Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The First Fragment's Secret Darkness

Chapter 18 – The First Fragment's Secret

Darkness.

Not the cold, empty void of death, but a heavy, suffocating weight pressing against his senses. Voices drifted in and out, muffled, distant. Heat licked his veins one moment, then an icy chill gripped his bones the next. For a time, Chen Yue floated between worlds, drowning in fragments of pain and light.

Then—he woke.

The first thing he saw was moonlight.

Soft, silver beams bathed the chamber, streaming through a ceiling carved with runes older than empires. The walls shimmered with crystal veins, their glow muted like stars hidden behind mist. He lay on a stone bed draped in black silk, his body wrapped in faint silver radiance that pulsed in rhythm with his heartbeat.

And sitting beside him was Selene.

She was motionless, her posture elegant as a carved statue, yet there was an air of quiet dominance in the way she occupied the space. Her amethyst eyes locked onto his the moment they fluttered open, and for the first time, Chen Yue felt something… unsettling.

Her gaze was not just looking at him. It was inside him.

Chen Yue tried to speak, but his throat was raw, his voice little more than a whisper.

"…How long?"

Selene tilted her head slightly, her lips curving into that calm, knowing smile.

"Three days."

His brows furrowed. "Three…?"

"You burned your life force," she said softly, her voice like silk sliding over steel.

"Even with the Nameless Core awakened, your mortal body is fragile. If I had not intervened…" She leaned forward slightly, her gaze sharpening.

"…you would be dead."

Chen Yue's jaw tightened. Figures. He tried to sit up, but a lance of pain shot through his ribs, making him grit his teeth.

Selene's hand moved before he realized—cool fingers pressing lightly against his chest, pinning him down with strength that felt effortless yet unbreakable.

"Do not force yourself. Your body is not ready."

The touch sent a shiver down his spine—not from weakness, but from the strange, almost intoxicating warmth of her Qi flowing into him. His eyes flicked to hers, and for a breath, the air thickened with something unspoken.

Then—

The door slammed open.

"Move your hand."

Velira's voice was ice sharpened into a blade.

Chen Yue turned his head—and winced. Velira stood framed in the doorway, her aura spiking so sharply the temperature in the room dropped several degrees. Frost crackled along the stone floor as she strode in, her white hair whipping like a banner of war. Her eyes—gods, those eyes—blazed with a fury so cold it burned.

Behind her, Ayara hovered hesitantly, her bow slung over her shoulder, her emerald eyes clouded with something softer—hurt, confusion, fear.

Selene didn't flinch. Didn't move. Her fingers remained on Chen Yue's chest, her smile calm, almost playful.

"Little wolf," she murmured, as if amused by Velira's murderous aura.

"You're late."

Velira stopped at the foot of the bed, her hand on her sword hilt, frost mist curling around her like a storm barely contained.

"Get. Your. Hand. Off. Him."

Chen Yue's pulse quickened. He could feel the tension in the air coil tighter and tighter, like a bowstring ready to snap.

Selene's eyes glimmered faintly as she tilted her head.

"Why?"

Her voice was soft, but it cut deeper than any blade.

"Because you think he belongs to you?"

Velira's jaw clenched, her knuckles whitening on her hilt. "Because you're a snake. I don't know what you want with him, but if you try to use him—"

"Use him?" Selene's smile deepened, the corners of her lips curving like a crescent moon. She leaned closer to Chen Yue deliberately, her hair brushing his cheek like liquid night.

"Oh, child. I don't intend to use him." Her voice dropped into a husky whisper that made Chen Yue's breath hitch.

"I intend to awaken him."

Velira's aura exploded.

The walls groaned as frost raced across the stone, crystals cracking under the sudden pressure. Ayara gasped, stepping forward quickly, her voice trembling.

"Velira, stop—this isn't the time—"

"Stay out of this, Ayara." Velira's tone was ice and thunder, her killing intent spiking so high that Chen Yue felt it like knives against his skin.

Selene, however, didn't so much as blink. Her fingers lingered on his chest for another deliberate heartbeat before she finally rose, moving with the unhurried grace of a queen who feared nothing—not even the sword of the woman glaring death at her.

She stepped back, but her gaze never left Chen Yue.

"Fine." Her voice was silk threaded with steel.

"But when he dies because of your weakness, remember this moment."

Velira's grip tightened, frost cracking beneath her boots. For a terrifying second, Chen Yue thought she would draw her blade and strike—but then Selene turned and walked to the far side of the chamber, her back to them, her poise radiating a quiet, infuriating confidence.

The air remained brittle, sharp enough to cut.

Ayara finally broke the silence, her voice soft but urgent.

"Chen Yue… how do you feel?"

He forced a faint smile, though his body felt like shattered glass held together by threads of pain.

"Like someone poured molten steel into my veins and then froze it solid."

Ayara's lips trembled with a half-laugh, half-sob, and she reached for his hand, gripping it gently. Warm. Familiar. Safe.

"You scared me," she whispered. "You both scared me."

Velira's jaw tightened, but she said nothing, her storm slowly cooling into simmering frost.

Chen Yue squeezed Ayara's hand weakly before looking at Selene, his voice hoarse.

"You said something before… about the Fragment. About me."

Selene finally turned, her eyes glowing faintly like amethysts lit from within.

"Yes."

She walked back toward them, but stopped short of the bed, her gaze locking on his with the weight of eternity behind it.

"The First Fragment," she said softly, "is not an object. It is you."

The words struck like thunder.

Chen Yue froze. Ayara's eyes widened. Velira's brows furrowed, her icy mask cracking for a moment.

Selene continued, her voice low, each syllable dripping with power and inevitability.

"Your soul is the Fragment. The seed of the Nameless Path. The prophecy was never about finding something hidden—it was about awakening something buried inside you."

Chen Yue's mind reeled.

"But… why me?"

Selene's lips curved faintly.

"Because you are the one who can shatter the chains of heaven."

The chamber fell silent, the weight of those words pressing down like a mountain.

Ayara's grip on his hand tightened unconsciously. Velira's aura flickered, a storm of doubt and fury and something else swirling in her eyes.

Chen Yue swallowed hard, his voice barely above a whisper.

"And if I refuse?"

Selene's smile was like moonlight on a blade.

"Then the heavens will kill you before you take your next breath."
