Gary reached Pewter City.
He was on the lookout for a Rhyhorn on the way, but didn't really find it.
Well, let's see what kind of Rock-type Pokemon he will find here.
But first, let's get the gym battle quickly.
After taking his Pokemons to a Pokemon centre, he called his Grandpa.
"Hi Gary! How are you!"
"I am doing great. My Magikarp evolved into Gyarados!"
"Wow! Are you alright then? It must have been difficult to deal with him, right?"
"No. He is great. I treated him well as Magikarp, so things worked out well."
"Great! So, how many Pokemons have you caught by now?"
Though Gary has 5 Pokemons right now, he has caught only 3 himself. Magikarp, Joltik and Pichu. In which, catching Magikarp was nothing hard. He caught Pichu with food. And he used a rock to help Charmander in defeating Joltik.
He got Charmander as his starter and and Froakie from Professor Sycamore.
Wait... Is he a fraud?
Alright! He will catch a Pokemon the normal way!
"Gary?"
"Yeah. I have total 5. I am going to challenge Pewter City gym right now, so bye!"
Gary was embarrassed about the realisation and cut the call.
"Your Pokemon are at full health."
"Thanks Nurse Joy."
Thanking her and taking back his Pokeballs, he headed to Brock's gym.
And when he appeared there, Ash was leaving with injured Pikachu in his arms.
Well, anyway!
"I am here for a gym battle."
"Alright. Geodude, I choose you!"
"Geodude."
"Charmander, I choose you!"
"Char!"
Ideally, he should have used Froakie and Gyarados for this gym battle, since Water is effective against Rock. And Fire is not very effective against Rock.
But since Gyarados will be able to cleanly sweep this battle, it's good training for Charmander against types she is not very effective against.
"You have the first move."
"Alright! Charmander, use Dragon Claws!"
"Char!"
"Geodude! Dodge it!"
"Flamethrower on its lower end!"
"Char!"
Not only Geodude was already floating away, but the Flamethrower on its lower end sent him flying, upwards.
"Now use Dragon Tail to jump, and then Dragon Tail on it!"
Charmander jumped using Dragon Tail, and then used it to smash Geodude into the ground.
Geodude was knocked out.
"Geodude return!"
Brock complimented Gary.
"I have never seen a Charmander using Dragon Claw and Dragon Tail."
"Thanks."
"Now, Onix, go!"
Brock brought out Onix.
"Use Flamethrower!"
"Use tackle!"
Onix has impressive physical capabilities, including defence, especially in anime. But not great special defence.
That's why, Flamethrower, though only 1/2 effective, might deal more damage.
Still, Onix went through the Flamethrower.
"Charmander, dodge up and use Dragon Tail on his head!"
"Char!"
Charmander tried, but he couldn't dodge.
He got hit by tackle and thrown to the wall.
"Char!"
"Charmander!"
Charmander gave a weak thumbs up.
"Rest for a while now."
Gary returned Charmander.
And brought out Froakie instead of Gyarados.
Gyarados will still be an overkill against Onix, given that he still has Charmander.
"Hmm, an unknown—"
"Use Concentrated Water Gun!"
"Froakie!"
Gary didn't give Brock the chance to comment, and had Froakie attack.
The Concentrated Water Gun, though not perfected yet, has a lower cross-section than normal Water Gun, giving more pressure.
The Water Gun hit Onix, and it screamed.
"Now finish it with Water Pulse!"
"Froakie!"
Froakie jumped up, and smashed a Water Pulse on Onix.
Onix got knocked out.
Gary won.
"Well, that's certainly a way. Onix, return!"
"You have won the Boulder Badge, congratulations!"
"Thanks."
Gary looked at his first badge with emotion.
"If you don't mind, it's the first time I have seen a Pokemon like this."
"This is Froakie. I got him from Kalos."
"Froakie!"
Froakie happily shook Brock's hand.
"Alright, let's head to the Pokemon centre. Froakie, race with me!"
"Froakie!"
So, Gary and Froakie raced to the Pokemon centre, where Nurse Joy treated Charmander.
"You both were great today."
"Char!"
"Froakie!"
Gary's eyes met Ash's.
"Hey! So did you get your badge?"
"Of course. Let's have a battle."
"Who is afraid!?"
"I didn't say anything like that, idiot."
"Huh!? What did you call me—"
Ugghhhh. That's why he doesn't like to play with kids.
But he wouldn't pass the opportunity to humiliate his Pikachu with his Pichu.

In the Pokemon battlefield next to Pokemon Centre, Gary and Ash stood opposite to each other. Ready for battle. And Misty became the refree.
"Let's have a 2v2 battle, with the Pokemons you used to fight Brock. It will be a great training for you, right?"
"Alright!"
"Then battle begin!"
"Alright! Pikachu, I choose you!"
"Still sending your Pokemon first huh?"
"It doesn't matter in which order I bring my friends! I will defeat you!"
...Where is this overconfidence coming from?
Still, Gary chose his Pokemon.
"Pichu, I choose you."
"Huh? What Pokemon is this—"
"Pichu! Use Thundershock!"
Just as Ash was taking out his Pokedex, Gary ordered Pichu his first attack.
"Pi—CHU!"
Pikachu got struck by Thundershock, but didn't really take much damage, as expected.
"Hey! That's cheating—!"
"Use Electroball!"
"Piiiiiii—"
"Pikachu! Use Thundershock!"
"Pika—"
"—CHU!"
"—CHU!"
Pichu's Electroball got cancelled by Pikachu's Thundershock with a Boom!
Now, Pichu was tired.
"Pikachu! Use Thundershock again!"
"Put your tail into the ground!"
"Pikaaaaa—CHUUU!"
Pikachu's Thundershock hit Pichu, but surprisingly, it didn't do much damage.
It did a bit, yes.
But most of the electricity flowed into the ground.
Gary thought in wonder. So his Pichu does not have Lightning Rod huh? Or maybe it will need some training to be developed?
Ash was confused.
"Huh? What happened? Pikachu, Thundershock again!"
"Use Electroball again!"
Both attacks hit each other, but this time, Pichu was overwhelmed.
Pichu got hit by the Thundershock, and he got knocked out.
"Good job Pichu. Now, Charmander, I choose you!"
"Char!"
Now, the real battle begins.
