Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: I’m Going to the Frontlines, I’m Going to Trample the Ninja Clans

"You're awake!" The one-armed chunin nearby noticed Kairen standing up.

Kairen nodded, accepting his fellow patient's greeting.

"You slept through the whole morning, huh! So, how'd you get injured?"

Kairen folded his blanket neatly on the bed and said casually,

"I was hunted down by Sunagakure's ANBU!"

The one-armed chunin clearly didn't believe him. He shook his severed arm stump.

"See this? A man's badge of courage. This was caused by the Fourth Kazekage's secret Magnet Release technique!"

"Oh! So you're a strong one too, I've long heard of you!"

"Don't flatter me!"

"Dare I ask your esteemed name?"

"I am Yamashita Shige, a Water-type shinobi of Konoha."

"How watery are you?"

"As watery as you'd like me to be?"

"Oh!"

"I still haven't heard your title. Would you tell me?"

"I am the undying shinobi of Konoha, the Rose of the Battlefield, the man who can dance with the heavens—Moku Kairen!"

"Hissss~ terrifying!!"

While boasting with Shige, Kairen secretly opened his system interface.

He looked at his chunin template and saw a few changes compared to before.

[Evaluation]: ‎O(∩_∩)O

A new Kekkei Genkai section had appeared. His chakra control and chakra nature transformation had improved thanks to learning the Dragon Flame Release Song Technique.

He checked his experience points and saw that he'd spent them all two days ago. Only 4 points remained from yesterday's suicide.

Kairen sat on the bed, planning carefully. What he needed most was war, and jōnin to kill him so he could gain experience.

But ever since being captured last time, he had grown cautious.

The secret of his undying bloodline had to be hidden. Though it would eventually be exposed, he needed to grow quickly while it was still concealed.

He needed to develop genjutsu to cover up his resurrections after death. And the Byakugan—he couldn't keep fighting with a cloth covering his eyes forever. He needed genjutsu to disguise that as well.

With no experience points at the moment, he could still try different suicide methods. But the efficiency was too low—only a few points gained, and repeating the same method reduced the returns.

He had to reach the most dangerous frontlines as soon as possible. But how could they possibly send a lowly genin to the deadliest battlefield?

There was only one way—offend the children of the ninja clans.

So Kairen waited and waited. But instead of a clan kid, the one who came was the adorable Yūhi Kurenai.

Kurenai came to visit Kairen, holding a few fruits in her hands.

"Kairen, are your wounds healing well?"

After all, they had once been classmates. He had always been that clingy nuisance stuck to her like a plaster. Not seeing him for a while, Kurenai found she actually missed him a little.

"Kurenai!"

Kairen nodded, chomping down on the apple she gave him, staring straight at the cute girl.

Her soft black hair and those crimson eyes—so charming one couldn't help but want to touch her very soul.

No wonder his former self had been so desperate to chase her. Even now, Kairen's heart stirred.

Kurenai shook her head speechlessly. Every time Kairen looked at her, it was always so strange.

Shizune walked over carrying medicine, saw Kurenai, greeted her, then busied herself with changing Kairen's bandages.

"Kairen, how are you recovering so fast? Even the scars are gone!"

Kairen casually made up a lie.

"Maybe I'm descended from the Senju. High recovery power is normal for me!"

"Liar!"

Seeing his injuries gone, Kurenai smiled.

"You healed pretty quickly! Back then, you scared me half to death!"

Back then Kairen's upper body had been bare, covered in blood, with several shuriken stuck in his back. He had terrified her.

"I still haven't thanked your father. I owe him a lot!"

"No need for thanks, we're all part of the same village."

Kurenai sighed softly.

"So many of our graduating class have scattered… Obito and Rin are on the Rain battlefield. Gai, Ebisu, and Shiranui Genma are at the Mist battlefield. On the River Country battlefield it's just you, me, Shizune, and Asuma."

Kairen stayed silent. But Shige beside him let out a cold snort.

"Sending civilian kids to the battlefield while the clan brats stay in logistics—what a fine policy the village has!"

Kurenai tilted her head, puzzled at the one-armed chunin's complaint.

Kairen thought carefully. In their class, only Obito and Asuma were clan children.

And this graduating batch? All the ones dying were civilians!

In other classes too, clan kids stayed in the rear doing logistics. Even if they were sent to battle, they never went to the frontlines.

The clans… the only things they couldn't avoid were death and taxes.

His former self had thought he was being singled out because of his father. But in truth, he had overthought it—the village elders hadn't paid him any special attention at all.

Shiges wanted to complain more, but noticing people walking past, he quickly shut his mouth.

"Kurenai, aren't you ready yet? We still need to patrol!" A tall boy called impatiently.

"Oh! Got it, Asuma," Kurenai replied.

Asuma walked over with his hands stuffed in his pockets, his posture lazy. Approaching Kairen's bed, he suddenly sneered.

"Heard you were captured by Sunagakure shinobi. To make it back alive—you're pretty lucky."

Asuma hated Kairen, who clung to Kurenai like a shadow. Back in the academy, he would beat him up every time they met, but Kairen still shamelessly stuck around Kurenai.

Kurenai grew upset. "Asuma, we're all classmates. Why do you have to say that?"

Asuma scoffed. A civilian genin—who knew if he'd even survive? So what if his words were harsh?

Clan children. And this was no ordinary one—it was the Hokage's son. If Kairen offended him, wouldn't he be sent straight to the bloodiest battlefield?

Kairen's death-seeking spirit blazed!

He cleared his throat, the essence of Sasuke's snark flowing through him.

"Yo! Isn't this the Hokage's son? What's the matter? Here to pad your record? After all, if you just stay in the village under your daddy the Hokage, it doesn't look too good."

Asuma stared at him in disbelief. It was the first time anyone had spoken to him like this.

"What did you just say?!"
