Chapter 58 - The Wastelands

Chapter 58

We spent the last few days gathering all the food and supplies we would need for our journey. We gather various items, including medical supplies, water, tools, and clothing. Loading everything up, everyone was waiting with anticipation.

The veil was coming down, and parts of the space above us, which had turned white, fell gently onto the floor like shattered glass as more cracks appeared on the dome. As we pushed off, taking the main exit, the wagon wiggled through the bumps in the road.

A few minutes passed, and the silence filled the air. In the midst of the silence, I thought to myself. 'We are almost out of here... we are all going to part ways soon.'

I looked around, seeing each one of their faces. 'Now that I think of it, what do they plan to do. I was going to go with Amiel to fulfill my will, but what of the other two?'

Ael's face was stiff, while Eira stared off into space.

"Ael, after all this, what do you plan to do?" I asked as he pushed the wagon.

He turned towards me and took a moment, "I don't know, I was planning on going back to my family's estate and see what else to do there. The capital is just a pit stop."

'Seems like a reasonable plan.'

"But that is, of course, if my family land still exists."

"You shouldn't say that," Eira turned to Ael with a shocked expression.

Ael chuckled lightly, "Of course, I don't want that to happen, so I will think positively."

My eyes fell back on Eira, "What about you, Eira?"

"Huh? Me?" She asked, pointing at herself.

"I was planning on seeing if I could find any clues as to who I was before, well, all this."

I stayed quiet, 'Seems lonely.'

"If you want, why not join Eirian and me at my family's? My family governs the northern part of this country, plus we could get you all the intel you need."

She lingered for a while, "You would be fine with that?"

"Well, not for free, of course, you would just have to join to be a part of my family. Become a part of our military."

"That's all?" She asked.

He gave a smile. "Yup."

"Then count me in. Gives me a place to start now."

'Well, that was simple. I don't think she knows what she just agreed to.'

"Happy to have you," I smiled at her.

The wagon shook a bit as I continued to look at all of them. 'I always believed that this world was unfair, that no one should have to die. Countless men have been slaughtered, homes burned to ashes, and people starved. For the longest time, I have tried running from it, but that didn't work. Lightbringer might have been a name bestowed upon me by the God of Numen, but to me it stands for something more now. It stands for what I wish to be for others.' Looking up to the sky, I took a deep breath as the wagon came to a stop. "I'm going to end the war."

"Finally here." Ael let out as we stood at the edge of campus.

"How much longer do you think it will come down?" Eira asked.

I looked up, "I don't know, do we just wait here?"

Suddenly, the cracks that had been forming in the white dome above us started to fall; the veil was finally coming down.

"Guess not," Ael said, staring off to the sky. "Seems like it's finally collapsing."

Putting out my hand, I could see each shard fall gently as the sky unveiled itself. I could hear the cracks echo through the campus as each new one was formed. As more and more fell from the sky, we could see the sun peering through the dome until there was nothing more.

I could hear Ael chuckling as the others stared at the sight of it all. The whole ordeal felt unlike anything I'd ever experienced. It was all over; I was done with the endless loops and cycles of this campus.

Taking a step forward, we began walking. Outside the campus seemed colder. The ground was wet, no plants grew, but the soil was wet. Scoping the distance, it was a flat plane of nothing.

Behind me, footsteps could be heard on the dirt. Ael walked forward alongside Amiel.

"Time to go forward."

I smiled, "Yeah."
