Chapter 69 - Chapter 69 - Beneath The Same Moon

The night had fallen.

For ordinary people, it was a time to return to their homes. To rest. To forget the weight of the day.

But for others…

This was when their work began.

Demon Slayers.

Those who walked beneath the moon, blades drawn not for glory, but for survival. Protectors. Unsung heroes.

When they returned victorious, no one greeted them.

No cheers. No medals. No celebration.

Only silence.

And the quiet understanding that nothing had truly ended.

And when they failed…

There was only one certainty.

Death.

It was a harsh reality, one every Demon Slayer understood.

And yet, they did not stop.

Because the only thing that could stop them... was death itself.

They did not choose this path for honor.

Not for recognition.

But because of loss.

Because of fear.

Because of anger… and the memories that refused to fade.

They walked this path for one reason alone... A future where no one had to live in fear.

And to reach that future…

There was only one answer.

The complete extinction of all demons.

--------

Several bodies were lying on the forest floor, their forms twisted in unnatural stillness. Moonlight filtered through the canopy above, pale beams cutting through the darkness to illuminate the fallen.

On each uniform, the same kanji stood out in stark contrast...

[滅]

The night was quiet.

Too quiet.

Then...

A soft sound.

Not a footstep. Not quite a breath.

Something… shifting.

From between the shadows cast by the trees, a figure emerged, not by walking, but as if the darkness itself had loosened its grip and allowed something to slip through.

A man.

Or something that resembled one.

His outline wavered faintly, like heat rising from stone, never fully still, never fully present. Long black hair draped over his shoulders, strands swaying though the air was unmoving.

He stopped among the bodies.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then slowly… he tilted his head.

"…How fragile"

His voice was soft, almost thoughtful, as though he were observing broken tools rather than lives lost.

One of the corpses twitched, just barely, a final remnant of life clinging to the edge.

The figure's gaze shifted.

A single step forward.

No sound.

"…You saw me, didn't you?"

The dying Slayer's fingers trembled.

His eyes, barely open, reflected nothing but empty space.

Or perhaps… too many things at once.

The figure crouched beside the dying slayer, movements slow, deliberate. His hand hovered near his throat, but did not touch.

Instead, he leaned closer.

"…Tell me," he murmured, voice dipping into something almost gentle, almost curious. "…Which one am I?"

The Slayer's breath hitched.

Because before him, there was not one figure.

But many.

Silhouettes overlapping. Faces misaligned. Positions that did not make sense.

The forest itself seemed… wrong.

A faint smile touched the demon's lips.

"Ah… there it is"

Fear.

The hand moved.

A flash.

Something parted.

Silence returned.

The figure, That Demon, Tsukikage rose once more, stepping back into the web of shadows as if it welcomed him.

Above, the moon remained unchanged.

Below, nothing moved.

"… Lower ranks shouldn't wander so far from their cage," he whispered softly into the empty forest.

And then...

He was gone.

--------

Far from that silent forest, within the stillness of the Ubuyashiki Estate, the night carried a different kind of weight.

The wind moved gently through the garden, brushing past the hanging wisteria. The engawa remained dimly lit, a single lantern casting a soft glow across the polished wood.

Seated there, Kagaya rested quietly, his posture composed despite the frailty of his body. His eyes were closed, as if listening to something distant, something beyond sound.

Then...

The sharp flutter of wings broke the calm.

A Kasugai Crow descended from the darkness, landing with urgency upon the wooden railing.

*CAW!*

Its voice cut through the night.

"Report! Report! Emergency report!"

Kagaya did not startle. Slowly, he opened his eyes.

"…Go on"

"Multiple Demon Slayers confirmed dead!" the crow cried. "Location, eastern forest region! Bodies recovered, no signs of prolonged struggle! No defensive wounds consistent with standard demon attacks!"

A brief pause.

Even the wind seemed to hesitate.

"Cause of death… uncertain!"

The crow's wings twitched.

"Witness report unavailable! Final moments suggest confusion, disorientation, targets unable to identify enemy position!"

Kagaya's expression did not change, but something behind his gaze sharpened.

"…I see"

"Additional detail!" the crow continued. "Uniforms intact! Nichirin blades found nearby, unsheathed! No signs of retreat! The Opponent is likely one of the Demon Moons!"

That meant:

They were ready.

And still died without resistance.

Silence lingered for a moment.

Then Kagaya spoke, his voice soft, yet carrying quiet authority.

"…A demon that interferes with perception, and also a Demon Moons"

Not a question.

A conclusion.

The crow tilted its head.

"Further instruction?"

Kagaya's gaze shifted slightly toward the darkened horizon, as though he could already see the unseen threads moving far away.

A quiet pause followed.

Not hesitation… but weight.

