Boom!!
Just as the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and Tony were lost in their own wild thoughts—pondering the gap between the "Justice League" and the "Avengers"—a massive explosion suddenly erupted from the war fortress hovering in the sky.
The thunderous blast made every heart jolt.
Even the New Yorkers who had been staring up at the sky—because that was all they could do—locked their eyes on the explosion, hardly daring to blink.
At this moment—
The platform extending from inside the war fortress to its outer shell was swallowed by blinding flames and thick rolling smoke, completely blocking everyone's view.
But many people had already noticed a minute earlier that this explosion came from colliding artillery fire.
The humanoid mech controlled by the alien unleashed terrifying blue energy blasts.
Cyborg refused to be outdone, gathering sonic cannon rounds.
The two attacks collided. In an instant, the fortress's outer platform was obliterated, and the destruction continued spreading straight into the interior.
Immediately after, Batman shot out of the smoke like a lethal blade.
Clack-clack-clack-clack!
Under Batman's control, the Batmobile shifted direction. The front and sides morphed into fearsome cannons, aiming at the indistinct silhouettes in the smoke. A storm of fire burst forth.
Dudududududu!
Specialized rounds overheated the barrels as they poured into the smoke like a rainstorm, triggering another massive explosion.
"Damn humans!"
Lang's furious roar echoed across the entire sky.
Even ordinary New Yorkers could hear it—spoken in perfect American English.
They didn't know the inside story, so they didn't find it strange.
Besides, once Batman appeared, the tension in their hearts sharply diminished.
These people had unwavering faith that Batman would resolve the crisis, once again snatching New York from the jaws of disaster.
As for S.H.I.E.L.D., even Nick Fury, the one-eyed bastard himself, was stunned.
He simply couldn't wrap his head around why an alien would speak Earth's languages so fluently.
But after a moment's thought, he remembered: back in the 1990s, when the Kree and Skrulls visited Earth, they had also spoken flawless American English.
So the alien named Lang speaking English wasn't all that unusual.
…
After bursting through the smoke, Batman swung into the war fortress using his grapnel gun and disappeared again.
But everyone already guessed that Batman had entered the massive ship with a purpose.
He was likely planning to seize control of it.
People's minds raced, full of anticipation.
"Get out here!"
Seconds later, Lang's enraged bellow shook the fortress.
Under his psychic command, all weapons systems inside immediately reconfigured, locking onto Batman—onto Anton.
Boom-boom-boom!
Energy blasts streaked toward him.
Anton's expression did not change. His cape flared, and he threw out a Batarang.
It curved in midair and returned to his hand.
Those incoming energy rounds exploded mid-flight, intercepted by the Batarang.
A blast of fire and shockwaves erupted, but his specially made Bat-cape absorbed it all.
Crack-crack-crack!
Under the force of the explosions, parts of the fortress's interior were blown apart.
Lang could only watch—he had no free mind to control that area.
Because he was being pinned down by Anton's Cyborg clone and couldn't spare the focus to deal with Batman inside the fortress.
It was worth mentioning that Anton's reason for breaking into the interior was the Lighthouse.
"Lighthouse" was a codename—it could be seen as the core unit of the war fortress.
Everything about the fortress was built around it.
As long as he gained control over the Lighthouse, Cyborg could completely take over the fortress and turn this alien craft into their own base—into a Justice League headquarters.
That was Anton's true objective.
He lifted his head slightly and spotted a small floating sphere about a hundred meters away.
No doubt—that was the Lighthouse.
But Lang had marked him as the primary target, and every weapon in the fortress was locked onto him.
Even taking a single step forward felt like walking a tightrope between skyscrapers—one mistake, and he'd be smashed to pieces.
"The game has just begun."
Anton whispered, quickening his pace. Artillery fire swept past him as he moved like a fish darting through water, rapidly closing the distance between himself and the Lighthouse.
…
At the same time—
Outside the fortress platform.
