The echo of Scarlett's words still rang in my mind long after I finished speaking.
For a while, no one said a thing. The only sound was the crunch of boots against twigs and damp soil, and the rustle of the wind through the trees.
I could feel the weight of their silence pressing down on me. Every step felt heavier, every glance sharper. I didn't need to look at them to know what they were thinking. Shock. Confusion. Maybe even pity.
But fear—that was what I dreaded seeing most.
