Chapter 79 - Prelude

After the Hulk's escape, Meng Ran and Liu Xiu piloted their aircraft back to base.

Although possessing the Hulk had brought Meng Ran a terrifying surge in power, the drawbacks were just as clear—his control over his own strength had significantly weakened.

Once back at the base, Meng Ran immediately locked himself in the training room, meditating and performing various drills to strengthen his mastery over his power.

Time passed quickly—two days went by in a flash.

General Ross sat in his office, staring out the window at the night skyline, lost deep in thought.

A cigar burned between his fingers, wisps of smoke curling from its glowing tip.

Narrowing his eyes, Ross took a slow drag, then exhaled the smoke onto the glass pane before him.

At that moment, the office door slid open. A middle-aged female officer in uniform stepped in briskly, her voice urgent."Sir! There's news from the hospital—about Blonsky!"

Ross immediately rose to his feet, stubbed out the cigar in the ashtray, and followed her to the hospital without a word.

As soon as they entered, a doctor rushed up to them.

Ross didn't bother with pleasantries."How's Blonsky? Have his family been informed?" he asked sharply.

The doctor's voice trembled with suppressed excitement and disbelief."I think… you'd better ask him yourself."

He stepped forward, pulling open the curtain beside a hospital bed.

Ross's eyes widened in shock at the sight before him.

Behind the curtain sat Blonsky—calmly unwrapping his own bandages while a nurse helped remove the medical braces on his arms.

When he noticed Ross entering, Blonsky looked up with mild confusion."Sir?"

Ross walked closer, disbelief in his gaze.

Blonsky's upper body was bare—and unscarred. His bones appeared fully healed, his movements strong and effortless. The man looked not just recovered, but more powerful than ever.

Ross placed a hand on his soldier's shoulder, his tone heavy with emotion."Glad to see you back on your feet, soldier."

Blonsky grinned. "Thank you, sir."

Ross stepped back, meeting Blonsky's eyes with a meaningful look."How do you feel?"

Blonsky's lips curled into a cold, restrained smile—his anger and resentment barely hidden."Not great. I'm ready for round three."

While Banner and Betty were still planning their next move, a major military meeting was underway to discuss how to deal with him.

Having chased Banner for over five years, Ross knew his methods well. If Banner hadn't fled yet, it meant he had unfinished business here.

Ross addressed the room firmly:"He's been drifting across countries for the past five years.""He never uses credit cards.""If he wanted to run, he'd be long gone. This time, he's not planning to.""If he's reaching out for help—we'll catch him.""You've all seen the files.""The aliases 'Mr. Green' and 'Mr. Blue' are now in the S.H.I.E.L.D. database.""The moment they contact each other, we'll know. The moment they appear, we strike."

"Yes, sir!" the officers responded in unison, their voices sharp and resolute.

Banner had no idea that his secret exchanges with "Mr. Blue" were already completely exposed to S.H.I.E.L.D.

When Banner and "Mr. Blue" exchanged data and arranged their meeting, Ross—through S.H.I.E.L.D.—also obtained the scientist's full information.

As Banner and Betty made their way toward New York, Ross had already prepared an elaborate plan to intercept them.

Meanwhile, within the Pentagram Alliance, Xiaobai continuously updated everyone on Banner and Betty's movements.

Meng Ran hadn't expected the two to head for New York. He remembered a huge battle between Banner and another monster in the movie—but couldn't recall exactly where it had taken place.

When Banner first settled in Virginia, Meng Ran assumed that was where the final battle would happen. So, he'd started preparing early, even having Harry develop various aircraft and equipment.

Now, with Xiaobai's live tracking and network surveillance, Meng Ran realized their final destination was actually New York.

Well… that's awkward.

"So… all those single-seaters, multi-seaters, short-range, and long-range flight devices we built… are they still useful?" Harry asked dryly.

"Uh…" Meng Ran's face stiffened. He'd completely miscalculated.

He coughed twice, trying to salvage his dignity."Ahem. Well, even if we don't need them this time, it's still good preparation. Next time we'll be ready to launch immediately. No need to start from scratch."

