Chapter 39 - Episode 39 — “Temporary Alignment”

Level: 20 — Event Class

11:03 PM — Underground Cathedral Chamber

The chamber had never hosted this many factions at once.

Hunters on one side.

Circle representatives behind Darius.

Two custodians in the shadows.

Cinder standing alone near the center.

And Zack.

Not restrained.

Not guarded.

Standing freely.

That alone said everything.

The Opening Silence

The female hunter broke it first.

"You triggered the origin node."

Zack didn't deny it.

"Yes."

"You destabilized the city."

"No," he replied calmly.

"They did."

She didn't argue.

Darius stepped forward slightly.

"Continuum is reactivating."

A screen lit up.

Satellite imagery.

Underground energy pulse beneath industrial district.

Silver.

Stable.

Growing.

The custodian spoke softly:

"The node is drawing power."

Cinder added:

"It is attempting retrieval lock."

The Truth Everyone Hates

If Continuum retrieves Zack:

They learn.

They refine.

They replicate.

Metal evolution spreads.

Hierarchy collapses.

Hunters become obsolete.

Circle becomes irrelevant.

Custodians lose predictive control.

Everyone loses something.

Which means…

Everyone needs him alive.

But free.

The Proposal

The hunter crossed her arms.

"We destroy the node."

The custodian shook his head slightly.

"Direct assault risks cascade."

Darius looked at Zack.

"You are keyed to it."

Zack understood immediately.

The node isn't just beacon.

It's linked to his structure.

He can access it.

Cinder finally spoke:

"If the node activates fully, extinction cascade probability rises to 38%."

That number silenced the room.

38% is not low.

Uneasy Alliance Terms

The hunter spoke again.

"Temporary ceasefire."

"Hunters withdraw lethal authorization."

Darius added:

"Circle suspends intervention."

Custodian:

"We monitor but do not correct."

All eyes turned to Cinder.

He held Zack's gaze.

"If you destabilize at Level 21… I erase you."

No anger.

No threat tone.

Just function.

Zack nodded once.

"Fair."

That shocked the hunter.

"You're agreeing?"

Zack's steel flickered briefly.

"I didn't ask for this war."

Silence.

The Plan

Three-phase operation.

1. Hunters provide containment perimeter.

2. Circle provides combat suppression if node defends itself.

3. Zack enters node core.

Why him?

Because he's keyed.

Only Event Class host can interface without triggering cascade.

Custodian confirmed:

"Node recognizes structural signature."

Which means—

It sees him as home.

The Real Risk

Darius stepped closer.

"Inside the node, you will not level."

Zack frowned.

"Why?"

"Because it is designed to stabilize you artificially."

That's dangerous.

Artificial stabilization = loss of autonomy.

Continuum doesn't want him dead.

They want him compliant.

Controlled evolution.

Project perfected.

Zack's Choice

He could walk away.

Let factions fight.

Let node escalate.

Let Cinder purge everything.

But then more mothers die.

More forced hosts.

More prototypes.

He clenched his jaw.

"I go in."

The hunter nodded once.

"We move at 0300."

Cinder added quietly:

"If your structure shifts beyond tolerance… I intervene."

Zack didn't flinch.

"I know."

Outside the Chamber

As the meeting ended—

Darius stopped Zack briefly.

"One more thing."

Zack waited.

"At Level 20, you are stable."

"At Level 21…"

Pause.

"You begin affecting others."

Zack felt it faintly already.

Steel density influencing air pressure.

Small.

But present.

"If the node amplifies that," Darius continued,

"you may not remain singular."

Meaning—

Metal evolution could propagate.

Not by bite.

By proximity.

That's extinction cascade.

Zack exhaled slowly.

"So I shut it down."

"Yes."

Final System Message

As he left the chamber—

System pulsed.

ORIGIN NODE SYNCHRONIZATION WINDOW OPEN

HOST ACCESS REQUIRED

Clock started.

03:00 AM.

Silver glow beneath the city pulsing stronger.

Hunters mobilizing.

Circle assembling.

Custodians watching.

Cinder calculating.

Zack standing alone on the cathedral steps.

Level 20.

Not climbing anymore.

Choosing.

End of Episode 39.
