How could she ask me that for sure?
Glaring into her eyes, I could see the confusion mixed with hope in them. That very look hollowed my heart so deeply that my wolf felt it too.
Her question dragged me back to what Alpha Nathan had said earlier, and guilt clawed its way through me.
What if he was right? What if she truly felt the bond? Was that why she asked? And what if I had just lied, said I was her mate, only to pull her closer to me? What would that make me?
I raked my fingers through my hair and exhaled heavily, torn between truth and desperation.
"Yes, I'm your mate," I replied, and to my chagrin, she looked completely stunned, her eyes widening.
"Alpha Enzo, you're my mate? Does that mean you were the one who mentioned it in the courtyard?"
I nodded once, though my wolf stirred uneasily inside me. His low growl echoed in my head, coiling tension around my spine. He didn't like this, and neither did I.
