As Brant descended, dozens of eyes snapped toward him.
Wind stirred the dust around his boots as he landed, the tense atmosphere pricking against the skin. It was obvious he had come to address the bizarre situation everyone had silently dreaded to hear.
His gaze swept across the sparsely scattered instructors.
Some stood stiff, their faces pale as chalk.
Some trembled with red-rimmed eyes.
Others whispered frantically among themselves, panic leaking into their voices as they stared at the seventy percent death rate.
He took a slow breath before speaking.
"At first, we assumed the death rates were high because the candidates with talents other than Beast Taming simply couldn't survive against the beasts," Brant said, his voice steady yet heavy.
"But we were wrong. It was all because of the Demons."
The moment the word left his mouth, the atmosphere froze—as though the wind itself had abruptly stopped moving.
