Mrs. Athens' assistant opened the front door and found a raven-haired woman standing outside. Rain poured heavily, but the visitor remained sheltered beneath an umbrella held by her aide.
"This wasn't an expected visit, Mrs. Manhattan," the assistant said sternly, narrowing her eyes at the woman. Even with rainwater splashing against her heels and shins, Mrs. Manhattan maintained her lofty bearing.
It was late, and the sun had long since set. This was hardly an appropriate hour for an unannounced visit, especially from someone who had flown all the way from Manhattan.
"I'd like to see Mrs. Athens. It's important."
"So important that it couldn't be discussed over the phone?"
"I needed to see her in person. And isn't this questioning above your pay grade?" Mrs. Manhattan raised an eyebrow. "You should speak to her first."
