Chapter 80 - Mr. Blue and the Serum

The next day, after a long and exhausting journey, Banner and Betty finally arrived at Culver University.

The New York taxi driver had driven like a maniac the whole way, and Banner had spent most of the ride trying to calm himself down, keeping his heart rate steady.

Once they reached the university, Banner immediately went to find Dr. Samuel Sterns, the man known online as Mr. Blue.

The two had been communicating through encrypted channels for a long time, and now, at last, they were meeting face-to-face.

After a brief exchange about Banner's research results, Sterns led Banner and Betty to his laboratory.

The experiment they were about to perform could possibly suppress Banner's condition—but it wasn't guaranteed to cure him completely, and it carried a very real risk of death.

Still, Banner decided to take the risk. He had waited too long for this moment. Even if there was danger, he had to try.

Inside the lab, Sterns began securing Banner to the operating table.

"If you start reacting violently, this will help keep you from hurting yourself," Sterns said, tightening the straps around Banner's arms.

When Banner was secured, Sterns went to the control panel, grumbling about his clumsy graduate students messing up his instruments while rapidly recalibrating the settings.

He was clearly excited—this was a monumental moment.

"This is going to feel… interesting," Sterns murmured, starting up the machine. "Let's begin."

Banner's expression immediately twisted in pain. Through thin plastic tubing, red blood flowed from his body into a bag filled with a strange purple liquid.

"The blood separator will mix the antidote with your blood," Sterns explained. "But it'll only take effect if you transform completely."

Betty stood beside Banner, her voice soft and soothing. "Relax, Bruce. Just breathe."

"All right, that's the first step done," Sterns said, pressing a final key on his computer before quickly handing Betty a set of electrode patches.

Together, they attached the electrodes to Banner's body, and finally, Sterns placed a wooden bite block between Banner's teeth.

Once everything was ready, Sterns picked up two charged defibrillator paddles and stood over Banner's head. A nervous grin spread across his face.

"Ready? To be honest, even I'm a little nervous, haha."

Banner couldn't speak with the wooden block in his mouth, but his eyes met Sterns's, and he gave a firm nod.

Betty's heart pounded in her chest. She gripped Banner's hand tightly—until Sterns warned, "If I were you, I wouldn't do that. It could get dangerous."

Banner released her hand, giving her a calm look that told her not to worry. Betty nodded and clasped her hands in front of her chest, silently praying for him.

A sharp zzzzt! filled the air as blue arcs of electricity danced between the paddles.

Sterns's expression hardened with concentration as he brought the paddles closer—pressing them against Banner's temples.

The crackle of electricity filled the room. Banner's body convulsed, his muffled screams breaking through clenched teeth as he bit hard on the wooden block to endure the agony.

When the shock was done, Sterns set the paddles aside. He and Betty stood tensely, watching Banner writhe in pain.

Then suddenly—he went still. Gasping for breath, he opened his eyes.

They glowed a brilliant green.

Thick, bulging veins appeared beneath his skin, pulsing as his bones began to stretch and reshape with loud, cracking sounds.

"Oh my God…" Sterns whispered, his jaw hanging open in awe.

Banner spat out the bite block and roared as his body swelled larger and larger, his skin turning green.

The leather straps restraining him began to stretch and tear apart.

With a guttural growl, Banner finally completed his transformation into the Hulk.

Sterns thought the process was over and turned to press the final sequence on the console—but Betty stopped him just in time.

"Not yet!" she shouted.

Sterns blinked, confused. He had never actually witnessed a transformation before. "Why not? Isn't this the moment?"

"Wait—just a little longer," Betty said firmly, her eyes locked on the monster before her.

Finally, when the transformation stabilized, she yelled, "Now! Do it, now!"

Sterns, entranced by the sight of Hulk's massive, muscular body, stood frozen for a second, whispering, "My God… what a magnificent specimen…"

But the moment broke when one of Hulk's arm restraints snapped with a loud crack.

With an instinctive motion, Hulk swung his arm—and sent Sterns flying backward. The scientist's head struck a cabinet, leaving a bleeding gash on his forehead.

Seeing that Hulk was close to breaking free, Betty threw herself onto his chest, shouting over and over, "Bruce! Calm down! Bruce, look at me!"

Her voice cut through the rage. Hulk's eyes met hers—and he stilled.

"Now, Sterns! Do it!" Betty screamed.

Groaning, Sterns pushed himself up and ran to the controls, slamming the final button.

With a mechanical beep, the purple serum flowed back into Banner's bloodstream.

Slowly, his breathing eased. The green faded from his skin. His massive frame began to shrink.

The antidote was working. Banner was turning back.

Betty stayed on top of him, tears in her eyes. "Bruce! Can you hear me? Bruce!"

Banner drew a deep, shuddering breath—then opened his eyes.

Betty gently touched his face, her eyes glistening. "You're all right, Bruce… You did it."

Sterns checked the data on his monitor, astonished. "You're right. He made it… it's over."

But outside, the night sky filled with the sound of rotor blades. Several helicopters were speeding toward the lab, and on the ground, sirens blared as police cars and military jeeps raced in the same direction.

Inside, the three continued discussing the experiment—particularly whether to destroy the research materials and blood samples taken from Banner.

Sterns was ecstatic, his eyes gleaming with scientific zeal.

"If we keep going, Bruce, the possibilities are endless!" he exclaimed. "Gamma technology could revolutionize medicine—we could create hundreds of cures, make humanity immune to disease!"

"Bruce, we could win a Nobel Prize!"

Banner, however, remained calm. "We have to destroy it," he said quietly.

"All of it."

"What?! Are you insane?" Sterns shouted, unable to believe his ears.

"You don't understand," Banner said firmly. "This power is too dangerous—and uncontrollable. If the military gets its hands on it, they'll turn it into a weapon."

As they argued, a sniper outside had already taken aim.

"I don't like the politicians either," Sterns snapped, shaking his head, "but you're being paranoid."

Banner gave a weary smile, stepping closer to him—just as a tranquilizer dart shattered the window and struck him square in the back.

He didn't even finish his sentence before collapsing to the floor.

At that moment, Blonsky burst into the lab, shoving Betty aside as she tried to stop him.

He had already taken a second dose of the super-soldier serum—his power enhanced again, his temper far more violent.

He grabbed Banner by the collar and yanked him up, his face twisted with rage.

"Where is he?" Blonsky snarled.

"Where is he?!" he shouted again, slapping Banner's face hard. "Bring him out! Bring him out!"

A team of armed soldiers rushed in, shouting for Blonsky to stop. He ignored them, furious, until he saw Banner's eyes roll back, his body limp.

Disgusted, Blonsky threw him down and smashed the butt of his rifle into Banner's skull.

The heavy blow sent Banner into unconsciousness once more.