"...We need someone capable," he murmured softly. "Someone who does not rely solely on sight…"

Names passed through his mind, one after another.

Tengen Uzui, away.

Gyomei Himejima is unavailable.

And Shinjuro Rengoku is no longer active.

Silence lingered.

"...Kage-kun would be the most suitable," he continued quietly.

And yet...

His voice stilled.

Sending him now… would be no different from placing him directly before death.

But if he chose another... More children would fall.

"...Oyakata-sama"

The soft sound of sliding wood broke the stillness.

From the open shoji behind him, Amane stepped forward, her presence as calm as ever. She moved without hurry, taking a seat beside him.

"Amane..."

Her gaze rested gently on him.

"What weighs upon your heart?"

Kagaya lowered his eyes slightly.

"My children are falling again," he said, his voice as soft as the wind. "And I find myself hesitating"

A small pause.

"I know who should go," he continued. "But I also know… he is not ready"

Amane listened without interruption.

Then, after a moment...

"Is he truly unready?" she asked quietly.

Kagaya did not answer.

Her gaze shifted slightly, toward the night beyond the garden.

"Or is it," she continued, "that he cannot stand alone right now?"

The words settled gently… but deeply.

Kagaya's fingers stilled.

"…You believe he needs someone beside him," he said.

"Yes," Amane replied.

Not forceful.

Not insistent.

Certain.

"There are burdens that cannot be carried in solitude," she said softly. "And there are battles that cannot be won alone"

A faint breeze stirred the hanging wisteria.

"If his heart is unsteady," she continued, "then perhaps the answer is not to keep him from the battlefield…"

A small pause.

"...but to ensure he does not face it alone"

Silence followed.

But this time... It was different.

Kagaya's gaze slowly lifted.

And for the first time since the report arrived... something aligned.

"…I see," he murmured.

Not realization.

Confirmation.

"Then we will entrust this mission to him," Kagaya said softly. "And ensure that he is not alone when he faces it"

Amane gave a small nod.

She did not ask who.

She already knew.

And so did he.

Far away...

Two paths, already beginning to drift apart... Were quietly being guided back toward one another.

#A/N: Is it too forced?

---

- In the Rengoku estate.

The moon hung quietly above the estate.

Kagerou sat alone on the engawa, its pale light his only companion.

He knew he couldn't stay like this forever.

But the more he thought… the heavier his chest became.

"… I shouldn't have said that," he muttered.

Too late.

What had been said could not be taken back.

That was the nature of the past.

"…I never thought I'd be this much of a fool"

Silence returned.

Then...

Soft footsteps approached from behind.

He didn't need to turn.

"Nothing changes just because you regret it," Shinjuro said as he sat beside him.

Two cups.

One bottle.

Set between them.

Without ceremony, Shinjuro poured.

He took one cup… and nudged the other toward Kagerou.

"…Drink"

Kagerou didn't respond.

But his hand moved.

One motion.

He emptied the cup.

No reaction.

Even the sharp bite of the wine felt dull on his tongue.

Shinjuro watched him for a moment… then let out a faint, rough chuckle before taking a sip himself.

"…You don't need to say anything," Kagerou muttered after a pause. "I already know I messed up"

Silence.

"…I know what I should do," he continued, quieter now. "But the more time passes… the harder it gets to face her"

His fingers tightened slightly around the empty cup.

"…I just need time"

"Huh?" Shinjuro glanced at him sideways. "Who said I was here to fix it for you?"

Kagerou frowned.

"This is your mess," Shinjuro said bluntly. "You deal with it"

"…Then why are you here?"

Shinjuro snorted.

He reached for the bottle and refilled Kagerou's cup.

"…Can't a man drink with his son?" A brief pause. "…Or are you too busy sulking?"

Kagerou exhaled slowly.

"…Tch," But he didn't refuse the drink. "…Whatever"

The night deepened.

On the engawa, Shinjuro and Kagerou drank in silence.

No more words were needed.

Only the quiet sound of liquid being poured and emptied.

Until the bottle ran dry.

Shinjuro set it down with a dull clink.

Then he stood.

Without a word, he turned toward the house.

One step.

Two...

He stopped.

"…Kage"

Kagerou didn't look up.

"Stop overthinking it," Shinjuro said.

A brief pause.

"Go face her"

Silence.

"…Worst case?" he added, glancing slightly over his shoulder. "She rejects you"

Another pause.

"Better than sitting here doing nothing"

The words settled.

No force.

No pressure.

Just truth.

"…That's all"

He slid the door open.

"Don't stay up too late"

The door closed behind him.

Silence returned.

Kagerou sat there, unmoving.

Then slowly... He lowered his head.

A quiet breath slipped from his lips.

"…And who said he didn't want to lecture me?"
