Chapter 75 - Chen Xi’s Change of Mind, the Illusion Master Makes His Move

Did they know Chen Xi?Maybe they had seen him on a TV screen once or twice—on a random advertisement, or perhaps his face printed on an old newspaper that had been turned into a makeshift blanket.

But going to a movie theater to watch one of his films? Or browsing the internet to learn about him? That was pure luxury to them.

At that moment, Mary whispered softly, "He's Mr. Chen Xi—the one who speaks out for us mutants!"

They hadn't seen him in person before, but they'd heard the name.

The children's eyes lit up. Dozens of them, wide-eyed and disbelieving, rushed over and surrounded him, excitedly repeating half-remembered stories they'd heard secondhand.

They didn't really understand what they were saying—just fragments of tales picked up on the streets, overheard while scavenging.None of them could afford even a single movie ticket.

Looking at these children and their yearning for the outside world, even Chen Xi's heart—usually so firm—tightened with pain.

He forced down the ache in his chest and raised his voice:"Children, I promise you this—one day, you'll live like ordinary kids. You'll laugh, grow, and play freely. There will be no hate. No discrimination. Only dreams—because I will build you a city of dreams!"

"But... will they really accept monsters like us?"

A little girl stepped out from the crowd. Mustering all her courage, she timidly raised her small hand.Chen Xi's heart twisted painfully.

It was a hand like a duck's webbed foot—thick skin joining every finger together.

"They will," Chen Xi said solemnly, patting her shoulder. "It will be your new home."

Under the dim light, the children's eager eyes reflected his own awakening.

Even without any system mission pushing him—he realized—he would still build that city for them.

"Children, bow to Mr. Chen."

At once, several older kids urged the little ones to bow. They didn't know any other way to show gratitude.

Chen Xi accepted the gesture quietly. For them, this was already everything they could offer.

Looking at their malnourished faces, he quickly pulled out supplies from his system's storage—everything that "Lockdown" had helped him acquire: food, clothes, daily necessities.

These were luxuries the children had never even imagined before. They hesitated to approach the pile.Only when the older kids told them to pick something did they carefully take one or two items each.

Chen Xi sighed heavily. They've been cautious for far too long…

He pulled out more—burgers, hot dogs, pizza, bread, milk, cola.

The children swallowed hard but didn't rush forward. Here, food was always shared evenly—no chaos, no greed.

Seeing their hesitation, Chen Xi smiled gently."Don't worry. From now on, you'll never go hungry again. Go ahead—pick whatever you like."

"R-really?" Mary asked softly, unable to believe it.

"Of course," Chen Xi said, patting her head. "I gave my word, didn't I? Now eat, all of you."

Finally, the children dared to eat. They nibbled slowly, smiling as if tasting happiness itself.

But Chen Xi soon noticed—they were hiding food away after just a few bites.

He sighed again."Don't worry. There will always be more. You'll never have to save food again."

He understood. They weren't greedy—they were terrified of hunger.

After his reassurance, they gathered the courage to take another portion, eating with innocent delight.

Only Mary still tucked some food into her worn-out schoolbag. She had a little sister to think about. The eldest is like a mother, Chen Xi thought. She might be abandoned herself—but her sister isn't.

He didn't stop her. Just watching them smile over bread and burgers made his chest ache.

There were too many children like this—mutant kids hiding in the dark corners of the world, where even a hamburger was a distant dream.

From their conversation, Chen Xi learned that these thirteen- and fourteen-year-olds were the group's leaders. They protected the younger ones, helped them survive. There were dozens of similar shelters scattered throughout New York.

Chen Xi left them his phone number and plenty of cash."Distribute it to the others," he said. "I'll come back soon. Stay out of sight for now."

He promised them that soon, they would have a real home.

When he got back into the car, Chen Xi sat in silence, unable to calm his thoughts.Even Lockdown didn't speak. He understood his master's heart.

The city outside was crawling with Sentinel robots—machines that could detect mutant genes within a hundred meters and eliminate them instantly.

"Boss," Lockdown suggested, "maybe we should gather all the mutant children at the CyberTech factory?"

Chen Xi rubbed his temples. "Let me think… Just let me think…"

There were too many mutants—hundreds of thousands, even in America alone. He couldn't protect them all.If too many gathered, the Sentinels would find them from miles away.Any mutant below Level Four was practically a sitting duck.

"Damn it! If only I could mass-produce more of you!" Chen Xi snapped, slamming the steering wheel.

Lockdown winced but said nothing—his body made entirely of vibranium, harder than steel, yet still stung from the blow.

"Ahem, Boss," he muttered. "Without an AllSpark, you can't mass-produce me. But maybe Ivan can make more Iron Man suits to fight them."

"Fine," Chen Xi said coldly. "If we can't fix the problem—then we'll destroy the ones who caused it."

His voice was like ice.If not for Stryker and the government high-ups still having some use, he'd have killed them all already.Let them dance on the edge of death for now.

He wasn't like the X-Men—he didn't have their moral restraints. If it came to it, he'd storm the White House himself.

Later that night, Chen Xi discussed with Wanda about building a temporary orphanage for the mutant children.

Wanda, sharing their pain, cried as she listened. She immediately began planning how to help.

But as she typed on the computer, Chen Xi suddenly frowned."That's strange," he muttered. "I was just out in the sun earlier—so why am I suddenly absorbing energy now?"
