Chapter 16 - Towards the Inner Zone

The disciples of the Clear Sky Sect scattered into the mist like sparks from a flame, each rushing toward their own fortune. Some formed alliances, others slipped off alone, blades already in hand.

Yuan didn't bother with either. Hands tucked into his sleeves, he turned away from the bustle with a lazy yawn. Beside him, Shen Yu matched his stride, sharp gaze flicking to every shadow. Within a few breaths, the two of them had parted from the others, their figures swallowed by the shifting fog.

"The secret realm is vast," Shen Yu said after a time, his tone low but steady. "What you see now is only the outer plains—safe compared to what lies deeper. Most disciples will scour these outskirts for herbs or stray treasures. But the true value lies in the inner zones."

Yuan raised a brow, more out of politeness than interest.

Unbothered, Shen Yu continued. "There are three categories of opportunities here. First, common treasure grounds—herb fields, mineral veins, and abandoned armories. They're fought over every decade, so most are already mapped and stripped clean. But some resources, like herbs and ores, do replenish with time."

He paused, eyes narrowing as a distant roar echoed through the haze. After confirming no threat approached, he went on.

"Second, trial grounds. Inheritances left behind by ancient cultivators—tests of will, talent, or strength. Rewards vary, but they're dangerous. Many disciples vanish within them, never to return."

"And third?" Yuan asked idly, kicking a pebble down the cracked stone path.

"The anomalies. Places that shift from opening to opening. Fragments of laws, broken secret realms within this realm, things no map can mark. They're the most unpredictable—and the most valuable, though also the most dangerous."

He paused, then added more detail. "There are some prominent resources everyone seeks. For example, the Spirit Soul Tree in the eastern valley. Every fifty years it ripens, producing only seven fruits. Each one can help a cultivator at peak Golden Core stabilize their foundation for breaking into Nascent Soul. Naturally, it draws bloodshed once word spreads."

Yuan tilted his head. "Seven fruits for a hundred greedy hands. Sounds peaceful already."

Shen Yu ignored the remark. "There's also the Jade Pagoda. A remnant structurefrom some unknown era, it draws disciples like moths. Each floor tests different aspects—comprehension, heart demons, raw combat strength and some other weird tests. No one knows how many floors it truly has, and no one has ever cleared it fully. Rewards vary, but they are never ordinary."

"Sounds like one of those 'enter at your own risk' tourist traps," Yuan muttered.

"Another," Shen Yu went on, "is the Elemental Pond. A spring said to contain concentrated qi of all five elements. For cultivators with elemental roots, even soaking in its waters can temper meridians and raise affinity. It appears in a different place each cycle, and its location is always contested."

He let the words hang in the air before concluding, "And those are only the known grounds. Many others lie hidden, waiting for fate—or luck."

Yuan whistled softly. "So, fruit trees, mystery towers, and a magic hot spring. Tempting. Almost makes me want to play serious for once."

Shen Yu didn't rise to the comment. His eyes flickered with vigilance instead. "But the greatest danger of the Southern Secret Realm isn't the beasts or the formations. It's the participants themselves. Rival sects, wandering clans, demonic cultivators… everyone is hunting opportunity. If you falter, you would become someone else's opportunity instead."

"Cheery," Yuan said, though a small smile tugged at his lips. "Like I always say—nothing unites people better than greed and paranoia."

They moved steadily through the fog, careful to avoid noise or sudden qi fluctuations. Once, a herd of horned beasts thundered across their path, their hides crackling faintly with lightning. Shen Yu pulled Yuan behind a jagged boulder until they passed. Another time, silhouettes of disciples loomed nearby, voices raised in argument. Shen Yu tugged Yuan aside, and together they slipped away unseen.

Yuan was already feeling a bit annoyed with all the man-handling. Secretly, he decided to first get that talent enhancer quickly, so he could use his strength openly without drawing too much attention.

They kept moving, and by the time the pale sun dipped lower in the realm's sky, they had pushed far from the scattered outskirts. The mist thinned, revealing fractured hills and ruined pavilions draped in vines—signs they were nearing the inner zone.

Shen Yu slowed, scanning the terrain with sharp eyes. "From here onward, every step must be taken with caution. The further we go, the greater the rewards… but also the greater the eyes watching for weakness."

Yuan stretched his arms with an easy grin. "Danger, treasures, possible enemies hiding in fog… sounds like the usual cultivation brochure. Lead on, Brother Shen. I'll supply the witty commentary."

Shen Yu exhaled softly, half exasperation, half acceptance, and pressed forward.

And so, side by side, the two figures slipped deeper into the realm—toward the shifting heart of the battlefield where treasures and death waited in equal measure.
