Christie stood behind the door, watching her husband dial Mrs. Athens' number again and again without an answer.
"Ar…"
She stopped herself, glanced at him one last time, then quietly closed the door.
Taking a deep breath, she walked away. When she entered the main sitting room, her eyes widened at the sight of Isolde's friends. Lucy, Percival, Snow and Isaac were all there.
They had changed so much. Christie had kept tabs on each of them, but Isaac seemed different in a way she couldn't quite explain. There was something distant about him.
"Isolde wanted Godfrey to rest here," Percival said, rising to his feet.
"Godfrey?" Christie looked around. "Where are they?"
"She took him to the bedroom, but she didn't say which one," Lucy replied.
Christie immediately returned to Arthur. Surely this news would lift his spirits. This time, she knocked.
"I'm busy," Arthur called sternly.
She could hear the guilt beneath his irritation.