Nice save! Meng Ran thought to himself, relieved. That was close—I almost embarrassed myself in front of everyone.

The others exchanged glances, silently agreeing not to expose him. Gwen even nodded slightly—showing mercy by letting him keep a shred of dignity.

Just as the group was about to move on to another topic, Liu Xiu suddenly said,"Brother's got a point—but we really don't need those flight devices this time, do we?"

Meng Ran's smile froze instantly.

Gwen pressed her palm against her forehead and sighed helplessly.

Mary Jane and Peter, meanwhile, looked utterly entertained, as if watching a live comedy. If someone handed them popcorn, it'd be perfect.

Harry tilted his head toward the ceiling, as though his eyes could see straight through the roof to the sky outside.

When Liu Xiu finally noticed the sudden silence, he looked around in confusion.Did I say something wrong?

The others all avoided his gaze, pretending to examine the room's decorations with exaggerated interest—as if they'd never been here before.

Then Liu Xiu turned to Meng Ran—who was still smiling at him, eyes half-closed.

Seeing that expression, Liu Xiu's instincts screamed danger."Haha… well… Brother Meng Ran's right! We might not need them now, but next time for sure! Gotta plan ahead, right?"

"Pfft—!" Peter couldn't hold back his laughter anymore, bursting out loud.

Even the weakened Venom on Meng Ran's shoulder materialized, clutching its jagged mouth as it giggled uncontrollably.

Moments that embarrassed Meng Ran were rare—and everyone was clearly enjoying it.

Having a hardheaded teammate definitely made life less boring.

Meng Ran's forced smile grew stiff, his expression slowly darkening. He clamped his hand over Venom's mouth and said quietly,"You're losing your ribs tonight."

Ignoring Venom's muffled protests, he shoved the symbiote back into his body.

Then, still wearing his "kind" smile, he turned to Liu Xiu."Xiu'er, it's been a while since I checked on your training results, hasn't it?""The training room's free right now. Come—let me give you a little… personal guidance."

Liu Xiu immediately sensed the danger. Clutching his head, he groaned,"Ah! Brother, my head! It suddenly hurts so much! I'd better rest—"

Meng Ran's eyes gleamed with mock concern."What? A headache? That's serious.""Here, I've got just the thing—works instantly, cures everything."

He pulled out a massive pill—roughly the size of a baby's fist.

Liu Xiu stared at it in horror, his face twisting as the strong medicinal smell hit his nose.

"This medicine can't be chewed," Meng Ran said cheerfully. "You've got to swallow it whole. Here, I'll help."

He rolled up his sleeves, clearly ready for action.

"N-no no no! I'm fine now! Totally fine! My head's not hurting anymore!" Liu Xiu waved his hands frantically.

Meng Ran lowered his arm with a mock-surprised expression."Oh? It's already working? See? Didn't I tell you it's fast-acting?""Yes! Yes, absolutely!" Liu Xiu nodded rapidly, only to be dragged off toward the training room anyway, his face filled with despair.

The others watched the two disappear down the corridor, pity in their eyes.Poor Xiu'er… after this training, will he even remember his own name?

Just then, Meng Ran suddenly turned mid-step."Peter, did you just call me?"

Peter blinked. "Huh? No—"

"What? You think you haven't been training enough lately and want to join too?" Meng Ran cut him off.

Peter panicked. "I didn't say that! Meng, don't make stuff up!"

Meng Ran's eyes gleamed coldly."Oh? Did you just say you've got a headache too?"

Peter's face fell. He glanced at the others for help—but they all looked away sympathetically.

Feeling the chill of Meng Ran's gaze, Peter could only grit his teeth, muttering to himself as he followed them into the training room:"Come on, Peter… you're Spider-Man. You've sparred with him before. You can do this. Don't be scared…"

The three remaining teammates could only sigh as they watched the "condemned" duo disappear.

"Poor Xiu'er… no sense of timing at all."

"And poor Peter… laughed a little too loud."
