"--"
Silence overtook them.
The girl still kept her eyes on the lad that sat before her, and Ash still stared upward at her short-standing self.
"Huh?" his mouth finally moved as he quickly stood. "Huh?"
He couldn't understand what she said; could he have misheard her?
"Will you die for me?" She said it again, staring directly at him, unmoved, unshaking.
"Hell no," he softly laughed, shaking his head, attempting to retreat.
"Well, you don't have a choice," Wednesday said, following behind him.
"What?" he frowned, eyes turning and looking for an escape.
"No one believes what I saw yesterday," she said, still following. "So, I'll have to use you."
"Use me?" he turned to her, eyebrows raised. "I'm not a puppet… what are you talking about?"
He nearly turned away, but before he could, right as his head almost moved in a different direction, she put her hands in the pocket of her blazer, and out with it came a plastic bag, which had a half-burned joint of weed and a cap from a bottle of whiskey.
Ash almost laughed, shaking his head, nearly turning.
"You can't prove..."
"Your DNA is currently making its way to a testing center," she suddenly shot, moving the plastic closer to his face. "I'll give you a couple of hours to make your decision." She pulled the plastic back, placing it into the inner pocket of her blazer.
She didn't wait, just turned to leave.
"Okay, okay…" Ash had zero time to ponder it. He quickly pulled her shoulder, turning her figure to face him. "What do you want?"
There was a pause of silence, one that unexpectedly drained for a second too long.
"How did you do it?" she finally asked, eyes interlocked with his, noting as he raised a brow in confusion. "The monster, how did you escape?"
"I mean…" he stretched the back of his head, "I wouldn't call it an escape… 'cause you know, that creature was…"
"Answer the question," she shot, and he sighed after her.
"Like I said," he shrugged his shoulders, "it wasn't really an escape… that thing just got tired while eating me, so, then it ditched." He giggled while saying it. "Wouldn't blame it though, it took like… three hours for it to give up."
She glared at him, eyes analyzing his body.
"You're healed?" She asked, her gaze still hovering around him.
"Yeah…" he said, frowning as he noticed how she mostly didn't react. "That's the perk of being immortal, you know."
"Useful," she unknowingly whispered. But Ash had grown too annoyed, so he clapped his hands, disrupting her focused eyes.
"What do you want, woman?" he nearly broke after saying it, because in his mind, his words seemed too funny.
"Contingency," she said, raising her eyes to his. "In case the monster ever shows up."
"Hell no," Ash shook his head, turning around. He started walking away, frustration growing as she followed. "Nah, absolutely not… I don't care what you do with that DNA stuff. Do you even know how it feels to be chewed until boredom by… I don't know, Frankenstein?"
He stopped, turning to her.
"Yeah, I'm not doing that again… sorry." He continued, sighing because he realized he was moving in the wrong direction.
He smiled awkwardly, overtaking her figure and passing her.
"I was told I could use your body as I see fit," she said, causing Ash to pause and bite his teeth. "That's the only reason I agreed to 'playing' proposal in the first place."
He didn't turn to her, and she didn't need him to.
"I'll give you a day to answer my question," she said, still staring at him from the back. "Getting captured, tortured, we both know what happens if I break it."
She didn't wait to entertain any more complaints. She just turned, then left in the opposite direction.
Ash sighed, his hearing catching every one of her retreating footsteps.
"Deals…" he laughed at himself, inwardly cursing the old woman Frump for making so many promises without telling him.

{7 HOURS LATER}
THUD!
The door opened softly.
"Ash, your costume is here." A plastic bag was thrown toward Ash, who had just entered.
Ash's eyes suddenly brightened, their orbs analyzing the clown costume for the next day's event.
He then moved to Xavier's bed, where the five boys had gathered.
"So…" Ash said, tossing the plastic bag onto his bed on the far side. "What's the plan?"
The boys paused, turning and sharing glances.
They then burst out in laughter, hesitation void as one of them fell from Xavier's bed because of sheer laughter alone.
Ash stared at them, eyebrows raised.
"What… what's so funny?" he asked, oblivious to their giggles. "You don't have one, do you?"
"Do you blame us?" Eric, one boy seated there, shot, giggles still lurking in his voice. "Our competitors have sirens and stuff."
"Sirens?" Ash almost asked.
"Mermaids," Xavier shot with an answer.
"Shit…" Ash's eyes widened. "Those exist?" and they all laughed.
"Yep," Eric said, "and they call themselves kings and queens of the ocean… shit is real." And the laughter continued.
But then, there was a shimmer in Ash's eyes, as his orbs drifted to the other side of the room, atop his bed, right on his main pillow; it was open.
His heart skipped. His brain, holding onto fading disbelief.
His notebook was missing.