The smoke dispersed.
Cyborg hovered in midair, facing off against the humanoid mech controlled by Lang.
Lang's teeth were clenched.
Through the mech's internal monitors, he understood Batman's objective inside the fortress, and this filled him with unprecedented fury.
But Cyborg was keeping him busy—he couldn't return inside to deal with Batman.
"Damn humans!"
The two before him were not unfamiliar names.
At the very least, Lang—who had studied Earth—had heard of the pair.
"Superheroes…"
Lang sneered. "Heroes are usually corpses. Superheroes? They just die even faster."
He had observed Earth for quite a while.
Aside from the Bigfoot Gang—the first to recover fragments of his psychic transmitter—he also collected the names of Earth's so-called "threat-level" superheroes.
Batman and Cyborg were two of them.
The others included Iron Man, stuck outside the fortress, as well as Spider-Man and the Ninja Turtles, who were battling the Bigfoot Gang.
But overall, Lang didn't consider any of them worth worrying about.
As an interstellar criminal controlling a war fortress packed with terrifying technology, he had defeated far stronger opponents than this. A backwater planet like Earth—practically a galactic slum—posed no threat.
"Cyborg, I'll kill you first. Then I'll take my time dealing with Batman."
The mech's fist tightened.
Lang spoke each word slowly:
"This is a new game. Be careful, Earthlings."
His voice dripped with rage.
Clearly, a being who once roamed the cosmos freely now found himself being challenged by mere "ants."
And those ants had already broken through his first line of defense.
It infuriated him beyond reason.
"I was about to say the same thing."
Cyborg replied calmly.
Boom!!
Another exchange of energy blasts.
Amid the blinding fire and shockwaves, a blue beam infused with freezing power streaked through the sky, freezing the flames midair before tearing toward Cyborg at impossible speed.
Cyborg raised his arm slightly—his sonic shield intercepted it.
Whoosh!
The next moment, jets fired from his back, launching him like a bolt toward Lang for close-quarters combat.
Anton—through his Cyborg clone—knew very well:
In terms of pure technological level, Lang's war fortress and mech armor were no weaker than Mother Box technology from Apokolips.
In short—this would be tough to win outright.
But Lang had one fatal weakness:
He personally possessed no combat ability. He relied entirely on his mech and his fortress.
Destroy the mech, then use Batman (Anton's main body) inside the fortress to interfere with Lang's control systems, and Lang would be helpless—unable to fight back at all.
Bang!
Before the eyes of the entire city—
The mech and Cyborg collided head-on.
At that same moment, outside the fortress, Iron Man—Tony Stark—fell into deep thought.
He saw the alien being held at bay by Cyborg and knew he couldn't let this chance slip by.
Even if he wasn't the main hero today, he could at least help Cyborg and Batman a little.
He had to show his face!
He'd spent forever failing to breach the fortress, and yet Cyborg and Batman sliced through it like it was made of paper.
It was a huge blow to Tony's ego.
And every New Yorker with eyes had seen it happen.
Tony was beating his chest in regret.
He felt he had to salvage his heroic image.
He needed everyone to remember: Tony Stark was still the genius inventor blessed with both brilliance and charm.
With that thought—
Even though his armor had only a sliver of energy left, he blasted forward at supersonic speed, shooting straight toward the fortress.
Boom!
The shockwave rippled in all directions behind him.
"Iron Man is taking action again!"
"He's trying to help Cyborg and Batman!"
People stared at him with hope.
Then—
Clack-clack-clack-clack-clack!
Even though Lang was too busy fighting Cyborg to control the fortress manually, its exterior defense protocols were pre-programmed to operate automatically.
Thick cannons rotated again, locking onto the red figure speeding toward them.
Tony narrowed his eyes, tense.
"Sir, I have plotted a route for you."
Using its superior computational power, JARVIS analyzed the cannons' movement patterns and calculated a potential path that Tony could slip through.
