Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – Shackles of Innocence

The grand hall buzzed with whispers. Each word scratched at Laine's skin like a cold blade. Marble pillars stretched high above, catching the flicker of torchlight—but to him, they weren't pillars. They were bars, closing in, pressing against his chest with invisible weight.

At the center, he knelt, shackled. Blood ran from the split corner of his lip where the guards had struck him. The metallic tang hung heavy in the air. Every breath was a struggle, yet he kept his head high, refusing to bow to their judgment.

Upon the throne sat the Empress. His sister. The one who had once called him family. Her eyes were cold, unyielding, and sharp as steel. Every flicker of her gaze was a reminder of the past they had shared—and the betrayal that now defined them.

"Laine of the Imperial Blood," her voice rang out, cutting through the murmurs. "You stand accused of dishonoring the royal guard. Do you deny it?"

Laine lifted his head slowly, jaw tight. Pain gnawed at him, but his eyes burned with a quiet fire.

"I didn't do it," he spat, blood stinging his lip. "You know that."

A ripple ran through the court. Some gasped. Some scoffed. A few whispered doubts, twisting in the tension-filled air. The Empress's gaze swept over them, sharp as shattered glass.

"Your words mean nothing without proof. And the proof is against you."

Chains rattled as Laine clenched his fists. The iron bit into his wrists, but it could not touch the fire inside him. "Proof can be forged," he said quietly, deliberate. "Hearts cannot. Sister… do you truly believe I would harm the weak? You know me."

For a heartbeat, her eyes faltered, flickering with a shadow of doubt. Then they hardened again. Silence fell heavier than the chains around him.

The guard who accused him smirked, savoring the moment. Victory gleamed in his eyes, cold and merciless.

"You are hereby exiled from the Empire," the Empress declared, her tone absolute. "From this day forward, you are stripped of your name and blood. You are no longer of the Imperial Family. Leave this land, never to return."

Laine's chest tightened as the weight of her words sank in. The court erupted in jeers and whispers, their echoes bouncing off marble like distant thunder. Yet amidst the chaos, he found a bitter sense of clarity.

He smiled, faint and sharp. Bitterly. "Fine," he whispered to himself. "If I must survive as nothing… then I will show this world the strength of nothingness."

Even as the chains rattled, a spark ignited within him—a quiet resolve that no exile, no accusation, and no betrayal could ever break. The Empire might have cast him out, but it could never dim the fire of his spirit.
