The petals had begun to curl inward, their color fading, while he held the glass with care, as though gentleness alone might keep the flower alive.

"Dorian," I repeated, finding this turn of events quite ironic.

"Yes."

When I'd last seen them, none of them was in any condition to keep fighting. I'd wiped their memories rather than deal with a group of strangers asking questions I had no interest in answering, then left them to whatever came next. What happened after that stopped being my concern the moment I walked away.

"I'm sorry, but you'll have to ask someone else."

He sighed, and I could tell he'd been counting on me to do this favor. Unfortunately, their lives weren't my problem.

"It's all right." He stood and adjusted his coat. "I'll send another team. I'll ask the Platinum Maiden for help instead."