"Beautiful work, JARVIS!"
Hearing that, Tony's tension vanished. His confidence surged back immediately.
He increased thrust from his palms and boots.
Whoosh!
Tony accelerated sharply.
Boom!!
And just then—An energy blast sealed off his entire path forward.
"Damn it!!"
Tony shouted in panic. "JARVIS, your route was wrong!"
"My apologies, sir."
JARVIS replied in deadpan humor: "I hope I get the chance to calculate a new route next time."
Boom!!
Tony didn't even have time to answer before he slammed head-first into a cannon blast.
The explosion sent him spinning, weightless, plunging straight downward.
Iron Man disappeared from sight.
People watched silently, offering silent prayers for Iron Man.
…
"Armor integrity at 78% damage. All weapon systems offline. Thrusters offline. Flight capability lost…"
JARVIS paused."Good luck, sir."
"Damn it!"
Tony gritted his teeth. "JARVIS, if I survive this, you better pray your core algorithms aren't replaced."
He plummeted rapidly, approaching the TCRI building.
Even with armor, falling from this height was no joke.
He'd be lucky to keep half his life.
Tony closed his eyes—
Suddenly, he felt himself caught by something soft and web-like.
Someone had caught him.
He opened his eyes.
A pair of enormous, glossy eyes stared back at him.
The face before him had a giant maw filled with sharp fangs.
Drool dripped—
Splat!Right onto his visor.
Tony startled—then exhaled in relief.
He knew this creature well.
Ugly, yes, but anyone would remember this particular appearance.
"Venom!"
Tony breathed out. "Eddie Brock—I owe you my life."
Back when he was investigating whether Anton was Batman, the first undeniable evidence he found was Eddie's existence—and Venom's true identity.
…
Inside the fortress, Anton—Batman—and outside, the Cyborg clone battling Lang's mech—remained unaware of Tony's predicament.
Both of them were fully focused, determined to crush the crisis with overwhelming force.
Strictly speaking, it wasn't even a "crisis."
It was just like a game.
To beat the boss, you had to go all out.
Right now—
Anton was fewer than fifty meters from the Lighthouse.
His face beneath the cowl was calm. He walked through the fortress interior as though strolling through a garden. Cannon fire and energy beams flew past him, narrowly missing as he weaved through them with impossible precision.
Thankfully, Cyborg had previously planted digital "spikes" into the fortress's system—
This reduced a large portion of Anton's pressure.
Still, ultimate control belonged to Lang.
To permanently stop these attacks, Anton needed the Lighthouse. Only after taking full control could he shut everything down.
Meanwhile—
Cyborg and Lang's battle had reached its peak.
Their close-quarters clash involved not only combat skill but also the power of their respective weapons.
Cyborg's arsenal was partly Earth-made and partly alien.
Lang's mech armor was built entirely from cutting-edge extraterrestrial tech.
Both sides wielded weapons of tremendous power.
They both quickly realized—taking direct hits was unacceptable.
So they fought while constantly dodging.
Brilliant energy blasts bloomed behind them like fireworks.
New Yorkers watched, utterly spellbound.
Time ticked by, and the war fortress's assembly progress reached an alarming 91%.
It was nearly complete.
Once the fortress was fully assembled, Earth would face catastrophe.
Seeing the deadlock in the sky—and seeing no signs of movement from inside the TCRI building, where Spider-Man had entered long ago—Nick Fury grew tense again, hand drifting toward his pager.
Boom!!
Suddenly—the battle on the street ended.
Rhino and Bebop were defeated by Green Arrow and the Ninja Turtles working together.
The two forces exchanged a glance and immediately rushed into the TCRI building, determined to wrest control of the psychic transmitter from the Bigfoot Gang and assist Batman and Cyborg above.
The remaining S.H.I.E.L.D. agents followed without waiting for Fury's orders, pouring into the building.
