubts about her accepting me.
Maybe she does it because she feels she has no choice—because it seems like the best thing to do. Maybe she thinks she can benefit from protection.
But it's never that.
I turn back to face her door after about ten steps. Her scent becomes more distinct and easier for me to pick out even from a distance. I never think it'll be this way, but it's still the mate bond at play.
Or maybe it's not just the bond itself—it's her acceptance of it. It's like accepting the union of our souls as one. Her body feels like mine. So it's normal that I feel drawn to her.
"Elara." I take a step back toward her door.
What's the point of leaving in the first place?
Everything is going to take a turn.
And maybe things won't end well for me.
