Chapter 83 - Chapter 81 : Learning a Combat Technique on the Spot

Things were going smoothly.

He placed the scroll into his storage ring, glanced at the sulking girl in the corner, and smirked.

After a moment, he decided to take the skeleton with him, planning to give it a proper burial later.

Turning, he tossed the three black keys in his hand and focused on the three stone boxes ahead.

Opening the chests was nothing complicated....just trying the three keys one by one.

Xiao Jian's luck seemed to falter at this moment; it took six attempts before all three boxes finally opened.

Inside each chest lay a single scroll:

Rainbow Poison Scripture, Purple Cloud Wings, Roaring Lion Chant.

Xiao Jian examined the scrolls thoughtfully. Nearby, Xiao Yixian heard the locks click open and was curious, but she refused to show anything beyond annoyance in front of him.

She quietly sidled closer, sneaking glances at the scrolls in Xiao Jian's hands.

Rainbow Poison Scripture: a guide to concocting deadly poisons.

Eagle Wings: an advanced flying combat technique of the Mystic tier.

Roaring Lion Chant: a wind-element Mystic-tier combat technique.

After a moment's contemplation, Xiao Jian flipped the scrolls into his Soul Ring and turned toward Xiao Yixian.

"Let's go. Mu Li might be suspicious now, we shouldn't linger."

He extended a hand toward her.

"Slap!"

Xiao Yixian jerked her hand away, standing angrily. "Who asked you to hold me? Shameless!"

Xiao Jian furrowed his brows. Did this girl not understand their situation?

Shaking his head slightly, he bent down. In a swift motion, he wrapped his arms around her legs and hoisted her onto his shoulders.

"What are you doing! Put me down!"

Xiao Yixian, embarrassed and flustered, pounded his back with her fists, but no matter how hard she hit, Xiao Jian remained unfazed. In fact, her own hands started hurting from the impact.

With a sigh, Xiao Jian smacked her rear lightly.

"Ah! You—"

Xiao Yixian froze, cheeks burning, glaring at him.

"If you don't behave, I'll drop you off this cliff. Mu Li isn't an idiot—he's probably gathering his men to block us. We need to move quickly."

Xiao Yixian fell silent, her struggles weakening. After a moment, she mumbled, "I won't move anymore. Can you put me down? Your shoulders are digging into my stomach."

Xiao Jian stopped and gently set her down. She immediately clutched her midsection, rubbing it.

"Let's go."

He took her hand, hurrying toward the cave exit.

"Hey, slow down!"

Xiao Yixian almost tripped, but fearing being lifted again, she quickened her pace, keeping up with him.

Soon, they reached the cave entrance, the bright moon hanging high in the night sky.

Before Xiao Yixian could ask how to scale the cliff, Xiao Jian positioned himself protectively in front of her.

She blinked, confused, but then a figure suddenly appeared above the cave entrance—feet first, then legs, torso, chest, and finally face.

A glint flashed, and the figure fell with a "ho-ho" sound down the cliff.

Xiao Yixian's eyes widened as she looked at Xiao Jian, who stood holding his spear, eyes cold and alert.

The cave was too narrow for him to fight freely with his spear.

"Let's go back inside."

Thinking quickly, Xiao Jian tucked Xiao Yixian into his arms and returned to the stone chamber. Using his Soul Perception, he located the door's mechanism, activated it, and the faint yellow earthy glow reappeared.

"Why are we back? Shouldn't we charge out?" Xiao Yixian asked, struggling to leave his arms.

"Mu Li's people have arrived. There are many, and they are strong. I could charge alone, but with you, I need to make sure you're safe. This door's mechanism can withstand a Mystic-tier attack. Even with numbers, they can't break it quickly. That gives us some time."

Xiao Jian shook his head seriously.

"What can we do now?" Xiao Yixian frowned.

"Train in a combat technique."

He flipped open the scroll for Purple Cloud Wings, newly acquired.

"Train a combat technique? In so little time? What can you even learn?" Xiao Yixian scowled, thinking this shameless thief had lost his mind.

"Mu Li's men are outside. Even throwing stones could kill them below. I'm fast enough to handle them, but with you, I need absolute control. No risks." Xiao Jian's expression hardened.

Sitting down, he opened the scroll.

Two jet-black wings appeared, faintly laced with purple cloud patterns, shimmering with a metallic texture. Small wisps of heat emanated from the feathers.

A line of black script read:
