Chapter 87 - The Mysterious Palace (1/4)

Tao Wen struggled to lift his hand and tap the phone screen.

"...Tao."

Nick Fury's voice came from the other end of the line."I'm sorry. I didn't expect those two to treat you that way. I only told them to persuade you to leave S.H.I.E.L.D. amicably—I never thought they'd go so far as to completely ignore your dignity. Don't worry, I've arranged some compensation for you. It's already been transferred to your account. I hope it'll help you live out the rest of your days comfortably. That amount should be more than enough to enjoy yourself in any country."

"Fury, do you even realize what the hell you're saying?!" Tao Wen roared, fury burning in his voice. "After everything I've done for you—this is what I get?! Are you even human?!"

He shouted so loudly the veins on his neck bulged. But before he could say more, Fury hung up. The flat, repetitive beep-beep tone echoed coldly in his ear.

"Damn it!!"

Tao Wen slammed his fist down on the bed. Even in his weakened state, the impact made the bed frame jolt upward. Rage surged through him—he couldn't believe Fury had really done this to him.

"You'll pay for what you've done! I swear it!!"

His voice roared through the room, but only silence answered.

As the seconds ticked by, his anger didn't fade—instead, it grew hotter, more violent. Alongside that fury came a deep sense of crisis pressing against his chest.

Eventually, he forced himself to calm down.

Originally, he had planned to use S.H.I.E.L.D.'s resources to quietly collect fragments from various superheroes. But now that door was shut for good.

Sooner or later, he'd have to face terrifying beings—Thanos and perhaps others even more dreadful. If he wanted to survive, he needed the Nine Divine Armaments as soon as possible.

"No... I can't just sit here and wait for death."

"I need to change my approach."

After thinking it through, realization struck him like lightning. Even if he'd stayed in S.H.I.E.L.D., that wouldn't guarantee victory against Thanos. And even if he could handle Thanos himself, he couldn't possibly face the entire army that followed him.

To survive, he needed more than power—he needed a force of his own.

The phone suddenly rang again.

He glanced at the caller ID—Hill.

He didn't pick up. Not now. Things were far too sensitive; he couldn't risk dragging Hill into this mess. Once this storm passed, then he'd contact her again.

For now, he lay quietly on the bed, planning his next move.

Building an organization was a must. But finding capable members… that would be the real challenge.

Time slipped by, and after half a day, he finally shook off the lingering dizziness.

"This feeling is awful," he muttered. "I need equipment that gives magic resistance. Or maybe I should set up a tech company—develop my own defensive gear."

He rubbed his temples and walked to the window.

From his apartment on the ground level, he could see the whole of New York stretching out before him.

"Heh... Fury."

He picked up his phone and stared at the message notification: One million transferred.

A cold, mocking smile spread across his face.

All that work, and he gives me just a million?

Pathetic.

He thought for a moment, then dialed another number—Tony Stark.

If he wanted to build a power base, he needed two things above all: money and connections. And Tony Stark had both.

"Hello, this is J.A.R.V.I.S. Please hold. I'll connect you to Mr. Stark right away."

The polite AI voice sounded in his ear, followed by Tony's voice a few seconds later.

"Tao! I just heard what happened. I'm furious! How could they treat you like that? It's absolutely disgraceful. I'm done with S.H.I.E.L.D.—I'm out! Tao, if there's anything you need, anything at all, just say the word."

"Tony, thank you for that. Actually, I do need your help," Tao Wen said calmly.

"Name it."

"To be precise," Tao said, his tone deepening, "the entire world needs our help. I've been observing the stars, making some calculations… and I've sensed it. In the near future, several extraterrestrial forces will launch an invasion against Earth. I plan to create an organization—one that can stand against them. I know you've always wanted to protect peace and have already done much for it. Together, we can make it happen."

"What?" Tony's voice wavered slightly. "Aliens invading Earth? Are you serious?"

Humanity hadn't officially discovered alien life yet—Tao Wen's claim sounded far-fetched. But... Tony trusted him.

If it weren't for Tao Wen, Tony might've been destroyed by Ivan Vanko, and the Elemental Crisis would've gone unresolved.

Besides, Tao Wen came from the East—where mysterious arts and ancient divination weren't myths but traditions. Maybe he really could sense things others couldn't.

And from a businessman's perspective, the alliance made sense. Tony's mind quickly ran through the pros and cons.

"I'm in," he said firmly. "I'll help you establish this organization. What do you need?"

"I'll need a base of operations—and some initial funding."

"That's easy. I've got a large factory in the East District. It was supposed to be a startup incubator, but it's still in early development. Give me a week, and I can turn it into a proper base. As for funding, I'll have J.A.R.V.I.S. wire you one billion for construction. By the way, Tao—what do you plan to call this organization?"

Tony's tone carried a hint of excitement. He could already picture it—a coalition of superheroes and mutants standing under one banner.

If an alien threat was really coming, he was willing to invest half his fortune if it meant Earth's survival.

"The name will be… Xuan Gong."

"Xuan Gong?" Tony repeated, rolling the name on his tongue. "Nice. It's got that mysterious Eastern vibe. I like it."

"Well then, I'll be waiting to see what you build. I've got a few things to handle—let's talk again soon. Looking forward to your good news."

The call ended.

A second later—ding!

Tao Wen's phone chimed. He opened the notification: 1,000,000,000 deposited.

"Tony's as reliable as ever."

For a brief moment, excitement surged through him. One billion dollars—that was no small amount. But the thrill faded quickly. He knew this was just a start; a billion wouldn't last long when building a global organization.

"Well, with funds in hand, time to start recruiting."

He pocketed his phone, left the hotel, and stepped onto the bustling street. Then he paused, realizing his car was still at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters.

He thought about getting a new one. After a moment of hesitation, he decided on a Rolls-Royce Phantom instead of a Faraday. It had more presence—better for attracting the right kind of people. He even hired a private chauffeur on the spot.

Then he gave the driver an address—Peter Parker's home.

Peter would be his first recruit.

When the Rolls-Royce pulled up in front of Peter's house, it caused an instant commotion. Crowds of onlookers—men and women alike—gathered, snapping photos and whispering in excitement.

As the doors opened, Tao Wen stepped out in an elegant suit and approached an elderly woman standing at the gate.
